Emami Q1 profit up 9% despite flat revenue

Time of India5 days ago
Kolkata: FMCG major Emami on Thursday reported a 9% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 164.2 crore for the first quarter this fiscal even as revenue remained flat.
This was mainly due to benign input costs and improved operational efficiency.
Revenue from operations stood at Rs 904 crore in Q1FY26, almost flat compared to Rs 906 crore in Q1FY25. During the period, core domestic business, excluding talc or prickly heat powder (PHP) posted a 6% year-on-year revenue growth, while volume witnessed around 3% year-on-year growth.
The talcum and PHP category, which is highly reliant on peak summer sales, declined by 17% due to adverse weather conditions.

NITI Aayog conducts ‘evaluation study' of MGNREGS amid proposal for 5.23 lakh crore outlay till 2029-30

The NITI Aayog is conducting an 'evaluation study' of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), the Government informed Lok Sabha on Tuesday, even as the Ministry of Rural Development has circulated a proposal seeking approval for the scheme's continuation and an outlay for Rs 5.23 lakh crore till 2029-30, a period that coincides with the next Finance Commission (16th) cycle. The proposal seeks the approval of the Ministry of Finance's Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC). The 'evaluation study' by the Government's premier public policy think tank is crucial for getting EFC approval, said a source. The Ministry of Finance has told all ministries and departments that no centrally sponsored scheme or central sector scheme will be considered for continuation beyond March 31, 2026, without a third-party evaluation. Sources say the EFC approval and appraisal are part of a central exercise to evaluate and approve the Government's schemes for the next Finance Commission cycle. In a written reply to a question asked by Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation member Sudama Prasad, Union Minister of State of Rural Development Kamlesh Paswan informed the House that the Development, Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO), NITI Aayog, has recently taken up an 'evaluation study' of the MGNREGS. The last time the NITI Aayog had conducted an 'evaluation study' of the MGNREGS was in 2019-20. It had also evaluated five other schemes. 'The study focused on the effectiveness, efficiency, impact, and sustainability of these schemes, including the Mahatma Gandhi NREGS, to gauge their overall contribution to the national rural economy,' Paswan said. Paswan also shared details of internal audits and review of the MGNREGS conducted in recent years. 'The Internal Audit Wing (IAW) under the Office of the Chief Controller of Accounts (CCA) has been conducting Risk-Based Internal Audits of MGNREGS implementation in states since FY 2013-14…Risk Based Internal Audits of Mahatma Gandhi NREGS have been conducted in 225 districts of 30 states/UTs since 2013-14,' the Union minister stated. 'Further, Amarjeet Sinha Committee was constituted in 2021 to examine various factors affecting demand for wage employment in the rural sector in different parts of country and to study/analyze the trends of expenditure across States under Mahatma Gandhi NREGS along with reasons for inter-state variations with specific focus on governance issues. The report of the Committee has since been received and some of the recommendations have been identified for appropriate action,' he further said. 'In addition to this, Development, Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO), NITI Aayog also has recently taken up an Evaluation Study of Mahatma Gandhi NREGS,' Paswan added. The MGNREGS is backed by law and therefore the EFC approval is just a formality. The MGNREGS was launched in 200 most backward rural districts of the country in 2006-07, was extended to an additional 130 districts during 2007-08, and to the entire country from the financial year 2008-09. The scheme saw a spike in demand for work during 2020-21, when a record 7.55-crore rural families availed of the scheme in the wake of Covid outbreak. The scheme became a safety net for migrants who returned to their villages during the Covid lockdown in 2020. However, since then the number of families that worked under the MGNREGS has gradually come down—7.25 crore in 2021-22, 6.18 crore in 2022-23, 5.99 crore in 2023-24, and 5.79 crore in 2024-25. The scheme has been suspended in West Bengal since March 2022. Emami bets on new engine of growth, confident about improvement in consumption

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) Emami is working towards building 'new engines of growth" that will define its future as it takes a strategic bet on segments such as health foods, nutrition, pet care, and aloe vera-based fruit juices, according to the latest annual report of the home-grown FMCG major. The company expects its portfolio to be 'much sharper and future-proof" in three to five years, said its Vice Chairman and Managing Director Harsha V Agarwal. Emami, which had gone for a change of its corporate identity with a redesigned logo last week, will also scale up its play in the premium segment 'very aggressively" as the segment is soaring in urban India. However, this will be done 'without losing sight of the real India, the rising middle and lower-middle income consumers where our brands carry weight", said Agarwal, while addressing the company's shareholders. In urban India, there is a growing demand for cleanlabel, eco-conscious products, while in rural markets, the shift from generic to branded personal care is accelerating — fuelled by affordable sachet and pouch formats of premium offerings. Moreover, Emami which has power brands such as BoroPlus, Navratna, Zandu Balm, Kesh King, Fair and Handsome in its fold, is also confident about improvement on the consumption front. 'Looking ahead, we remain confident in the improving consumption outlook," said Agarwal, who is also the current president of the industry body FICCI. 'Add to this a strong forecast for monsoons and income tax benefits for the middle class, and we expect to see a revival in demand in the coming quarters," he said. FMCG companies are facing a slowdown in consumption in the urban market, which contributes significantly to their revenue. Rural, which is mainly a value-based offering market, is growing ahead of the urban market for over last six quarters. However, in the June quarter earnings, listed FMCG makers have reported a sequential improvement in sales from urban markets. While sharing the trends, Agarwal said now consumers are moving away from 'chemical-laden products and embracing Ayurvedic, natural and herbal alternatives, pushing these categories firmly into the mainstream. 'There is also a growing convergence between nutraceuticals and FMCG, as health and wellness become central to everyday consumption. Quick commerce platforms are transforming access and convenience, leading to a rethinking of traditional general trade and modern trade strategies, and sparking innovation in packaging and impulse-driven product formats," he said. This is forcing large players to acquire 'agile, high-growth startups', recognising their speed, relevance and adaptability, which are now 'key to staying ahead". 'We are also working on building new engines of growth — segments that will define tomorrow. Health foods, nutrition, pet care and aloe vera based fruit juices — each one a deliberate strategic bet. In three to five years, our portfolio will be much sharper and future-proof," he said. According to Agarwal, now nearly 45 per cent of its revenues come from high-growth and strategically important areas — modern trade, e-commerce and institutional channels, strategic subsidiaries like The Man Company and Brillare and its growing international business. 'These verticals, alongside our core portfolio, provide both scale and resilience to our growth engine," he said. Emami's focus is not in categories like soaps or toothpaste but operates in 'niche spaces" where household penetration is still low — single-digit, maybe low double-digit at best. 'That is not a weakness. That is headroom. That is opportunity. Most of our brands are still underpenetrated. We are not here to play in overcrowded categories," he said. Emami has established leadership in 'high-margin, high-potential spaces" where its rivals have yet to gain meaningful traction. 'The belief that Emami is overtly reliant on seasonal categories does not reflect the depth of our portfolio," he said, adding, 'while seasonal products like Navratna and Dermicool continue to thrive — and will always be part of our strength. We are equally anchored by robust, nonseasonal brands such as Zandu, Kesh King, Smart And Handsome and 7-Oils- in-One."
