Inaugural meeting of Pakistan-Turkiye JSC held
The Turkish delegation was led by Director General for South Asia, Ambassador Cihad Erginay, and the Pakistani side was headed by the Additional Secretary (Afghanistan and West Asia), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Syed Ali Asad Gillani.
The JSC on Security, Defence and Intelligence was created after the 7th Session of High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) between Pakistan and Türkiye on 12-13 February 2025.

PM Shehbaz vows tougher stance against militancy, lauds counter-terror efforts
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed his government's resolve to eliminate terrorism and enforce the writ of the state, saying Pakistan had adopted a multifaceted strategy to tackle militancy and violent extremism. Chairing a high-level meeting of the steering committee on counterterrorism and state authority, referred to as the 'Harden the State' initiative, the premier said the world acknowledged Pakistan's gains in its fight against terrorism. 'Pakistan's brave forces have taken decisive action through operations like Zarb-e-Azb and Radd-ul-Fasaad. In the latest battles, the world has seen Pakistan's success,' the prime minister said, according to a statement issued by the PM Office. He credited the country's counterterrorism approach with combining ground operations, legislation, public engagement, and efforts to curb extremist ideologies. PM Shehbaz praised the coordination between federal and provincial governments and directed full implementation of the committee's recommendations to bolster security and intelligence cooperation. 'Our brave officers and soldiers who have laid down their lives for the motherland are a source of pride for the nation,' he said, adding that the war against terrorism had unified the armed forces, intelligence services, law enforcement, and the Pakistani people. The prime minister also appreciated the role played by the Counter Terrorism Departments, especially in Punjab, as well as the contributions of the Interior Ministry and the Intelligence Bureau. The prime minister said the government was actively working on a comprehensive and actionable strategy to eliminate threats posed by groups like 'Fitna-e-Hindustan' and 'Fitna-e-Khawarij' -references often used for Indian-backed proxies and violent extremist groups. He further noted that joint actions by relevant institutions had curbed smuggling, helping stabilize the economy. 'The impact of anti-smuggling efforts has been positive for the economy,' he added. Highlighting broader governance reforms, the premier said initiatives such as the digitisation of government systems and tax reforms were helping to restore investor confidence. He pointed to recent gains in the Pakistan Stock Exchange and improved global credit ratings as signs of economic recovery. On the issue of illegal Afghan migrants, PM Shehbaz said their repatriation was continuing in line with international law. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir, National Security Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Asim Malik, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Adviser Rana Sanaullah, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, chief secretaries, police chiefs of all provinces, and other senior officials.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), General Mirza called on Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Minister of Defence and Military Production General Abdel Mageed Ahmed Saqr, Admiral Osama Mounier Mohamed Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, and Professor Dr Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed El-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar. The statement noted that discussions focused on enhancing bilateral military cooperation, regional security, counter-terrorism efforts, and broader strategic collaboration. In his meeting with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, General Mirza emphasised the importance of religious and interfaith harmony in fostering tolerance and inclusivity, and in addressing the root causes of extremism and terrorism. The Egyptian leadership lauded the professionalism and operational capabilities of the Pakistan Armed Forces and acknowledged their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. Earlier, upon his arrival at the Ministry of Defence, the CJCSC was presented with a Guard of Honour by a contingent of the Egyptian Armed Forces.

Rupee strong run continues against US dollar
Rupee's Performance Against US Dollar Since 04 March 2025 The Pakistani rupee maintained its upward trajectory against the US dollar, appreciating 0.03% during trading in the inter-bank market on Thursday. At close, the currency settled at 282.87, a gain of Re0.08. On Wednesday, the currency settled at 282.95. Globally, the US dollar flirted with a two-month peak on Thursday after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell stuck to his patient approach on rates in a closely watched policy decision and offered little insight on when they could be lowered. The greenback was also on track for its first monthly gain for the year, bolstered by a hawkish Fed and US economic resilience, with uncertainty over tariffs beginning to ease given recent trade deals struck by Washington. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar was last steady at 99.77 , not far from a two-month peak of 99.987 it hit in the previous session. The dollar index was set for a monthly gain of more than 3%. US President Donald Trump's chaotic tariffs and fears of the dollar's demise earlier this year had undermined the currency and given it the worst start to the year since the floating exchange rate period. Those worries have since abated, giving the dollar new life. The latest push higher for the currency came on the back of the Fed's policy decision on Wednesday, after Powell reiterated it was still premature to ease rates. Oil prices, a key indicator of currency parity, gained for a fourth straight day on Thursday, as investors worried about supply shortages amid US President Donald Trump's push for a swift resolution to the war in Ukraine and threats of tariffs on countries buying Russian oil. Brent crude futures for September delivery, which are set to expire on Thursday, rose 27 cents, or 0.4%, to $73.51 a barrel by 0028 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude for September gained 37 cents, or 0.5%, to $70.37 a barrel. Both benchmarks settled 1% higher on Wednesday. The more active Brent October contract was up 29 cents, or 0.4%, at $72.76.
