Giant's haul sinks Suns in finals-shaping victory
Harry Rowston had just one goal in 15 games before Saturday, when he booted four for the Giants in a 17.9 (111) to 11.10 (76) win at People First Stadium.
Victory would have likely meant an end to the Suns' 15-year wait for a finals campaign.
And they looked likely after stalling the Giants' fast start in the second term.
But with the Giants chasing their own finals-clinching victory, it was the visitors who tore clear behind supreme pressure and devastatingly accurate set-shot kicking.
Rowston's haul, Max Gruzewski's three majors and three other multiple goal-kickers ensured the Giants weren't exposed by the absence of injured spearheads Jesse Hogan and Jake Stringer.
The win was the Giants' sixth straight against their expansion rivals and 15th from their past 16 encounters.
It almost certainly locks in their finals berth - the Giants' third straight under Adam Kingsley - and keeps their top-four hopes alive.
The Suns' September plans remain in pencil. They likely still need at least one win from their final-round double-header - against Port Adelaide and Essendon - to play in their first post-season since their 2011 admission.

The Suns had tidied up defensively, matched the Giants' pressure and clawed their way back from a 20-point deficit to trail by just four when Ben Ainsworth chipped through his set shot.
But it all swung after a remonstrating Ben Long gave away a 50m penalty in the goal square for remonstrating over a free kick.
The ball popped out the back at the other end and Darcy Jones ran into an open goal.
Aaron Cadman won a free kick minutes later and the Giants had their third in the final four minutes of the half when 21-year-old Rowston marked and goaled after the siren.
The margin, suddenly out to 22, stretched further with Rowston's fourth to begin the third term.
Ben King's first kick of the game - midway through the third term - was pure and briefly breathed some life into the Suns.
But again the Giants ran away from the bounce and replied through Gruzewski.
Goals to Jake Ricciardi and Toby Bedford, awarded a free kick when officials felt Alex Davies was taking on a tackle, all but sealed the result with time left in the third term.
Finn Callaghan led the Giants' midfield, while Suns star Matt Rowell was well held.
The lead swelled to 45 points and shaped as a potentially damaging percentage blow to the Suns, before they kicked three late goals.

Former Notre Dame WR on the verge of starting as a rookie for the New York Giants
While former Notre Dame wide receiver Beaux Collins didn't hear his name getting called during the NFL draft, he's still getting an opportunity to make the New York Giants roster. It's starting to look like he won't just make the team, that he could be a starter. The Big Blue Film Room social media account recently pointed out that not only is Collins getting solid run, he's getting first-team reps. They quoted Jordan Raanan, ESPN's Giants beat reporter, as he said 'you are getting first-team reps, that means something, at this point in the summer.' Part of this development with the Giants is that Malik Nabers has been out with an injury, but Collins is still taking full advantage of the opportunity. It remains to be seen what happens when his teammate returns, but you have to believe the organization is very happy with his emergence during fall camp. It's quite the journey that Collins has taken to get to this point in his career, after playing his first three years at Clemson, before finishing his collegiate eligibility with the Irish. It was a solid last year with Notre Dame, as Collins caught 41 passes for 490 yards and three scores. He'll get another chance later tonight to try and secure a spot with the Giants, as they host the New York Jets in their second preseason game of the year. Jets vs. Giants prediction: NFL preseason Week 2 picks, best bets for the Snoopy Bowl
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. Why not bet on the Snoopy Bowl? It's the 2025 NFL preseason, and this is perhaps the biggest one we'll have on the calendar. The Giants are strong favorites to win for a preseason game, coming in at -195 odds on BetMGM with the spread sitting at 3.5 points. The Jets initially opened as -1.5 point favorites, but the line moved four points in the Giants' direction. There aren't too many options in the prop markets, though Justin Fields could get some reps, and there are some markets related to the quarterback on FanDuel. Fields is +500 on FanDuel to throw a touchdown pass, while Garrett Wilson is 14/1 to score his team's first touchdown. Wilson is highly unlikely to play more than one drive in this game. The same goes for Breece Hall, who is +850 to score the game's first touchdown. We could see plenty of the Jets starters in the Snoopy Bowl. Getty Images Jets vs. Giants prediction The Giants have lost this matchup four straight times, losing 13-10 last season. In their first preseason game, Jaxson Dart put on a show as the Giants scored 34 points in a win over the Bills. It certainly seems like the Giants have had a strong preseason and have far superior quarterback depth, with Dart expected to play plenty, along with Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito. If you're looking for action, the Giants are the play. Betting on the NFL? By most accounts, the Giants' defensive front ate the Jets up in joint practices earlier this month. If the Giants' defensive line is that dominant, the Jets are sure to be in trouble. PICK: Giants -3.5 (-110, BetMGM) Why Trust New York Post Betting Erich Richter is a brazilian jiu-jitsu blue belt but he has a black belt in MMA betting. During the football season he's showcased massive profits at The Post in the player prop market the last two seasons. While constantly betting long shots, his return on investment is 30.15 percent since 2022.
