Indian PM Modi assures strong response to every terrorist attack
Kanpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday issued stern warning to Pakistan for "sponsoring" terrorism and said that India will respond strongly to every terrorist attack.
He stated that India will not differentiate between state and non-state actors, and those responsible will be held accountable and punished, regardless of their location or affiliation.
"If I say this straight in Kanpuriya, dushman kahin bhi ho honk diya jayega," PM Modi said while addressing the gathering here.
Without mincing words, PM Modi emphasised that India will not be intimated of hollow nuclear threats.
"India will not be scared of hollow threats of atom bomb and won't take decisions on this basis (of such a threat). India will look at the 'aaka' of terrorism and its sponsoring government with only one view: Pakistan's state and non-state actors...this game will not work anymore," PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister laid down India's stand and its plan of action against terrorism, saying that any terrorist attack that happens, India will respond strongly to every terrorist attack, with the timing and terms of the response decided by the Armed Forces.
"In its fight against terrorism, India has decided on three rules: every terrorist attack will be answered strongly. The army will decide on how to answer and in what way to answer. The conditions to respond to a terrorist attack will also be decided by the army," PM Modi asserted.
He emphasised the importance of self-reliance in defence and economy, citing the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" campaign as a key initiative. He highlighted India's growing strength and its ability to respond decisively to terrorist threats.
PM Modi gave examples of Make in India and India's weapon systems through Operation Sindoor, where advanced weapons such as BrahMos entered deep into enemy territory and caused havoc.
"The world witnessed the power of Make in India and its weapon through Operation Sindoor. Our Indian weapons (systems), including the BrahMos missile, entered the enemy territory and caused havoc. The explosions happened on target. We have received this power from our resolve for Aatmnirbhar Bharat," PM Modi said.
Highlighting India's resolve to remain self-reliant, the Prime Minister recalled times when the country relied on other nations for its safety. He said that becoming Aatmanirbhar was crucial for the country's self-respect.
"There was a time when India depended on other countries for its safety. We have tried to change these circumstances. India becomes Aatmanirbhar, it is good for the economy, but it is also important for the country's self-respect," PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister mentioned Operation Sindoor, stating that it is not over yet and warning enemies not to be fooled. He recalled India's military action in Pakistan, where terror camps were destroyed, and the Pakistan Army begged for a ceasefire.
"We destroyed terrorist camps deep inside (Pakistan). Our army performed with such courage that the Pakistani army was forced to demand a halt to the conflict. I salute the courage and valour of the armed forces. During Operation Sindoor, the enemy that was begging shouldn't remain in any delusion. Operation Sindoor has not finished yet," PM Modi said.
He apprised about his meeting with the family members of slain victim Shubham Dwivedi, who was shot dead in the ghastly April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, before his wife. The PM said that the outrage felt by "our sisters and daughters" has translated into Operation Sindoor.
"This program was supposed to happen on April 24. However, I had to cancel my visit to Kanpur due to the Pahalgam attack. Our son from Kanpur, Shubham Dwivedi, was also a victim of the terrorist attack. We can feel the pain of our daughter Ashanya. The world witnessed the outrage felt by our sisters and daughters in the form of Operation Sindoor," PM Modi said.
PM Modi was speaking at an event in Kanpur where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 15 development projects costing Rs 47,600 crores. He also flagged off Kanpur Metro's new corridor between Chunniganj and Nayaganj.

"Global South must cooperate against terrorism," says former Ethiopian PM after meeting Indian delegation
Addis Ababa: The all-party delegation led by Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule, met with the former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn in Addis Ababa late on Friday. The delegation had arrived at Bole International Airport in Ethiopia on Friday, where they were received and welcomed by the Ambassador of India to Ethiopia, Anil Kumar Rai. The delegation also includes Rajiv Pratap Rudy (BJP), Vikramjit Singh Sahney (AAP), Manish Tewari (Congress), Anurag Singh Thakur (BJP), Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu (TDP), Anand Sharma (Congress), V Muraleedharan (BJP), and former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin. The delegation discussed bilateral cooperation, regional development, and the global fight against terrorism. After meeting the all-party delegation, the former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said, "Terrorism is a global problem and as a global community we need to cooperate and coordinate to fight against terrorism. The African Union has very good regulations as far as fighting terrorism is concerned, and especially when terrorism is state-sponsored, it is a very dangerous one. We need to find a way to fight terrorism... Global South, especially, has to cooperate and be strong in the fight against terrorism." Speaking after the meeting, Sule called the interaction "excellent," lauding Desalegn's five-decade-long engagement with Ethiopia's political and economic landscape. "They have seen a lot of conflict here. They have seen ups and downs in their economy and growth. But under his leadership, they had double-digit growth and many infrastructure projects--be it beautiful dams, railways, industrial parks," Sule noted, drawing parallels between India and Ethiopia's shared developmental aspirations. "We had a detailed discussion and told him what happened in Pahalgam. The attack on India's soul is just not accepted. And we all must commit ourselves to zero tolerance against any terrorism anywhere in the world. India will not accept any terrorist attacks anymore," Sule stressed, underlining the main theme of the delegation's engagements across the region. Sule also welcomed Ethiopia's inclusion in the G20 during India's presidency last year, calling it a significant milestone in India-Ethiopia ties. "It's very important for us to come here today to talk to them. We were very warmly received and reassured that in this journey of eradication of terrorism, Ethiopia still stands together solidly with India," she said. Commenting on Ethiopia's bilateral relations with Pakistan, Sule said that terrorism must be opposed globally, regardless of geopolitical alignments, "I think globally, everybody agrees that there has to be zero tolerance against terrorism. So I think we are very hopeful that when it comes to terrorism, we all stand united, whoever the other country may be, but we will not accept any terrorism anywhere in the world anymore." Meanwhile, echoing similar views, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, a member of the delegation, highlighted the need for decisive action against terror-sponsoring states. "We don't find the difference between terrorist organisations and the states sponsoring terrorism, we see the similarities in them. We will not be restraining ourselves, but for the security of the country, for the safety of the country, we will try to eliminate the threat of this terrorism wherever it is in whichever country that is sponsoring it," he said. The visit, part of India's broader diplomatic outreach following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam and the subsequent Operation Sindoor, aimed to deepen bilateral ties and convey India's firm stance against cross-border terrorism.

