Man loses over Rs 50 lakh in online trading scam

Kochi: A Muvattupuzha resident lost over Rs 50 lakh in an online scam. According to the police, the victim came across an advertisement about online trading on social media and clicked on a link attached with it.

He was then added to a WhatsApp group.
The accused then contacted him and convinced him to invest in the stock market with promises of high returns. He subsequently deposited Rs 52.85 lakh into various accounts. However, the accused then ended all contact with him. The victim approached police soon after.
Two held for taking bribe: Vigilance and anti-corruption bureau (VACB) on Monday arrested a village field assistant and a retired village assistant for taking a bribe for allotting a title deed (patta).
Police identified the arrested persons as Thambi, retired village assistant of Chowara, and Navas, a village field assistant.
According to VACB, the complainant, a Kakkanad native, submitted an application before the Chowara village office to obtain a title deed for his 1.24-acre land. Subsequently, Thambi and Navas inspected his property on April 24. They then demanded Rs 10,000 as a bribe. The complainant then told the officials that he did not have that much money with him and they returned.
When the application was not processed, the complainant contacted the officials and they repeated the demand for a bribe. However, Thambi had retired from service by then and the complainant was unaware of this when he called to enquire about the issue.
He then approached Ernakulam vigilance DSP with a complaint. Thambi was arrested red-handed when he accepted the money from the complainant near Chowara village office.

Navas, who was in the area, was soon arrested. The accused were presented in court and remanded in judicial custody.
Odisha native held with ganja: A migrant worker was caught with 2kg of ganja on Tuesday. Police identified the arrested person as Rajesh Deegal, 23, a native of Ganjam, Odisha. He was captured while attempting to hand over the ganja near the Perumbavoor bus stand after arriving in Aluva by train from Odisha.
The ganja, purchased for Rs 3,000 from Odisha, was being sold here for Rs 20,000, police said.

A bench comprising justices S M Subramaniam and G Arul Murugan appreciated the CBI for its swift action and directed it to file a status report on 24 September on further progress in the case. Noting that the agency is yet to receive the files relating to the connected jewel theft case, during the inquiry of which Ajithkumar was subjected to custodial torture, the Bench directed the state police to hand over the case files to the CBI within a week, with further directions to the CBI to register an FIR and probe the case expeditiously. During the hearing, Additional Advocate General M Ajmal Khan informed the court that the additional compensation of Rs 25 lakh, which was directed to be paid to the victim's family, had been disbursed and that witness protection had been extended to five witnesses in the case based on a direction from the Sivagangai district court. However, one of the petitioners' counsel told the court that the direction of the district court had not been implemented in entirety and that the witnesses still lacked some protection, such as fencing. He also highlighted the absence of a vulnerable witness deposition centre in Madurai. The Bench directed the Thirupuvanam police inspector to verify whether the order regarding witness protection had been fully implemented within a week.

New Delhi: Multinational conglomerate IKEA plans to double the number of its stores and customer touchpoints across the nation over the next 12 to 18 months, according to Jesper Brodin, CEO of Ingka Group, which owns IKEA globally. The expansion will include both large-format stores and smaller outlets in malls and city centres. According to Brodin, the company is committed to rapid expansion in India and plans to increase local sourcing from its current 30 per cent to 50 per cent by 2030 as part of its long-term strategy. Additionally, he disclosed that plans to open 5–6 new touchpoints in India every year over the next five years. IKEA intends to double the number of its stores and customer service centres nationwide. IKEA has big plans for the Delhi NCR area as part of its retail expansion, with big stores opening in Noida and Gurgaon. Two additional large stores are also planned for South India, though the precise locations have not yet been disclosed. IKEA currently runs three sizable stores in Bengaluru, Navi Mumbai, and Hyderabad. The company has already invested Rs 10,500 crore in India and has ventured into online retail, providing 24-hour delivery services in a few locations. Regarding sourcing, IKEA has 45 Indian suppliers, mostly in the textile and toy industries. The company's products are well-known throughout the world for their modern design, affordability, and usefulness. The Swedish firm anticipates India to be its fastest-growing market over the next 20 years, with a particular emphasis on customer experience, product range, and expansion. In order to reach a larger consumer base, IKEA's growth strategy consists of a combination of large-format stores, smaller city centre outlets, and an online presence. Since its 1943 founding in Sweden, IKEA has expanded to become a major player in the home furnishings industry, operating more than 400 stores across multiple nations.
