Patient's Face Partially Paralyzed By Unlicensed Dentist Operating Out Of Home: Cops
A New York woman was arrested on Friday and accused of practicing dental work without a license in a dental office found inside her home on Long Island, Suffolk County Police announced.
Yolany Y. Mejia Carranza, 55, is charged with three felony counts of unauthorized practice of a profession after multiple people who sought her out for dental care reported being injured as a result of her practice, Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said at a press conference.
At least one person suffered severe nerve damage that led to partial facial paralysis, he added.
The charges 'basically' mean that Mejia Carranza was 'operating as a dentist without actually being a dentist,' Catalina said.
Catalina told reporters that the woman previously operated another illegal dental business in Huntington Station, but moved the operation to her home in Bay Shore when she thought she was going to get caught, KGNS-TV reported.
A search of her home revealed a 'fully functioning dentist's office,' according to the announcement.
Mejia Carranza's patients were receiving only local anesthesia, not getting the appropriate anesthesia for the 'complex dental procedures she was doing,' Catalina said, according to WABC-TV. Police said they also found antibiotics that had been ordered from overseas.
Police believe there are more victims, Catalina said at the press conference. He said Mejia Carranza targeted the Hispanic community, mostly people who did not have health insurance and 'many' who were undocumented, according to the announcement.
Mejia Carranza pleaded not guilty and is out of jail on supervised release, KGNS-TV reported.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Sheriff's Office released shocking body camera video on Thursday afternoon of an officer-involved shooting in California City that left the 17-year-old suspect and an officer injured. The shooting happened in April and the sheriff's office released just parts of one officer's body worn camera footage on Friday. From the 911 call made by a witness to the arrest of the suspect, the video details what transpired that afternoon. The teen — 17-year-old Annette Garcia — is in custody in Juvenile Hall, awaiting her competency trial. Footage released by KCSO starts with a 911 call made by a witness. 'Okay, there is a girl walking towards Lime right now. Red bandana. She just shot a gun. She just put it in her pocket,' the caller said. 'Let's get in the house before she shoots again. Dude, I don't want to die… she just shot the gun, but she just saw my son. Sh**. She waved at him.' The witness saw Garcia on the afternoon of April 21 as she allegedly made her way around Corwin Street and Lime Avenue in California City, armed with a handgun. There were multiple witnesses. 'Did she shoot at you?' the caller asks a passerby in a white van. 'She shot at the white van,' she then tells the dispatcher. 'He's trying to call you guys too.' The sheriff's office said the van and a package inside were penetrated. Two California City police officers initially responded to the scene. Reports show while one of them — Officer Timothy Stivers — talked to witnesses, the other — Officer Michael Kelakios — looked around for Garcia. He found her nearby on Hickory Avenue, and a gun battle was exchanged. There were 15 total shots fired by Officer Kelakios. Two of them hit Garcia in the right hip and left elbow. Kelakios was shot in the leg and remains on leave while he recovers. 'Where you shot man?' Officer Stivers asks Officer Kelakios, applying a tourniquet for his colleague. 'Right here, bro,' Kelakios answers, adding, 'She's young, she went that way. Hey, watch yourself, she just pulled [the gun] out and shot right at me, bro…wearing like grey pants, grey hoodie, Hispanic female, black hair. Vincent and Stivers chase after the suspect. Vincent detailed to 17 News he had Garcia at gunpoint with his AR-15. Garcia also had additional live ammunition and a knife. 'Show us your hands, now! Put your hands up! All the way up! All the way up!' the officers shouted, as they apprehend Garcia. 'I'm sorry. I was just trying to help my family. They were trying to kill my family,' Garcia responded. As she's handcuffed and arrested, Garcia visibly and audibly struggles, appearing to be in pain. As officers ask her to get on her stomach, Garcia repeats, 'I can't.' At an earlier juvenile court hearing, a prosecutor said Garcia had access to unsecured firearms at her mother's house. Vincent said the mom was arrested last week for a felony — allowing a minor access to firearms. Garcia faces nine total charges, including two counts of attempted murder, assault with a firearm on a peace officer, carrying a loaded firearm in public and being a minor in possession of ammunition. The case was postponed multiple times as Garcia initially recovered at Antelope Valley Hospital. She's now completed a mental competency examination by a psychologist. Those results will be reviewed by a judge to determine if she's competent to stand trial. KCSO said the use of force in this case was determined to be within policy. Bakersfield police are looking for an at-risk 12-year-old who went missing at about 5 p.m. Wednesday in the 1600 block of Third Street. Anson Chavez is described as Hispanic boy standing 5 feet and weighing 105 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes, a black shirt, black pants and black and white shoes. The Bakersfield Police Department reported he is considered at-risk because he has never run away before. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is encouraged to call BPD at 661-327-7111.

An immigrant in Wisconsin has been released on bond after false accusation he threatened Trump
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A man who was falsely accused of threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump and threatened with deportation to Mexico was released Thursday from a Wisconsin jail on bond, three weeks after federal immigration agents arrested him. Ramón Morales Reyes, 54, was accused of a writing a letter threatening Trump in a social media post by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that got widespread national coverage. The post includes Morales Reyes' photo and an excerpt from the letter he purportedly wrote in English. But the claims quickly fell apart as Wisconsin authorities determined that Reyes, who doesn't speak English well or write in the language, was framed. Morales Reyes was a victim in a violent 2023 attack where his bike was stolen. According to authorities, the alleged attacker, Demetric D. Scott, forged the letter to try to clear his case. Morales Reyes was set to be a witness in Scott's July trial for armed robbery and aggravated battery. Morales Reyes was released in the afternoon after paying the $7,500 bond that an immigration judge set on Tuesday. Speaking to WISN-TV, Morales Reyes said he and his lawyer will fight his deportation. 'I believe (the lawyer) knows the history and all of you know what happened," he said. He was later met by relatives and members of the Milwaukee-based immigrant rights group Voces de la Frontera, which has helped work on his case. Christine Neumann-Ortiz, the organization's executive director, said Morales Reyes was 'relieved' and 'very grateful for all of the support he's received.' Judge Carla Espinoza said at the immigration court hearing in Chicago that Morales Reyes was not a threat to the community. Morales Reyes, a married father of three U.S. citizen children, works as a dishwasher in Milwaukee. He was arrested by immigration agents last month after dropping a child off at school. He immigrated from Mexico in the 1980s and doesn't have legal permission to be in the U.S. This year, he applied for a U visa, which is for people in the country illegally who are victims of serious crimes. Getting such a visa can take years. Homeland Security issued a statement to reporters last week saying that although Morales Reyes was no longer considered a threat to Trump, federal attorneys would still pursue an immigration case. The government alleges that Morales Reyes reentered the U.S. numerous times without a visa. Morales Reyes had been held in the Dodge Detention Center in Juneau, about 70 miles (113 kilometers) north of Milwaukee. He was released after the federal government did not appeal the setting of his bond. Noem's social media post blaming Morales Reyes for an assassination attempt, which was circulated by Trump supporters, remains online. ___ Tareen reported from Chicago.
