Unsolved crimes cast long shadow over pilgrimage centre
At a press conference, activist K. Dinesh Ganiga alleged that between 1970 and 2025, several high-profile cases in and around Dharmasthala remain unresolved. He cited the 1973 rape and murder of SDM College student Padmalatha, the 1986 petrol-burning murder of teacher Vedavalli, and the 2012 killings of elephant caretaker Narayana and his wife Yamuna. He also referred to the rape and murder of Soujanya in October 2012, a case that sparked statewide outrage.
Ganiga further highlighted discrepancies between official police records and local panchayat reports, noting that from 2002 to 2012 alone, 452 unnatural deaths were recorded in Dharmasthala and Ujire. 'Despite the seriousness of these cases, no suspects have been convicted. The failure of the police has eroded public trust,' he said.He accused political leaders of selectively raising the issue for religious or electoral gain while remaining silent during earlier atrocities.Civil society groups have now demanded that four key cases be handed over to a Special Investigation Team (SIT). To press for this, activists announced a statewide mobilisation under the banner 'Ujire Chalo' on August 24, calling for transparency, justice for victims, and accountability from the government.

Hemachandran murder: one more suspect nabbed from Wayanad
The special investigation team (SIT) constituted by the Kozhikode City police has arrested one more person who reportedly had direct involvement in the alleged abduction and murder of Hemachandran, a Kozhikode-based businessman. Melbin Mathew, the fifth accused in the incident, was nabbed on Sunday (August 17) after the police collected strong evidence establishing his close contact with the other four partners in the alleged crime. Four Wayanad natives — P.V. Noushad, 33, Jyothish Kumar, 32, and B.S. Ajesh, 27 and V.V. Vysakh, 28 — had already been arrested in connection with the incident. Police sources said that Melbin was aware of the alleged conspiracy behind the abduction and murder of the 52-year-old following some financial deals. They said he was present in the car, which was used for the alleged abduction. It was on June 28 that the police cracked the murder case, which was initially registered as a case of man missing at the Kozhikode Medical College police station. The SIT zeroed in on the five suspects after a 16-month-long probe with the support of the Kozhikode City cyber cell and crime squad. Hemachandran, a Wayanad native, had temporarily settled at Mayanad in Kozhikode for his private chit fund business. The SIT found that he was abducted from Kozhikode city on March 20, 2024, and later murdered in Wayanad following some financial disputes. The successful recovery of the secretly buried body from the Cherambadi forest in Tamil Nadu was a major breakthrough in the investigation.

BJP seeks arrest of activist Mahesh Shetty Timarodi
Udupi district unit of the BJP said on Sunday that activist Mahesh Shetty Timarodi should be arrested, alleging that he has defamed the Dharmasthala temple and its administrators by using the SIT probe into the alleged burial of bodies in Dharmasthala village more than a decade ago. President of the BJP district unit, Kutyar Naveen Shetty, said in a statement that the Manjunatha temple at Dharmasthala is revered by many Hindus. 'He [Mr. Timarodi] is spoiling the health of society by making false allegations,' Mr. Shetty alleged. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar seems to be sailing in two boats on the issue of Dharmasthala burials case, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Sunday. 'On the one hand, Mr. Shivakumar suspects conspiracy behind the whole issue, while on the other hand, he blames the BJP for the protest against digging in Dharmasthala. This ambivalence is not easily understood,' he told reporters in Varur near Hubballi. He was responding to Mr. Shivakumar's statement on the BJP organising protests against SIT investigation. He has made a comment saying that Dharmasthala is not the BJP's private property. 'What does he mean by this? Should we keep quiet when Hindu holy places are under attack?' he said. He said that he strongly suspected that there is a conspiracy to take over the Dharmasthala temple by the State government. 'There is reason to believe that there is such a conspiracy. That is because the Congress government has tried to take over the wealth of Hindu temples in the past,' he said. The Deputy Chief Minister should clarify what he means by his statement. 'Has any BJP leader claimed that Dharmasthala is BJP's private property?' he asked. The State government has formed the SIT on the statement of an anonymous man. Will it order a SIT probe if someone says there has been a spate of murders in a dargah?' he asked. He sought action against vested interests who are making 'irresponsible statement' about Dharmasthala. Sri Gunadharanandi Maharaj, seer of the Jain math in Varur, said that the SIT probe will uncover the truth and expose the lies being spread about Dharmasthala. He said that the government should take action against those who are spreading slander against the holy place.
