In their BMW M4 GT3 EVO, the team executed a well-timed pit stop strategy to climb from seventh on the grid to take top honours in the Gold Cup. The race, interrupted several times by yellow flags, tested the drivers' consistency and composure across three hours of endurance racing.
Al Zubair, who took the opening stint, navigated a competitive field and maintained pressure during the early phases of the race. 'I'm happy to clinch the win in the Gold Cup Category,' said Al Zubair. 'Honestly, this is a dream come true. Especially because we started the race from seventh on the grid. But the strategy from Team WRT was excellent.'
He added, 'We had the speed throughout the weekend, but in qualifying we faced some issues, particularly in Q3. Fourth position in the overall classification and winning the Gold Cup category, this was fantastic. I'm very proud to raise the Omani flag high. We are aiming to achieve even more.'
The GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup will resume with the prestigious Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa from June 25 to 29.

Oman's vehicle registrations rise 5.5% to nearly 1.8mn
Muscat – The total number of registered vehicles in Oman reached 1,798,062 till the end of June this year, marking a 5.5% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). Private vehicles made up the majority of registered vehicles, accounting for 79.3% with 1,425,308 units. Commercial vehicles followed at 14.7% (264,913), while rental vehicles represented 2.3% (41,386). The remainder included taxis, government vehicles, and other categories. White vehicles remained the most common on Omani roads, representing 42.3% of the total, or 761,358 vehicles. Silver was the second most popular colour at 12.9% (231,822), followed by grey with 181,140 registered vehicles. In terms of engine capacity, vehicles with engines between 1,500cc and 3,000cc comprised the largest share at 54.5% (979,300), while those with capacities between 3,001cc and 4,500cc made up 22.2% (399,770). Vehicles weighing under 3 tonnes formed the largest weight category, representing 90.7% of total registrations, or 1,631,392 vehicles.

Summer Football Programme concludes in Muscat
MUSCAT: The Football Training Centre concluded its activities as part of the Summer Sports Days Programme in Muscat Governorate, organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY), with a five-a-side football tournament featuring the participation of 50 players. The tournament was marked by a high level of challenge and competitiveness, with players showing notable improvement in performance and skills thanks to the intensive training programme that spanned a month and a half since its launch on June 29. The sessions were held at the main hall of Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher. The centre catered to two age groups: the first from 7 to 11 years old, and the second from 12 to 16 years old, with each group attracting over 100 participants. This turnout reflects the programme's significant success in engaging young talents and honing their football abilities. The training sessions incorporated a variety of technical and physical exercises, in addition to tactical drills simulating real match scenarios. Mohammed al Subhi, Supervisor of the Summer Sports Days Training Centres at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher, confirmed that the Five-a-Side Football Centre has witnessed strong participation since its inception. He noted that the participants demonstrated commitment and discipline throughout the training period, with great support and encouragement from parents who were keen to follow their children's progress. Al Subhi pointed out that the centre's conclusion coincided with the wrap-up of other training centres last week, the most notable being the Women's Training Centre, which, for the first time, saw a record participation of 230 girls, reflecting the growing interest in women's sports. The Gymnastics Centre also concluded, attracting participants of various ages, along with the Tennis and Table Tennis Centres, which had a more recreational focus aimed at fostering a love for sports without competitive pressure. He also explained that the management introduced a new Tennis Centre this year in cooperation with the Oman Tennis Association, where a mini indoor tennis court was set up to overcome the summer heat. The centre received a remarkable turnout, and the association was able to identify several promising talents, with plans to monitor and develop them in the future. Al Subhi highlighted that the training centres focused on utilising young Omani talents in coaching and administration, in cooperation with the College of Education at Sultan Qaboos University (Physical Education Department) as well as physical education teachers, which enriched the training experience and enhanced the professional development of the supervisors. He concluded by pointing to upcoming events in Muscat's Summer Programme, including the 'Sports Caravan', which will take place in Qurayat in mid-August. This travelling event aims to promote physical activity in local communities. Additionally, the major annual event 'Ghaya'tuh Namshi' (Its Goal is to Walk) will return at one of the major shopping malls in a more comprehensive format this year, featuring interactive sports stations and family competitions.

Football coach Queiroz sets World Cup qualification as top priority
Muscat – Newly appointed head coach of Oman's national football team, Carlos Queiroz, has set a clear objective – securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking during his introductory press conference in Muscat on Tuesday, the Portuguese coach outlined his strategy and called for national unity in pursuit of what he described as a historic opportunity. 'We cannot lie to ourselves. If we lie to and deceive ourselves, we will not be able to achieve success,' Queiroz said. 'Honesty is very important, and here we are for smart work to achieve success on the field.' Officially appointed in July, Queiroz has previously helped six different countries qualify for the World Cup. He stressed that achieving such a milestone with Oman would require collective commitment from all stakeholders. 'Everyone should understand that this is an important mission and the efforts of everyone – players, clubs, managers and officials – must be combined,' he said. 'This is an opportunity that has never existed in the history of Oman. We must seize it to achieve the dream.' The 71-year-old coach has already begun work by assessing the team and individual players. The national side is scheduled to hold a training camp in Türkiye ahead of its participation in the Central Asian Championship in Uzbekistan. 'Oman has over 5mn people, but we need to have one beating heart,' Queiroz said. 'This dream is our mission, and we must bring this pride to Oman through discipline and correct behaviour.' The former Real Madrid manager noted that a more detailed plan will be unveiled in October outlining the roadmap to World Cup qualification. 'The priority now is to mobilise the energy and resources for World Cup qualification,' he said. 'After October, we will present the plan on how to advance with Omani football.' The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, offers expanded qualification slots, making it a potentially more accessible tournament for emerging football nations like Oman.
