Google says it will appeal online search antitrust decision

Time of India2 days ago

HighlightsAlphabet's Google announced its intention to appeal a recent antitrust decision regarding its online search competition dominance. A federal judge has proposed less aggressive remedies than the 10-year regime suggested by antitrust enforcers, which included the potential sale of Google Ad Manager. The United States Department of Justice and a coalition of states are concerned about Google's monopoly in search and its implications for competition in artificial intelligence products.
Alphabet

Google
on Saturday said it will appeal an antitrust decision under which a federal judge proposed less aggressive ways to restore
online search competition
than the 10-year regime suggested by antitrust enforcers
"We will wait for the Court's opinion. And we still strongly believe the Court's original decision was wrong, and look forward to our eventual appeal," Google said in a post on X.
US District Judge Amit Mehta in Washington heard closing arguments on Friday at a trial on proposals to address Google's illegal monopoly in online search and related advertising.
In April, a federal judge said that Google illegally dominated two markets for online advertising technology, with the
US Department of Justice
saying that Google should sell off at least its
Google Ad Manager
, which includes the company's publisher ad server and its ad exchange.
The DOJ and a coalition of states want Google to share search data and cease multibillion-dollar payments to Apple and other smartphone makers to be the default search engine on new devices.
Antitrust enforcers are concerned about how Google's search monopoly gives it an advantage in artificial intelligence products like
Gemini
and vice versa.
John Schmidtlein, an attorney for Google, said at the hearing that while generative AI is influencing how search looks, Google has addressed any concerns about competition in AI by no longer entering exclusive agreements with wireless carriers and smartphone makers including Samsung Electronics, leaving them free to load rival search and AI apps on new devices.

Facebook parent Meta becomes the latest American company to 'go nuclear' for AI

Meta has signed a 20-year agreement to secure nuclear power to meet the growing energy demands for artificial intelligence and other computing needs at Facebook's parent company. According to a report by Associated Press, the deal will also boost the output of Constellation Energy's Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois. Announced on June 3, the agreement is part of a broader trend of tech companies partnering with nuclear energy providers as AI usage surges. Financial terms were not disclosed. The Clinton plant, originally set to close in 2017 due to financial losses, was sustained by Illinois' zero-emission credit program, which expires in 2027, as per the report. The Meta deal, effective from June 2027, will increase the plant's clean energy output by 30 megawatts, preserve 1,100 local jobs, and generate $13.5 million in annual tax revenue, the companies said. 'Securing clean, reliable energy is necessary to continue advancing our AI ambitions,' Meta's head of global energy, Urvi Parekh, said. The report notes that tech giants face dual pressures: increasing energy supplies for AI and data centers while meeting ambitious greenhouse gas reduction goals. Constellation, which owns the shuttered Three Mile Island plant, announced in September a plan to restart it to supply Microsoft's data centers, the AP reports. The Pennsylvania plant was the site of the U.S.' worst commercial nuclear accident in 1979. Amazon and Google have also invested in small nuclear reactors, with Amazon announcing plans two days after Google last fall, and Google investing in three advanced nuclear projects with Elementl Power last month, according to the report. The AP report adds that 25 states passed legislation supporting advanced nuclear energy last year, with over 200 nuclear-friendly bills introduced this year, per the Nuclear Energy Institute. However, the U.S. faces challenges in scaling nuclear production, with no next-generation reactors operating commercially and only two new large reactors built in nearly 50 years, completed significantly over budget and behind schedule in Georgia, the AP states. Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are also investing in solar and wind energy, which produce no greenhouse gas emissions, the AP adds. AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now

Two arrested for conning women through job scams

Chennai: The cyber crime unit of Greater Chennai Police arrested fraudsters involved in deceiving women through online part-time job scams and the "Google reviews" fraud at Washermenpet and Virugambakkam on Tuesday. The North Zone cyber crime unit arrested 39-year-old S Veeraraghavan from Thirunindravur based on a complaint from 27-year-old K Mohanapriya, a resident of New Washermenpet, who lost more than 4.5 lakh after investing in the scam. Mohanapriya was initially promised 200 for each screenshot she sent of YouTube videos shared in a Telegram group created for this purpose. Gradually, she invested more, paying a total of 4.5 lakh in 49 instalments. When she requested to withdraw her money along with the promised profits, she was asked to invest even more, which led her to file a police complaint. Tracing the bank accounts linked to Mohanapriya's payments, police arrested Veeraraghavan. Explaining the modus operandi, a police official said that in these online part-time job scams, the tasks appear simple such as promoting YouTube videos or posting five-star reviews for hotels in other states on Google. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Victims are asked to take screenshots as proof and send them back to the scammers, who then pay a small amount per task. Meta becomes latest big tech company turning to nuclear power for its AI needs

Washington: Meta has cut a 20-year deal to secure nuclear power to help meet surging demand for artificial intelligence and other computing needs at Facebook's parent company. The investment with Meta will also expand the output of a Constellation Energy Illinois nuclear plant. The agreement announced Tuesday is just the latest in a string of tech-nuclear partnerships as the use of AI expands. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. Constellation's Clinton Clean Energy Centre was actually slated to close in 2017 after years of financial losses but was saved by legislation in Illinois establishing a zero-emission credit program to support the plant into 2027. The Meta-Constellation deal takes effect in June of 2027, when the state's taxpayer funded zero-emission credit programme expires. With the arrival of Meta, Clinton's clean energy output will expand by 30 megawatts, preserve 1,100 local jobs and bring in $13.5 million in annual tax revenue, according to the companies. "Securing clean, reliable energy is necessary to continue advancing our AI ambitions," said Urvi Parekh, Meta's head of global energy. Constellation, the owner of the shuttered Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, said in September that it planned to restart the reactor so tech giant Microsoft could secure power to supply its data centres. Three Mile Island, located on the Susquehanna River just outside Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was the site of the nation's worst commercial nuclear power accident in 1979. Also last fall, Amazon said it was investing in small nuclear reactors, two days after a similar announcement by Google. Additionally, Google announced last month that it was investing in three advanced nuclear energy projects with Elementl Power. US states have been positioning themselves to meet the tech industry's power needs as policymakers consider expanding subsidies and gutting regulatory obstacles. Last year, 25 states passed legislation to support advanced nuclear energy, and lawmakers this year have introduced over 200 bills supportive of nuclear energy, according to the trade association Nuclear Energy Institute. Advanced reactor designs from competing firms are filling up the federal government's regulatory pipeline as the industry touts them as a reliable, climate-friendly way to meet electricity demands from tech giants desperate to power their fast-growing artificial intelligence platforms. Amazon, Google and Microsoft also have been investing in solar and wind technologies, which make electricity without producing greenhouse gas emissions.
