Dick Barnett, the gritty NBA guard who won two titles with the New York Knicks, has died at 88, the team announced Sunday following a controversial playoff win over the Detroit Pistons.
There were no details provided about his death.
'Throughout his illustrious career, Dick Barnett embodied everything it meant to be a New York Knick, both on and off the court,' the Knicks said in a statement.
'He left a positive impact on everyone he encountered and this organization is incredibly fortunate to have him be such an integral part of its history. His jersey will forever hang in the rafters of Madison Square Garden, and his play throughout his career will forever be a part of Knicks fans memories.'
Barnett played on the Knicks' title teams in 1970 and 1973 and reached the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and as a member of his college teams at Tennessee A&I (later Tennessee State), the first HBCU to win a national championship in basketball.
A native of Gary, Indiana, Barnett went on to star for the Tennessee A&I teams that made up one of college basketball's first dynasties.
The Tigers won three straight NAIA championships starting in 1957, with Barnett being chosen an All-American each season and twice being selected the MVP of the NAIA Tournament.
He was taken by the Syracuse Nationals with the No. 5 pick in the 1959 draft and also played for the Los Angeles Lakers before coming to the Knicks in 1965. He spent nine years with the Knicks, averaging 15.6 points and playing on their championship teams in 1970 and 1973.
Barnett is ninth on the Knicks' career scoring list and his No. 12 jersey was retired in 1990.
Barnett led a long quest for recognition for his college team. The Tigers were eventually enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 2019, represented on stage by Barnett, and in 2024 visited the White House to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris.
Barnett, who was selected for one NBA All-Star Game, was inducted in the Hall of Fame as a player in 2024.
Knicks fans, who were only just celebrating a playoff win, quickly began mourning on Sunday evening.
'We all tied to copy the Dick Barnett jumper,' one fan wrote online, referring to the Indiana native's signature shot.

June 8 - Although the Knicks have three players whom Jay Wright coached at Villanova, the retired Hall of Famer will not resume his career with New York, multiple media outlets reported on Saturday. Per the reports, Wright and Knicks president Leon Rose -- who are close -- had a discussion about the coaching vacancy but a formal interview was not scheduled. Following their first trip to the Eastern Conference finals in 25 years, the Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday after just one season at the helm. At Villanova, Wright coached current Knicks Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges, who were all members of the program's 2016 national championship team. After 21 seasons at Villanova, Wright retired in 2022 and became a college basketball analyst for CBS and TNT. He compiled a 520-197 record at the school. Commenting on social media regarding the reports that Wright would not be coaching the Knicks, Hart jokingly posted, "Man Thank You. Stay retired!" The New York Knicks are reportedly zeroing in on current Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd to fill its bench-boss vacancy after firing Tom Thibodeau earlier this week. Kidd has been the head coach for the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks before a stint as an assistant for the Los Angeles Lakers. Since 2021, Kidd has been the head-man in Dallas, with the team likely to try to retain him if the Knicks make an offer. The Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau and are looking for a new leader for Jalen Brunson and co. The Knicks' choice for their next head coach has to be one that brings a championship banner to Madison Square Garden, or it will be viewed as an unsuccessful tenure. Earlier this week, NBA insider Brian Windhorst has revealed Thibodeau was fired by the Knicks for making personnel changes too late into the season. 'What Tom Thibodeau did to his coaching strategy during the Eastern Conference finals might've assured his firing. What I mean by that is after falling down 2-0 in that series, he made a whole bunch of changes,' Windhorst said on 'Get Up'. 'He changed his starting lineup. Then he extended multiple players into his bench - something that players, team personnel, and people across the league had been begging him to do for months. He also changed some of his strategies within the coaching of the game, and it worked.' Yet, the changes may have been a little too late, in moves that were reactive and not proactive, to keep him with the franchise.
