FBI takes down Anti-Tren gang members in largest bust yet in violent migrant turf war
Of those 16 gang members, 14 are charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 5 kilograms of cocaine, and two are charged separately with various weapons offenses based on their alleged possession and sale of firearms, according to the Justice Department.
"These arrests are the largest takedown of suspected Anti-Tren members and associates by the FBI, so far, and they happened right here in Houston," FBI Houston Special Agent in Charge Douglas Williams said in a Monday statement. "These individuals are accused of engaging in a turf war with TdA members and carrying out numerous violent crimes throughout our city, including a mass shooting at a local sports bar that left six people wounded."
Charges alleged that Anti-Tren is a criminal organization mostly composed of former TdA members known for its deadly turf wars, as well as gun and drug trafficking.
"The Southern District's twin priorities are securing our border and the eradication of violent crime. This case implicates both," U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei said in a Monday statement. "Operation Take Back America means going on the offensive against transnational criminal organizations to ensure that they cannot take root in our community and endanger public safety. SDTX is going to be unapologetic in carrying out that mission."
If convicted on the drug charges, the suspects face up to life in prison and a possible $10 million fine.
Those charged separately with firearms offenses could receive up to 15 years in prison.
Jose Miguel Briceno, a 25-year-old illegal immigrant from Venezuela living in Houston, is also charged separately with unlawful possession of ammunition by an alien after he was allegedly involved in a mass shooting in March at the Latinas Sports Bar club in Houston, where six people were wounded, including four in critical condition.
Briceno is accused of using a firearm to shoot inside the doorway of the bar and then discarding the gun. Officials were unable to locate the weapon.
He faces up to 15 years in prison and a maximum $250,000 fine if convicted.
The U.S. Attorney's Office is prosecuting the case with the Department of Justice's Joint Task Force Vulcan (JTFV), which was created to combat MS-13 and expanded to include TdA under Attorney General Pam Bondi.
The 16 arrests come as part of Operation Take Back America, "a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime," according to the DOJ.

Woman says she was attacked before her baby was kidnapped in San Bernardino County
A couple is pleading for the public's help after they say their 7-month-old baby was kidnapped in Yucaipa. On Aug. 14, around 7 p.m., Rebecca Haro said she, her husband and their two other children were at a local park for their son's football practice. She drove over to a Big 5 Sporting Goods store on the 34000 block of Yucaipa Boulevard to buy a mouthguard for her older son. She brought her baby, Emmanuel Haro, along with her. 'I came over here and parked right on the edge,' she told KTLA's Ellina Abovian. 'When I was driving over, I smelled the baby had went to the restroom, so I said, 'Don't worry, we are going to change you.'' After parking, Rebecca laid the baby down next to the car seat to change his diaper. The last thing she remembers is hearing a stranger's voice before she was attacked. 'I was going to get the diaper and somebody said, 'Hola,' and I don't remember anything since,' she recalled in tears. 'I woke up here on the floor and I didn't see Emmanuel.' Rebecca woke up with a black eye and with her baby nowhere in sight. She frantically searched around the car and ran into the Big 5 store before she called 911. San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and dispatched K9 scent-tracking dogs to track the child down. 'Everybody came,' Rebecca said. 'The dogs, the helicopters.' But so far, authorities have not located Emmanuel. The boy's father, Jake Haro, said his family doesn't have enemies and they can't imagine why anyone would want to take their baby. 'Whoever took my son, please return him,' he said. 'We just want him back. We won't do anything to you. Just give us our son. Keep him safe, don't hurt him, make sure you feed him and change him.' 'If you know anything, please come forward or take him to the cops,' Rebecca said. 'Please come and bring my son back. I'm begging you.' The baby boy is approximately 24 inches tall and weighs about 21 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes and is cross-eyed, authorities said. He was last seen wearing a black Nike onesie. Authorities said an AMBER Alert was not activated because the case did not meet the criteria as there is no suspect or vehicle description. Friends and family members have begun a search party effort on Friday night. As new details emerge in the case of an allegedly kidnapped 7-month-old boy in San Bernardino County, authorities have reportedly taken the couple's two-year-old and searched the home with cadaver dogs, while an independent group devoted to finding missing kids has withdrawn its offered reward and suspended its search efforts. On Aug. 14, Rebecca Haro, the boy's mother, initially told investigators that she left her husband, Jake Mitchell Haro, and their other two children at a local park where one of the boys was having football practice to go purchase a mouthguard for him. 'I came over here and parked right on the edge,' she told KTLA. 'When I was driving over, I smelled the baby had went to the restroom, so I said, 'Don't worry, we are going to change you.'' Officials with both the Riverside and San Bernardino county sheriff departments deployed K-9 units and helicopters during an extensive manhunt that was ultimately unsuccessful. An AMBER Alert was never issued in the alleged kidnapping because it didn't meet the criteria without a suspect or vehicle descriptions. Authorities now say Emmanuel's mother and father have been less than cooperative in the investigation. Sheriff's investigators said that when confronted with inconsistencies in her story, Rebecca refused to continue speaking to authorities. The child's grandmother, who believes the couple is innocent, said investigators asked Rebecca to take a lie detector test but that her husband Jake refused the request until they had a lawyer present. Riverside County Superior Court records show that Jake Mitchell Haro has a June 2023 felony conviction for child cruelty from a 2018 arrest in Hemet, The Orange County Register reported. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 48 months of probation and is scheduled to appear in court in early September for an alleged probation violation. While friends and family launched a search effort Friday night, authorities on Saturday reportedly searched the couple's Cabazon home and brought along cadaver dogs. Renowned comedian arrested in Southern California again 'At this point in the investigation, investigators are unable to rule out foul play in the disappearance of Emmanuel,' authorities with SBSD's Specialized Investigations Division stated before adding that the investigation remains ongoing. Officials with the Uvalde Foundation for Kids, who were offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of Emmanuel, according to The Register, called off their independent search less than a day after announcing the effort. 'We cannot in good conscience, utilize our team and resources when so much is missing in this case. Of particular concern to us lies within the inconsistencies in the details and the sudden decision by the mother to end communication with law enforcement and our team…Something is not right in this whole picture,' the foundation's founder Daniel Chapin told the outlet. In the meantime, Rebecca and Jake Haro continue to plead for the safe return of the 7-month-old. Emmanuel is about 24 inches tall and weighs about 21 pounds.