India grants Saudi PIF more flexibility in equity markets
New Delhi — India has agreed to exempt the Saudi sovereign wealth fund from key foreign portfolio investment (FPI) restrictions, according to two sources familiar with the development. The decision aims to facilitate greater capital flows into India by allowing Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) and its affiliated entities to invest more flexibly in Indian equities. Current Indian regulations cap total investment from sovereign-related entities at 10% in a single company—regardless of whether investments come from separate arms of the same fund. 'This restriction has previously limited the PIF's ability to channel capital into India's high-growth sectors,' said one of the sources, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. The exemption, which comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's high-profile visit to the Gulf nation in April, is seen as a strategic step to unlock Saudi capital. The two nations have been working to strengthen cooperation in critical sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and pharmaceuticals. During the visit, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to finalizing a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) and enhancing cross-border economic engagement. Saudi Arabia's PIF—one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds with assets estimated at $925 billion—currently holds $1.5 billion in India's Jio Platforms and $1.3 billion in Reliance Retail. Analysts believe the exemption will pave the way for broader and deeper investments across India's fast-growing sectors. India, the third-largest oil importer globally, has been actively courting long-term capital from Gulf states to fund its infrastructure push. Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia has been seeking strategic investment opportunities in emerging markets as part of its ambitious Vision 2030 diversification strategy. To this end, the two countries formed a high-level task force in 2024 to accelerate Riyadh's plan to invest $100 billion in India. Progress on key issues such as taxation has been lauded by both governments as a breakthrough. 'The progress made by this Task Force in areas such as taxation was also a major breakthrough for greater cooperation in the future,' a joint statement issued in April said. Recent media reports suggest India is also considering tax relief measures for the PIF to further incentivize investment in infrastructure and energy projects.

Any kind of terrorism, religious extremism is unacceptable in Africa: Ethiopian leader
Addis Ababa : Speaker of the House of Ethiopia, Tagesse Chafo, has highlighted "very long-standing relationship" between India and his country and stressed the importance of working together with New Delhi and international organisations to eradicate terrorism. Speaking to ANI, he said: "We have to work together with the people of India and all relevant authorities in the African Union and the UN to eradicate this evil act." "India and Ethiopia have a very long-standing relationship. Terrorism happens in some parts of Africa. Any kind of terrorism and religious extremism is unacceptable in Africa. We have to stand together. A global coalition is very important," he added. The Supriya Sule-led delegation is in Ethiopia. The delegation includes Rajiv Pratap Rudy (BJP), Vikramjit Singh Sahney (AAP), Manish Tewari (Congress), Anurag Singh Thakur (BJP), Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu (TDP), Anand Sharma (Congress), V Muraleedharan (BJP), and former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin. The delegation had arrived at Bole International Airport in Ethiopia on Friday, where they were received and welcomed by the Ambassador of India to Ethiopia, Anil Kumar Rai. Recently, the delegation concluded its diplomatic visit to South Africa with a series of meetings at India House in Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa, involving political leaders, think tanks, and the Indian diaspora. Seven all-party delegations are taking part in various outreach programmes in the countries they are assigned to. The delegations aim to brief international partners on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and its fight against cross-border terrorism. The seven delegations are visiting Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Algeria, the UK, France, Germany, the EU, Italy, Denmark, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Singapore, the UAE, Liberia, Congo, Sierra Leone, the US, Panama, Guyana, Brazil, Colombia, Spain, Greece, Slovenia, Latvia, Russia, Egypt, Qatar, Ethiopia, and South Africa.
