Social media regulation: Fahmi ready to hold further discussions with Azalina
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has expressed his readiness to hold further discussions with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, to strengthen the regulation of social media platforms in Malaysia.
Fahmi said the meeting is vital following Azalina's recent proposal to amend existing laws, including requiring parents and guardians to monitor their children's online behaviour and participate in digital safety awareness and education programmes.
He said that these measures will take into account the experience and approaches of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Ministry of Communications in handling various issues related to digital platforms and social media in the country.
'I will be meeting Datuk Seri Azalina to explore possible ways, based on MCMC's and the Ministry's experience dealing with social media platforms, on what we can do,' Fahmi told reporters after the HAWANA 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of BERNAMA Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here today.
Present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also HAWANA 2025 project director.
Elaborating, Fahmi said that the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024, which is set to be enforced soon, will grant MCMC the authority to take action against social media platforms that fail to fulfil their obligations.
'So, we will look at the best ways to assist the Law Minister in the implementation and drafting of the legislation she mentioned,' he added.

MCMC keeping an eye on sale of vape products online, says Fahmi
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said MCMC is expected to prepare a report on online vape sales, which his ministry will then bring to the Cabinet for further discussion. PUTRAJAYA : The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will monitor the sale of vape products online, particularly on social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp, says Fahmi Fadzil. The communications minister said the issue of vape sales and usage, which have been increasingly restricted by several states, was raised at today's Cabinet meeting. 'The health minister will study the matter. I will also instruct MCMC to look into the sale of these products online. 'We have found many such products being sold on Facebook and WhatsApp,' Fahmi, who is the government spokesman, told a press conference after the weekly Cabinet meeting. While a complete ban on vape sales nationwide has been suggested, Fahmi said that would fall under the jurisdiction of the health ministry. 'This has to be referred to the health ministry. But the communications ministry is monitoring the sale of e-cigarettes using social media through MCMC,' he said. Fahmi said MCMC is expected to prepare a report on the matter, which the communications ministry will then bring to the Cabinet for further discussion.

Fahmi: Implementation of Online Safety Act will be clarified later
PUTRAJAYA: A dedicated committee will provide further clarification on the implementation of a proposal to make it mandatory for parents to monitor their children's online activities under the Online Safety Act, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister said that a key step under the enforcement of the legislation was the formation of the Online Safety Committee, which is under the purview of the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. "An online safety committee must be formed. Its role will be crucial in determining what constitutes 'online harm' and how it should be addressed under the law. "As such, we need to allow the process to take its course. We will proceed once everything is finalised," he said during a post-Cabinet meeting press conference on Thursday (June 5). On June 2, Azalina said that the government was currently reviewing several existing legal provisions to introduce clearer responsibilities for parents and guardians in efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect. The proposal also includes mandatory participation in digital safety education programmes. – Bernama
