Decatur man facing domestic violence charge after alleged assault
Kobe Malik Cowan, 20, of Decatur was being held in Morgan County Jail with no bond pending an Aniah's Law hearing.
Police said they responded to a domestic disturbance at 2222 Acadia Drive S.W. around 12:53 a.m. and determined that Cowan had unlawfully entered and remained inside the apartment before assaulting the victim. He was later located by a patrol officer and taken into custody.
Cowan has been out on bond for a prior felony charge of second-degree receiving stolen property involving a firearm stolen from Bama Pawn, according to a police affidavit.

Average caskets run between $2,000 and $5,000 in the United States, but some made of mahogany, bronze or copper can cost upward of $10,000, according to the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Consumer Advice department. "A casket is generally the most expensive part of a funeral, assuming you are planning for a traditional full-service burial," Cowan says. The FTC warns that funeral directors are required to show you a full list of the caskets they sell, complete with prices and descriptions, prior to actually showing you the caskets in real life, to ensure that you aren't steered away from the opportunity to purchase lower-priced models. Funeral home fees are also high up on the list of costs, Cowan says. They "generally start at around $2,000 and can go up significantly depending on the provider." Life after death? A wave of states move to legalize human composting. How much does a funeral cost? In total, funerals in the United States usually cost between $3,000 and $5,000, Cowan says, noting the final price tag is "based on additional factors like location, type of service and practical considerations, including floral arrangements or casket selection." If those costs seem overwhelming or even impossible, there are some ways to receive assistance, or at least bring some of the costs down: Above all, Cowan says, it's important to focus on honoring the "stories and life experiences" of the deceased, which doesn't need to cost a fortune. "One option for doing this is to host a gathering for friends and family to share stories and memories of your loved one," she says. "Planting a tree or garden as a living memorial can be a lovely, lasting tribute. And simply incorporating the values your loved one passed on as well as important lessons learned in your own life can be very meaningful."

Man arrested for ‘years of recurring theft' from Decatur business
DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The Decatur Police Department says a man was arrested Tuesday for what the police are calling 'years of recurring theft' from a local business. DPD said Joel Phillip Ghrigsby, 63, was arrested and charged with first-degree theft after the search of a home in Trinity. Lockheed Martin to open large missile assembly building in Courtland early 2026 According to the department, the investigation into the theft began on August 6, when a Decatur business owner reported an internal theft at their business in the 2300 block of 6th Ave. SE. Police said during the investigation, they found Ghrigsby was involved and tied to what police called 'multiple years of recurring theft from the business. DPD said investigators found evidence that linked Ghrigsby to over $114,000 of property theft from the business. The department said on August 12, Decatur police, with help from the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, served a search and arrest warrant in the 20000 block of County Road 460 in Trinity. DPD said Ghrigsby was located at the home and arrested. Authorities said Ghrigsby was transported to the Morgan County Jail and held on a $30,000 cash bond, per a Morgan County Circuit Court Judge. Man accused of Aniah Blanchard killing to face trial on capital murder charges
The man charged with the killing Aniah Blanchard in October 2019 will now face trial. Ibraheem Yazeed faces three charges of capital murder for allegedly kidnapping and murdering Blanchard, the stepdaughter of former UFC heavyweight Walt Harris. Yazeed will face trial March 2 in Macon County (Ala.) court, according to the Montgomery Advertiser. What happened to Aniah Blanchard? Blanchard, 19, was a college student at Auburn University when she went missing. Her disappearance was reported and an extensive search from authorities and volunteers ensued. Through surveillance camera and witness interviews, police concluded Blanchard and Yazeed ran into one another at a local convenience store. Footage showed Yazeed entering and exiting Blanchard's car. Yazeed, then 29, was eventually located and arrested. Blanchard's remains were located, as was her car. A "life-threatening amount of blood" was found in the vehicle. An autopsy showed Blanchard was shot to death. At the time of the alleged murder, Yazeed was out on $295,000 bail for multiple charges, including kidnapping and attempted murder from a prior incident. Since his arrest, Yazeed has been incarcerated without bond. He faces the death penalty. Aniah's Law Following Blanchard's death, "Aniah's Law" was passed in Alabama. The amendment tweaked laws that said only capital offenders would not have a right to reasonable bail. "Aniah's Law" added a series of serious crimes for which bail would not be allowed for accused offenders, like Yazeed was. Such offenses include first-degree rape, sexual torture, sodomy, terrorism, robbery, human trafficking and more.
