
FIA reduces penalty for swearing after driver backlash
The maximum penalties for drivers swearing has been reduced by 50% while stewards will also be given more discretion on deciding penalties, the governing FIA said on Wednesday.
Competitors in Formula One and rallying have been at loggerheads with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem over a crackdown on bad language during events.
Ben Sulayem said last month that he was considering 'improvements' to rules.
World championship rally drivers had made a breakthrough in April when they reached a compromise to divide events into a controlled zone and an uncontrolled one, with the change now being implemented across all events sanctioned by the FIA.
The FIA said the base maximum penalty has been reduced from 10,000 euros ($11,214) to 5,000 euros while stewards will have the option to fully suspend a penalty if it is the first offence by a driver or a team.
Moreover, stewards will be able to differentiate between 'controlled and non-controlled environments'.
Controlled environments include press conferences while tracks or rally stages are uncontrolled environments.
'As a former rally driver, I know firsthand the range of emotions that are faced during competition,' said Ben Sulayem, who is up for re-election at the end of the year.
'I have led an extensive and collaborative review with contributions from across the seven FIA World Championships, FIA Member Clubs and other motor sports organisations.
'The improvements the FIA has announced today to Appendix B will ensure we continue to promote the best of sportsmanship in motor sport, while also giving stewards effective guidelines to act against individuals who may bring the sport into disrepute.'
Appendix B covers stewards' penalty guidelines, setting out punishments for misconduct including words, deeds or writings that might have caused moral injury to the FIA or motorsport in general.
Mitigating circumstances will also be considered while the abuse of officials will now result in sporting penalties instead of fines.
Formula One Stewards Chair Garry Connelly said the new changes would give stewards guidance to 'differentiate between on- and off-track issues'.
'Drivers are looked up to as role models by young fans and are rightly seen as ambassadors for the wider world of motor sport,' said Ronan Morgan, president of the Drivers' Committee.
'How they act really does matter but it is important to recognise that there is a difference between what is said during a race and in a press conference.'
Last season, Red Bull's triple world champion Max Verstappen was punished for his language in a press conference at the Singapore Grand Prix in September. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was fined 10,000 euros for swearing at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, Williams have made changes to avoid repeating the situation in Miami where Carlos Sainz mistakenly thought Alex Albon had ignored orders not to pass, team boss James Vowles said on Tuesday. Sainz complained after the May 4 Formula One race that he had been made to 'feel stupid' after being informed Albon would hold position behind only for the Thai to then overtake.
'That is not how I go racing. I don't care. I've lost a lot of confidence here, on everything,' the Spaniard, who joined from Ferrari in January, said over the team radio.

F1 to continue with titanium skid blocks after grass fires
Formula One cars will continue to use titanium skid blocks for the rest of the season after testing stainless steel alternatives to reduce the risk of trackside grass fires. Second practice at Suzuka in April was stopped four times by red flags, twice because of trackside fires set by sparks from cars. Practice at last year's Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai was also interrupted by a red flag when a small grass fire broke out at trackside. The governing FIA said on Wednesday that the titanium skid blocks beneath the car, which spark on contact with the asphalt or kerbs, would remain the mandated material but teams would also be required to have stainless steel ones available. It said this was because "they may become mandatory if similar grass fire incidents occur as seen in Suzuka early this year. "Additional testing of stainless steel skid blocks will be conducted at selected events throughout the season to support further evaluation." The decision followed analysis of stainless steel blocks tested at last weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. Reuters

Russell clash should not have happened, says Verstappen
Max Verstappen has conceded that his Spanish Grand Prix clash with Mercedes' George Russell, which left the Formula One champion on the brink of a ban, was wrong and should not have happened. The Red Bull driver made his comments on Instagram a day after the race at the Circuit de Catalunya. Four-times world champion Verstappen was given a 10-second post-race penalty for appearing to drive into Russell after a late safety car period, as well as three penalty points on his super-licence. The race stewards ruled Verstappen had 'suddenly accelerated' before the collision and Russell said it 'felt very deliberate'. The added time dropped him from fifth to 10th while the penalty points took his tally to 11 in a 12-month period. One more in the next two races before the end of June will trigger a race ban. Piastri wins in Spain, Verstappen on brink of a ban
Formula One leader Oscar Piastri won the Spanish Grand Prix in a McLaren one-two with Lando Norris on Sunday while Max Verstappen was left on the brink of a ban after a clash with Mercedes' George Russell. Polesitter Piastri won by 2.471 seconds to go 10 points clear of Norris with his fifth victory in nine races, and McLaren's seventh of the season. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc completed the podium in a race that left the drama to the end with a late safety car deployment. "It's a nice way to bounce back from Monaco. A superb weekend," said Piastri, who finished third last weekend in a race won from pole by Norris. Verstappen, who made four stops in total and ended up fighting on hard tyres against rivals with faster softs, collided with Leclerc and then twice with Russell after the safety car restart with six laps to go. Stewards handed the four-times world champion a 10-second post-race penalty for the second collision with Russell, which appeared deliberate, dropping Verstappen from fifth on the road to 10th. The Dutch driver was also given three penalty points to take his total tally to 11 for the 12 month period. One more before the end of June would incur a one-race ban. Nico Rosberg, Mercedes 2016 world champion and now a pundit for Sky Sports television, said Verstappen should have been black-flagged for what looked to him like intentional retaliation for the earlier contact. Verstappen took the lead again on lap 23 after Piastri pitted, with Norris making his first stop on lap 21 and coming out behind the Red Bull, but that lasted only until Verstappen pitted for a second time on lap 30. He came in for a third stop on lap 47 but Norris pitted the lap after to defend second place. A safety car deployment on lap 55, after Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli beached his Mercedes in the gravel, bunched up the field and triggered a rash of stops. The McLarens came in together for fresh tyres, double-stacking, and resumed ahead of Verstappen who had only hards available to him. "That safety car just came at the wrong time," he said.
