Emma Raducanu claims straight-sets victory in first match with new coach

Independent3 days ago
Emma Raducanu is through to the third round of the Cincinnati Open after a straight-sets win over Olga Danilovic.
The British No 1 marked her first match since Rafael Nadal's former coach Francis Roig joined her team with a confident 6-3 6-2 victory.
Roig may not have been overly impressed when Raducanu was broken to love in the first game, but the 2021 US Open champion responded well.
After four breaks of serve between the pair in the opening six games, Raducanu came from 30-0 down to grab another for 5-3.
She had won seven points in a row to bring up three set points and took the first with an ace.
In the second, Raducanu gave her Serbian opponent nothing for free, drawing out errors and eventually earning a break for 3-2.
She did not drop another game, wrapping up a fine victory in an hour and 20 minutes.
The 22-year-old will face world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the third round, after the Belarusian repelled an early challenge from Marketa Vondrousova en route to a 7-5 6-1 win.
Earlier, Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek eased through with a 6-1 6-4 victory over Anastasia Potapova.
Australian Open champion Madison Keys saved two match points before beating Eva Lys 1-6 6-3 7-6 (1).
In the ATP draw, Jannik Sinner, playing his first match since claiming a maiden Wimbledon title, dismantled Daniel Elahi Galan 6-1 6-1.

Tennis star struggles to keep cool after complaining about crying baby in stadium

British tennis player Emma Raducanu was knocked out of the Cincinnati Open after a narrow defeat to Belarusian player Aryna Sabalenka. During the final set of the match, Raducanu's concentration was broken by a crying infant in the stands, leading her to vocalise her annoyance to the chair umpire. The umpire responded by asking if Raducanu wanted the child removed, prompting cheers from the crowd. The long and tireless match lasted over three hours, with Sabalenka ultimately clinching the win 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(5). Raducanu is next scheduled to play in the 2025 U.S. Open, participating in the main draw of the women's singles.

'Inside the NBA' fans receive early blow as schedule reveals huge change to show ahead of ESPN switch

If the preliminary schedule for ESPN's NBA coverage is to be believed, fans of 'Inside the NBA' may be headed for disappointment for the program's new home. Last year, ESPN agreed to a sublicensing deal with Turner Sports for the rights to air the popular NBA halftime and post-game show starring Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, Kenny 'The Jet' Smith, and Charles Barkley. The deal was reached after Turner's network - TNT - lost the rights to air NBA games for the 2025-26 season and onward. But even though the show is set to still hit the airwaves, the possibility for ESPN altering the program remained. According to Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch, ESPN's advance calendar lists the debut of the award-winning show set for ESPN's first NBA doubleheader of the season on October 22. However, it appears the network has only a half-hour block for the show. 'The show would run from 12:05-12:35am ET, leading to a Bristol-based SportsCenter at 12:35,' Lewis reported. A report from Sports Media Watch indicates ESPN will restrict the show to half-an-hour after the network broadcasts its first doubleheader of the season on October 22 Daily Mail Sport has reached out to ESPN for comment on this report. The programming decision has notably not been announced by the 'Worldwide Leader in Sports' and is likely subject to change. But Lewis reports that after that half-hour show leading out of the doubleheader, the schedule doesn't list 'Inside' to appear until Christmas Day. A report from last November noted that the show would air 'during key moments on the league's calendar: opening night, Christmas Day, the playoffs and the NBA Finals.' That report also added that it was 'also likely it will be on during Saturday nights in the second half of the season, when ABC has a prime-time package of games.' Fans and those appearing on the show have shared concerns for the rigidity of the company's programming windows as they transition to the new network. Last month, Barkley even joked about those concerns, saying, 'Are they gonna say we gotta go to the SportsCenter?' 'Inside' has been no the air since 1989 - debuting on TNT and going through multiple different analysts before arriving at the main roster of four stars.

Alcaraz eases into Cincinnati Open fourth round with victory against Medjedovic

The men's second seed Carlos Alcaraz continued to rebuild his on-court momentum and rhythm after a brief summer break by defeating the talented young Serbian Hamad Medjedovic 6-4, 6-4 to reach the fourth round of the Cincinnati Open. The victory was a positive step for Alcaraz after a rusty performance in his opener against Damir Dzumhur on Sunday, where he won a turbulent three-set contest in his first match since losing the Wimbledon final against Jannik Sinner. Instead of immediately focusing on the North American hard court swing, with the Canadian Open in Toronto starting two weeks after Wimbledon, Alcaraz took some time off. He took a week off from practice and holidayed in El Puerto de Santa Maria, in southern Spain, before two weeks training at home in El Palmar, Murcia. 'When I'm off, I'm off,' he said. 'I don't step in the gym at all. A lot of times if we go for a trip, sometimes my friends go to the gym. The first week that I had off I just told them: 'I'm gonna join you for a little run.' But then I woke up and I said: 'Go, and I'm going to keep sleeping.'' Medjedovic presented a genuine challenge for Alcaraz. A winner at the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2023, two years after Alcaraz's victory there, the 22-year-old is armed with a big serve and an enormous forehand. However, his footwork, conditioning and intensity are all lacking at the highest level. With the exception of a brief blip in the second set, where he momentarily lost his serve, Alcaraz played a solid match and he continually exposed Medjedovic's movement as he marched into the fourth round. Alcaraz will next face Luca Nardi, a lucky loser, after the 16th seed Jakub Mensik became the latest player to suffer in the heat, retiring from his third-round match against Nardi when trailing 6-2, 2-1. In the women's draw Coco Gauff advanced to the fourth round after a walkover against Dayana Yastremska, the 32nd seed, who withdrew on Tuesday due to illness.
