#Reportback: We are ready to welcome the world for the Ballito Pro
As the ward councillor for Ward 6 in KwaDukuza, I am proud to reaffirm that Ballito is ready to welcome the world to the Ballito Pro 2025 – one of the most anticipated events on the international surfing calendar.
Running from June 22 to July 6, the Ballito Pro is a global spectacle, broadcast to millions around the world and showcasing not only world-class surfing talent, but also the vibrancy and hospitality of our town.
Crucial renovations to the Willard Beach lifeguard tower – a key component of our safety infrastructure – have begun and remain firmly on track for completion ahead of the competition's opening. This forms part of our broader readiness plan to ensure the safety, comfort and enjoyment of both participants and visitors.
In addition, local law enforcement, Saps and municipal departments are fully mobilised to ensure a safe and well-coordinated event. Their planning and presence are critical in delivering the secure environment expected of a world-class sporting occasion.
Local businesses, tourism operators and hospitality services are also gearing up to offer visitors a warm and memorable experience. From the beaches to the restaurants, the people of Ballito are ready.
Ballito is not just hosting a competition – we are opening our arms to the world.
Ballito is ready for you.

Durban schoolgirl's viral support for Comrades runners earns her heartfelt reward
A Durban schoolgirl's efforts in supporting Comrades runners on the 45th cutting near Sherwood have been rewarded, thanks to a businessman, Fred McKenzie, who made an unannounced visit to Northlands Primary School on Friday. Grade seven pupil Maddyson Shepard,12, became an instant hero when videos of her lending support to runners by cheering them on went viral on social media last Sunday. McKenzie said he had also seen the video of the teenager when he got home while browsing on social media. 'I realised her efforts were lovely and amazing and made arrangements to meet her after getting information from one of the Facebook users,' he said. McKenzie, through the help of the school's marketing department, managed to arrange a visit to the school on Friday morning. Maddyson, together with her classmates were showered with Wimpy vouchers. 'She is exactly the kind of person you see on the video. Free spirited, kind and slightly shy,' said McKenzie. Shepard said she was proud of her efforts. 'We had been on the road since the morning and we had seen the first male and female runners,' she said. She said during the day, she had rallied behind the runners. 'I told some of the runners, 'come on, I know how hard you have worked to get to this point.' Some were tired but others were determined to go on.' Shepard said when she arrived home, her mother told her someone had taken a video of her. McKenzie finished his Comrades in 11:34 minutes, bagging the Vic Clapham medal. 'This really meant a lot and will encourage me to do good,' said Shepard. McKenzie, who runs under the colours of Westville athletics club, described this year's down run as being the most difficult race he has ever run since he begun his Comrades journey. His Comrades also came after he faced health complications, which made it even more difficult. 'It was getting late and getting dark. Even though I was facing my fair share of challenges on the road you notice things around you and I also noticed the young girl who was supporting other runners, and was pacing up and down. I thought it was very special,' said McKenzie. He said he knew too well how panic starts to set in when you are on the stretch of the road with just nine kilometres to go to the finish. 'Maddyson was, however, helping other runners in putting one foot on top of another,' said McKenzie

David Beckham's knighthood celebrated worldwide
David Beckham, the Manchester United and England legend, has finally received the honour he's waited more than a decade for. King Charles III knighted David Beckham for his services to sport and charity. Beckham's journey to knighthood has not been straightforward. He first received an OBE in 2003, but his elevation to 'Sir David' took years. His nomination was reportedly delayed due to issues with HM Revenue and Customs, but persistence paid off, according to ESPN. Now, at 50, Beckham joins the ranks of sporting royalty, alongside the likes of Sir Lewis Hamilton and Sir Andy Murray. Beckham's reaction was heartfelt. 'To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and a boyhood dream come true,' he said. 'Off the pitch, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world. I have also supported and worked with incredible organisations. These organisations supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation. I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do. I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a little while for the news to sink in. I'm immensely proud, and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family'. Beckham's knighthood is not just a personal triumph. His wife, Victoria, now holds the title of Lady Beckham. Their children—Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper—shared their pride on social media. Romeo posted a beaming photo with his father, writing, 'So proud of you'. The whole Beckham family is basking in the glow of this achievement. David Beckham's impact stretches far beyond the pitch. He played a key role in securing London's 2012 Olympic Games, and he's been a UNICEF ambassador since 2005. He's also the ambassador for King Charles' charity, The King's Foundation. King Charles III knighted David Beckham for his services to sport and charity. As Beckham himself put it: 'Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British. I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour'. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
