Auston Matthews will miss Mitch Marner (Image via: Getty Images) Mitch Marner's blockbuster move to the Vegas Golden Knights has been one of the biggest NHL headlines of the summer. The former Toronto Maple Leafs star officially signed an eight-year, $96 million contract on July 1, ending his nine-season run in Toronto. While fans continue to process the departure, his longtime teammate Auston Matthews finally shared his thoughts, offering a heartfelt yet professional response. Auston Matthews breaks silence on Mitch Marner 's Golden Knights exit At the Hockey Night in Brampton charity event, Auston Matthews addressed Marner's exit for the first time. The Maple Leafs captain said, 'We'll obviously miss him, he's a great friend and great teammate. That's kind of the business side of it, that's tough, but wish him nothing but the best. We'll just keep it moving,' showing respect for his former linemate while preparing to lead Toronto into a new era. Marner, on the other hand, had no hesitation about his decision. He revealed that Vegas was very high on his list of preferred destinations and expressed gratitude for the opportunity. For the 28-year-old winger, the chance to join a Stanley Cup-winning franchise and settle into Nevada's thriving hockey atmosphere was simply too good to pass up. How Mitch Marner defined an era in Toronto During his nine-year tenure with the Maple Leafs, Mitch Marner cemented his place among the franchise greats. With 741 points in 657 games, he ranks fifth all-time in franchise scoring and consistently led Toronto in offensive production. Despite his impressive numbers and three NHL All-Star selections, Marner admitted it was 'very hard' to leave his hometown team without delivering a Stanley Cup. His emotional farewell post on Instagram reflected that regret, noting that representing Toronto was about community pride. Still, the allure of Vegas' winning culture and a fresh start proved decisive in shaping his future. Toronto Maple Leafs' path without Mitch Marner and Vegas Golden Knights' future with him While Vegas gains an elite playmaker in his prime, Toronto faces the challenge of filling a massive void. Nicolas Roy, acquired in the trade, adds depth, but the pressure falls on Matthews and the core to elevate their game. Paige Bueckers surpasses legendary WNBA player to claim her latest milestone
Paige Bueckers. Image via: Michael Chow/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images It didn't take long for Paige Bueckers to prove why she's the centerpiece of the Dallas Wings' rebuild. On Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Sparks, the rookie guard broke her tie with Hall of Famer Cynthia Cooper, recording her 29th consecutive game in double figures. The milestone places her third all-time in rookie scoring streaks and just five games shy of the league record held by Las Vegas Aces superstar A'ja Wilson. Paige Bueckers creates new WNBA record in Dallas Wings matchup against Los Angeles Sparks The Dallas Wings have endured a turbulent season, stumbling to a 9-26 record under first-year head coach Chris Koclanes. Wins have been scarce, but Bueckers has been the lone constant. She is averaging 18.8 points, 5.4 assists, and 4.1 rebounds a night, while also ranking among the league leaders in steals. Her efficiency has drawn comparisons to greats like Caitlin Clark and Diana Taurasi. Now, as she surpassed Cynthia Cooper with her latest milestone, Bueckers' is promising to be on the right track to her legacy in the league. "Paige Bueckers moves out of a tie with Cynthia Cooper for third-longest streak of consecutive double-digit scoring games by a rookie in @WNBA history with her 29th straight game of 10+ points. A'ja Wilson holds the record of 33 games, while Candace Parker is #2 with 32; Cooper moves to #4 with 28," Dallas Wings PR shared on X. Bueckers wasted no time making her presence felt against the Sparks at Arena. She scored six of Dallas' first nine points, including a difficult turnaround jumper over Kelsey Plum. By halftime, she had already tallied a team-high 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting. The Sparks eventually surged behind Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson. Coach Chris Koclanes has built the offense around her, and he believes she is already redefining what a rookie can be in the league. 'She is Rookie of the Year. There's no question,' Koclanes told Wings reporter Myah Taylor. 'She makes everyone around her better.' Paige Bueckers is forging her legacy in the WNBA For Bueckers, milestones have come quickly. She became the fastest rookie in league history to reach 500 points and 100 assists, broke her franchise's rookie assist record, and was voted an All-Star starter. Certainly, it was something many veterans never achieve. She now joins elite company, surpassing CynthiaCooper while closing in on A'ja Wilson's rookie scoring record. Further, Bueckers already sits sixth in the league in scoring and ninth in assists, and her defensive instincts put her among the top four in steals. Few rookies have entered the WNBA with this level of balance on both ends of the court. Also Read: Caitlin Clark injury update: Indiana Fever star guard reportedly hit with another setback Names like Diana Taurasi, Candace Parker, Napheesa Collier, and Caitlin Clark all won Rookie of the Year before carving out iconic careers. If Bueckers secures the honor, and all signs suggest she will, she'll be stepping onto that same path. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
