Yankees Tabbed as Contender to Trade for $81 Million 2-Time All-Star

The New York Yankees bullpen has a 3.48 ERA this season. The team thought it was getting a dominant closer when it acquired Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers, but he has been inconsistent.
Williams has pitched better as of late, but he lost the closer role to Luke Weaver for a while, until Weaver himself landed on the injured list. Right now, it looks like Williams has a hold of the closer's role again, but the Yankees may still be interested in upgrading the backend of their bullpen.
Weaver and Williams are a great duo when both are pitching well. However, ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan suggested the Yankees could be a contender to trade for two-time All-Star Ryan Helsley.

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - AUGUST 09: Ryan Helsley #56 of the St. Louis Cardinals celebrates an 8-5 win against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on August 09, 2024 in Kansas City, Missouri.Helsley led all of baseball in saves last season and won the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award. He has not been as dominant this year, but he could be a solid addition to the Yankees' bullpen.
He would be insurance should something happen, and Weaver and Williams are both unfit to close games. He would also give Aaron Boone another leverage arm to deploy.
The Cardinals could fall out of contention between now and the July 31 trade deadline. Helsley will be a free agent after the season, and the Cardinals are not likely to pay him anywhere close to the six-year, $81 million deal he is projected to earn.
The Yankees do not necessarily need any more right-handed relievers, but turning down the opportunity to add a pitcher with Helsley's track record would be tough.

Serena Williams opens up about 31-pound weight loss using GLP-1 medication: ‘Something I suffered with'
Tennis great Serena Williams has opened up about her incredible weight-loss journey, revealing that she lost 31 pounds with the help of a GLP-1 medication. The 23-time Grand Slam champion revealed in interviews with People magazine and "Today" that she turned to a GLP-1 medication after struggling with her health following the birth of her second daughter. "In particular after having my second kid, I was never able to be at a healthy weight that I could be at, whether it was my joints or blood sugar levels. It was just always something I suffered with and a lot of women actually go through this," Williams said during an appearance on "Today" Thursday. Williams, 43, said that despite being a trained athlete, she struggled to lose weight regardless of how active she was. She said it began to take a toll on her joints. "No matter what I did — running, walking, I would walk for hours because they say that's good, I literally was playing a professional sport — and I could never go back to where I needed to be for my health. Then, after my second kid, it just even got harder. So then I was like, OK, I have to try something different." Williams said she decided to be open about her journey in order to destigmatize the use of GLP-1 medication for weight loss. "A misconception is that it's a shortcut," she told "Today." "As an athlete and as someone that has done everything, I just couldn't get my weight to where I needed to be at a healthy place — and believe me, I don't take shortcuts." Williams told People magazine separately that despite her new look, her confidence level has never wavered. Her decision to make a change was based on something entirely different. "I've never felt that pressure to maintain a certain appearance," she said. "I always felt comfortable at any size, whether I was a lot heavier or not. I do feel like my body didn't like me at that weight. I had pain in my joints and pain in different areas just because of the extra weight that I'm not used to carrying since I had children." "But the size I was before, there was nothing wrong with it. It's just not what I wanted to have. I just knew that I wanted to be where I personally felt comfortable." GLP-1s, also known as GLP-1 agonists, are a type of drug that mimics a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 that helps to regulate blood sugar levels.

Yankees vs. Red Sox odds, picks, predictions: Target this prop Thursday
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. For the first time in years, the Yankees and Red Sox will play a massive series late in the MLB regular season. The suddenly surging Yanks have a tenuous grip on the top wild-card spot in the American League, but the Red Sox are just 1.5 games behind the Bombers. Both teams are keeping an eye on the Kansas City Royals, who are the last team out at the moment. The Yankees have also clawed their way within four games of the Toronto Blue Jays in the race for first place in the AL East. The stakes could hardly be higher at this time of year, which should lead to a raucous atmosphere at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night. Yankees vs. Red Sox odds, predictions Team Moneyline Total Red Sox +125 Over 8 (-120) Yankees -150 Under 8 (+100) Odds via bet365 Winners of five straight, the Yankees are firing on all cylinders right now but the offense is driving the bus. The Bombers have scored a ridiculous 43 runs over their last five games, and now boast the best run differential in the American League at plus-111. The offense will come back down to earth, but they should be in a good position to keep rolling Thursday night against Lucas Giolito. Lucas Giolito is a regression candidate for the Red Sox. Getty Images On the surface, the veteran right-hander looks to be having a strong season with an 8-2 record to go along with a 3.63 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 106 2/3 innings. Under the hood, things are not as rosy for the 31-year-old. Giolito's 5.27 xERA is nearly two runs higher than his actual number, and his xFIP currently sits at 4.39. He ranks in the 31st percentile in strikeout rate, 22nd percentile in barrel percentage and 15th percentile in average exit velocity among qualified pitchers. Betting on Baseball? Giolito has been bailed out by a .274 BABIP. The Yankees will counter with Luis Gil, who owns a 5.14 ERA in 14 1/3 innings since returning to action. The 2024 AL Rookie of the Year was better in his last outing, allowing just one run on four hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings against the Cardinals, but he's struggling to limit free passes, which is to be expected after such a lengthy absence. Gil should continue to improve, especially with Boston's offense scuffling, but the price on the Yankee moneyline seems a bit lofty. Instead, we'll back the red-hot offense to touch up Giolito and soar Over their team total.
