Kuwait seeks Arab Handball Cup final spot against Bahrain

Arab Times08-05-2025

KUWAIT CITY, May 8: Kuwait's national handball team faces a pivotal challenge at 7:00 pm today when it meets Bahrain in the semi-finals of the 10th Arab Handball Cup, hosted at the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Sports Complex. The tournament runs through May 11.
Earlier in the day, the other semi-final will see a highly anticipated clash between Qatar and Egypt at 5:00 pm.
As part of the classification rounds (5th–9th place), two matches are scheduled earlier in the day. Tunisia will take on Morocco at 1:00 pm, followed by Saudi Arabia against Iraq at 3:00 pm.
Kuwait enters the semi-final with momentum, aiming for a third consecutive victory to secure a place in Sunday's final. Backed by home support and the advantage of playing on familiar turf, the Kuwaiti team hopes to overcome a tough and determined Bahraini side, also eager to reach the final.
Bahrain, on its part, will rely on a quick transition game and solid teamwork under coach Predrag. Veteran players Hussein Al-Sayyad and goalkeeper Mohammed Abdul-Hussein are expected to lead the effort against the host.
In the second semi-final, Group B leader Qatar will count on a blend of youth and experience to push past Egypt and reach the final. Egypt, which advanced as the best second-placed team, is looking to bounce back from a group stage loss to Bahrain and challenge Qatar for a place in the championship match.
Qaid Al-Adwani, Secretary-General of the Kuwait Handball Federation and Director of the 10th Arab Cup, confirmed that the final will take place as scheduled on Sunday at 7:00 pm.
He explained that the tournament dates were selected to align with International Handball Federation Week and the calendar of the Arab Handball Federation. The final will coincide with the Premier League football title decider on the same day.
'There is coordination with the Kuwait Football Association,' Al-Adwani noted. 'However, due to schedule constraints on both sides, Sunday remained the only viable option for the handball final.'
Players of Kuwait's national team expressed joy following their win over the UAE in the final group stage match, which secured their top spot in Group C and a semi-final berth.
Star player Abdulaziz Al-Shammari remarked, 'Winning two matches, topping the group, and reaching the semi-finals is the least we can offer Kuwait and its loyal fans. We are proud to host the Arab Handball Cup in Kuwait for the first time in 23 years — in the land of friendship and peace.'
Goalkeeper Hassan Safar added, 'Our true joy lies in bringing happiness to our loyal fans who have supported us from the start. We call on them to fill the stands tonight and back us against Bahrain.'

Pizzi: Kuwait will fight until the end in the World Cup qualifier against Palestine

KUWAIT CITY, June 4: Argentinian coach Juan Pizzi reaffirmed that his objective with the Kuwaiti national football team is simple: to win. It's a goal shared by Palestine, with both teams determined to keep their hopes of qualifying for the next round alive. Speaking at a press conference yesterday at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, Pizzi said, 'The Blues are ready for the match,' emphasizing that the technical staff has selected the best players available for the squad. He praised the players' enthusiasm, particularly with the match being played on home soil, and expressed satisfaction with the team's recent performances. He noted that every player has been working hard and delivering a strong showing in training, aiming to secure victories in the final two group matches. Pizzi emphasized his commitment to possession-based, high-performance football—an approach he has maintained throughout his coaching career. He pointed to clear signs of progress in Kuwait's style of play since he took charge last July, saying he remains optimistic ahead of the Palestine match. Addressing the imminent expiration of his contract in July, Pizzi stated, 'I have developed a general plan for the future beyond the qualifiers. Whether I continue or not, the aim is to develop the team and work hard to raise our level.' He also underlined the importance of investing in young talent, saying, 'Including young players is essential to the future of the game. They must be active in the domestic league to support our developmental goals.' Mishari Ghannam confirmed that all players are prepared and motivated to perform at their best. 'We haven't lost our passion for victory. We will fight to achieve our goal and give it our all until the final match,' he said. On the opposing side, Palestine coach Ihab Abu Jazar expressed appreciation to Kuwait for its warm reception and ongoing support for the Palestinian team. 'We're playing to win and revive hope, even if only a glimmer. We believe in our players until the final whistle,' he said. Abu Jazar also praised the improvements in Kuwait's team since the Gulf Cup 26, noting that certain circumstances had worked against them in previous qualifiers. 'We've studied Kuwait carefully. Our goal is to claim the three most crucial points in our qualifying campaign,' he added.

Kuwait concludes preparations for must-win World Cup qualifier against Palestine

KUWAIT CITY, June 3: Kuwait concludes its training this evening at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, ahead of its crucial clash against Palestine tomorrow in the ninth round of Group B of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Kuwait began a training camp yesterday that will continue before traveling to Seoul this Friday to face South Korea in the tenth and final round of the qualifiers next Tuesday. Led by Argentine coach Juan Antonio Pizzi, the national team is determined to secure victories in both upcoming matches to keep its slim hopes of advancing to the playoffs alive. However, qualification is also dependent on Oman losing its two remaining matches, making Kuwait's path extremely difficult. Currently, Kuwait sits sixth and last in Group B with five points, while South Korea tops the table with 16, followed by Jordan (13), Iraq (12), Oman (10), and Palestine (6). Coach Pizzi has been steadily raising the intensity of training to bring players to peak performance levels. The technical staff has emphasized focus and minimizing errors while implementing some rotations due to recent changes in the squad compared to the lineup from last March's qualifiers. A pre-match press conference will be held today, today at noon at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, featuring the head coaches and a player from each team. The press conference will follow the technical coordination meeting scheduled for 11:00 AM at the same venue. The Kuwait Football Association began selling tickets for the match earlier this week and is urging fans to show up in large numbers. Fan support will be critical, as the team clings to a last chance at qualification, despite the difficulty of the task. Meanwhile, the Palestine national team held its second training session at Thamer Stadium, home of Al-Salmiya Club, and will conduct its final training tonight at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium. The Palestinian delegation also honored striker Wissam Abu Ali for winning the Egyptian Premier League title with Al-Ahly, celebrating his achievement ahead of the pivotal qualifier.

Behbehani leads Kuwait's challenge at Asian Junior Gymnastics Championships

SEOUL, June 3: The Kuwaiti artistic gymnastics team is participating in the 18th Asian Junior Championships, taking place in South Korea from June 5 to 8. Representing the team is rising talent Abdullah Behbehani, who continues to make strides on the international stage. Behbehani recently delivered strong performances at the West Asian Youth and Junior Championships in Amman, Jordan, and the Luxembourg International Open Artistic Gymnastics Championships—both held last May. The Kuwaiti delegation departed for Seoul, led by team manager Khaled Al-Mazen. The traveling party also includes Ukrainian coach Vitaly Arsenyev, international referee Salah Askar, and athlete Abdullah Behbehani. The Kuwait Gymnastics Federation extended its best wishes to Behbehani ahead of the tournament, noting the elevated level of competition at the Asian Championship compared to previous events. The federation, however, expressed full confidence in Behbehani's dedication and potential to represent Kuwaiti gymnastics with pride. 'This championship offers a valuable opportunity for Abdullah to engage with some of Asia's top gymnasts, test his skills under pressure, and continue his development,' the federation stated. The participation in this continental championship is part of a broader, long-term strategy to prepare Behbehani for future international milestones, including the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.
