McLaren's Lando Norris blames himself as critics question his mettle

IMOLA, Italy - Lando Norris said he had been simply not quick enough after another disappointing qualifying session at Imola on May 17 left the McLaren driver facing accusations of crumbling under pressure.
Norris will start the May 18 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in fourth place on the grid while Australian teammate and championship leader Oscar Piastri lines up on pole position for the third time in seven races this season.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Mercedes' George Russell also qualified ahead of Norris.
The McLaren drivers had dominated practice, finishing all three sessions one-two with Norris quicker than Piastri in the May 17 final session before qualifying.
Then it all went wrong when it mattered.
"I made a lot of mistakes. Never good enough in my final lap in qualifying, everyone goes quicker and I go slower," said Norris, who is 16 points adrift of Piastri after leading the standings early on.
"Not good enough, the car is mega and it is the best car on track. I'm not going to blame the car. I felt good all weekend but when I try and go for lap time it does not go," he told reporters.
"In my whole career qualifying has been my biggest strength by a long way but this year it is not coming my way."
'Collapses with pressure'
Canadian Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion with Williams who now attends races as a television pundit, suggested Norris was feeling the pressure of being up against a very quick teammate.
"Last year, Lando was the qualifier of the team. And now Lando collapses every time there's a little bit of pressure, and Piastri seems to make a step," he told Sky Sports television.
Team boss Andrea Stella said Piastri had kept his calm but Norris was still searching for performance even as McLaren racked up five wins in six races.
"For Lando, I think the loss was distributed in a couple of corners, not just in one place," said the Italian.
"We know that at the moment for Lando when it's about finding the last 10th of a second, he still needs to find the perfect feeling with the MCL39 (car). So, we are working on that, and I'm sure this will be improving for the future.
"But when it comes to race pace, we are very strong with both drivers, and we look forward to tomorrow." REUTERS

The 21-year-old secured a hard-fought 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 6-4 win over the world number one in difficult, windy conditions at Roland Garros. 'I felt like this is one I really wanted, because I do think this was one of the tournaments that when I was younger that I felt I had the best shot of winning,' said American star Gauff. 'So I just felt like if I went through my career and didn't get at least one of these, I would feel regrets and stuff. 'Today, playing Aryna, I was just, 'I just gotta go for it and try my best to get through the match'.' It was a long-awaited success for Gauff, who was in tears after losing the 2022 French Open final to Iga Swiatek as a teenager and had reached at least the quarter-finals in Paris in each of the previous four years. 'That ceremony when Iga won, I just remembered trying to take it all in and pay attention to every detail and just feel like I wanted that experience for myself,' added the world number two, who also came back from a set down to beat Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open final. 'When the anthem got played, I vividly remember watching her, pretty emotional when the Polish anthem got played. I was, like, 'Wow, this is such a cool moment'. 'So when the (USA) anthem got played today, I kind of had those reflections.' 'Not a day for great tennis' Gauff is the first woman to beat a world number one in a Grand Slam final from a set down since Venus Williams against Lindsay Davenport at Wimbledon in 2005. It was her first title since lifting the WTA Finals trophy in 2024, after suffering final defeats in both the Madrid and Italian Opens to Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini respectively. Sabalenka called the conditions 'terrible', as the wind swirled after the roof was opened shortly before the start of the match. 'It was not a day for great tennis, honestly,' admitted Gauff. 'I don't know too many people that could play great tennis today, but it's part of the sport and part of playing outside.' American film director and diehard New York Knicks fan Spike Lee was in attendance and celebrated with Gauff after her victory. 'I wanted to tell him, I had to do it, that even though the Knicks didn't win, I gave him something to cheer for,' she said, in reference to the Knicks' defeat by the Indiana Pacers in the NBA's Eastern Conference Finals last weekend. Both players struggled on serve, especially in a 77-minute first set featuring eight breaks. Sabalenka said she thought Swiatek would have beaten Gauff if she had not ended the Pole's title defence in the semi-finals, but the actual champion shot down those thoughts. 'I don't agree with that. I'm sitting here,' said Gauff, who thrashed Swiatek 6-1, 6-1 in the Madrid semi-finals last month, taking a glance at the trophy next to her. 'Last time I played – no shade to Iga or anything, but I played her and I won in straight sets. 'I don't think that's a fair thing to say, because anything can really happen.' The German has won his first three matches in charge with no goals conceded but had it not been for Harry Kane's 50th-minute goal his team would have faced humiliation against a side ranked 173rd in the world. After collecting the three points that put England in command of Group K, Tuchel made no attempt to sugar coat a performance that was way below par. 'We can just admit it that it's not what we expect from us. We need to look at it in detail and do better on Tuesday,' the German told ITV Sport. 'We lost all momentum after the first 25 minutes and lacked the quality and the energy. I was most worried in the last 20 minutes, I did not like the attitude that we ended the game with. I didn't like the lack of urgency. It is still a World Cup qualifier away from home.' England had 83 per cent of the possession against a nation they had scored 25 goals against without reply in six previous meetings, but suffered from a chronic lack of imagination. Asked if his message before the game had not got through to his players, Tuchel added: 'The message got across because we had a good 25 minutes but then the energy and the determination weren't there anymore.'
