Environment Canada ends special air quality statement for Ottawa

(Ted Raymond/CTV News Ottawa) A special air quality statement that was in effect in Ottawa due to wildfire smoke ended just before 6 p.m. Monday. On Monday morning, Environment Canada said smoky conditions could have lingered longer, but the air quality health index (AQHI) in Ottawa had dropped to 2, or low risk, by the time the statement was lifted. The AQHI for Ottawa was 5, or moderate, at 10 a.m., and had fallen to 2 by 5 p.m. The forecast says it could rise to 4, a moderate risk, by Monday night before dropping back into the low risk category on Tuesday. While the air quality statement for Ottawa has ended, one remains in effect over much of southern Ontario, including along the St. Lawrence River, as of late Monday afternoon. The forecast on shows a thin blanket of wildfire smoke from the Prairies still resting over much of Ontario. The forecast for Monday night calls for a few clouds with some local smoke and a low of 14 C. Tuesday's forecast is cloudy in the morning, clearing in the afternoon, with a high of 27 C and a humidex of 32. The AQHI is forecast to be 3, or low risk, on Tuesday. There could be some local smoke in the air Tuesday night. Wednesday's outlook is partly cloudy with a 30 per cent chance of showers and a high of 29 C. Ways to deal with smoke Environment Canada says there are ways to deal with wildfire smoke, both inside and outside your home. 'Actions can include using a clean, good quality air filter in your ventilation system and/or a certified portable air cleaner that can filter fine particles,' the weather agency says. 'If you must spend time outdoors, a well-constructed, well-fitting and properly worn respirator type mask (such as a NIOSH-certified N95 or equivalent respirator) can reduce your exposure to the fine particles in the smoke. Even though exposure may be reduced, there can still be risks to health.'

A group of childhood best friends from Ottawa decided to take on the Ironman challenge with a mission to raise money for cancer research. Tyler Booth's mom Carole Rocheleau died of lung and liver cancer earlier this year. He and his friends ran the Ironman to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society in her honour, bringing in more than $22,000. Here are the times for Booth and his five friends. On race day, CTV News Ottawa spoke to the family of Graeme Barber who, at 82, was the oldest participant taking part in Sunday's event. This was Barber's 10th Ironman race, according to his daughter. Unfortunately, Barber did not finish but completed the swim portion in 1:55:12 and the bike portion in 8:32:19. The Ironman Tracker app says he ran 17.9 kilometres in the marathon portion. Ottawa City Councillor Theresa Kavanagh competed Sunday, finishing with a time of 15:52:24. Top finishers The top man and woman to run Sunday's Ironman were Luke Evans, a Carleton University graduate, who finished first overall with a time of 8:40:22, and Aliisa Heiskanen, of Gatineau, who finished first among women with a time of 9:32:41. Registration open for 2026 Ironman Canada-Ottawa Athletes can now register for next year's Ottawa Ironman. The even is scheduled to take place Aug. 2, 2026. Wildfire smoke blanketing Ottawa could linger into Tuesday

(Ted Raymond/CTV News Ottawa) Environment Canada says a cloud of wildfire smoke that is covering the nation's capital could hang overhead into Tuesday. A special air quality statement is in effect for much of the region as smoke continues to affect most of southern and eastern Ontario. 'The wildfire smoke may persist into tonight and possibly Tuesday before finally easing,' Environment Canada says. 'Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour.' The air quality health index (AQHI) for Ottawa was 5, or moderate, at 10 a.m. It is expected to remain around a 5 for most of the day before dropping to a 4, still in the moderate risk category, overnight. The forecast for Monday calls for widespread smoke with a high of 27 C and a humidex of 32. The UV index is 7, or high. Expect a few clouds overnight and low of 15 C. Tuesday's forecast is cloudy in the morning, clearing in the afternoon, with a high of 27 C and a humidex of 32. The AQHI is forecast to drop to 3, or low risk, on Tuesday.
