Nirmal Krishna deposit fraud
died and four people died by suicide after failing to find money for the treatment of various illnesses and other personal needs in the last eight years, Nirmal Krishna Nikshepa Samrakshaka Samithi (NKNSS) informed TOI on Tuesday.
The first suicide was in 2017, the year the multi-crore fraud came to light, as the victim Venugopal, 48, of Udiyankulangara, failed to get his deposit of Rs 15 lakh for the marriage of his daughter. Others died in the years later due to various illnesses, including cancer. Some people died while undergoing treatment. Some depositors visited the house of the accused frequently for the money but in vain, said NKNSS.
Girikumar, 66, of Neyyattinkara and his wife Leena, 60, deposited Rs 20 lakh in 2017. The couple received the interest on time only for five months and later the firm was shut down due to financial issues.
"I did not get money for my daughter's marriage despite begging. I suffered a stroke and a huge amount is needed for treatment. Now we are debt-ridden as the officials of the bank, from where we took a loan, warned us of recovery proceedings as we could not repay it. We are on the verge of committing suicide if our money is not given back," said Ajayakumar, a depositor.
Over 13,000 depositors in Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari districts were allegedly defrauded of over Rs 1,000 crore by the accused.

Exalogic case: CM Pinarayi Vijayan files affidavit in Kerala high court opposing CBI probe
Kochi: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has filed a counter-affidavit before high court opposing the public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a CBI probe into the controversial Exalogic-CMRL transaction, terming it a 'politically instigated litigation'. In his affidavit, he denied all allegations, including the claim that Exalogic Solutions, a now-defunct company owned by his daughter T Veena, is his 'benami company,' and that he received illegal gratification from CMRL. The PIL filed by senior journalist M R Ajayan alleged that Exalogic received Rs 1.72 crore from Cochin Minerals and Rutile Ltd (CMRL) as illegal gratification. He also sought an investigation into the alleged political nexus involving the CM and the companies concerned. During the last hearing, the court had directed the respondents, including the CM, to file their counter-affidavits. The matter is posted for further consideration on June 17. In his 19-page affidavit, Vijayan submitted that the petitioner had failed to produce any material to substantiate the allegations, terming the PIL a "textbook case of a fishing expedition", an attempt to prompt a roving inquiry without foundational facts. He contended that the prayer for a CBI probe was devoid of genuine public interest and was instead driven by personal and political motives, targeting him and his daughter based on a single private commercial arrangement. Vijayan stated that, as per his understanding, Exalogic was engaged to provide software and marketing consultancy services to CMRL under a legitimate agreement, and that all transactions were duly accounted for through banking channels. He disclaimed any knowledge of or involvement in his daughter's business affairs, stating that she acted independently. He also denied the allegation that he was the 'kingpin' in the transfer of Kovalam Palace to a private businessman, asserting that he had exercised no undue influence in the matter. He pointed out that he assumed office well after the transfer took place. Further, he submitted that the petitioner had neither alleged any bias or collusion on the part of the vigilance and anti-corruption bureau (VACB) nor challenged the decision of the vigilance court, which declined to direct registration of an FIR in the case. Vijayan also contended that the petitioner had failed to implead the state govt as a respondent and that entertaining a petition in the absence of any evidence of bias or inaction would undermine the constitutional framework of federalism. Additionally, he submitted that an investigation by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) is already in progress, and therefore, parallel investigations by other agencies into the same allegation cannot be undertaken.

Crimes by ‘outsiders' trigger protests in Uttarakhand, locals demand stringent checks
Dehradun: A series of violent crimes involving individuals from outside Uttarakhand — including the recent murder of a 25-year-old local man by a poclain machine operator — have led to widespread anger among residents and prompted authorities to tighten background checks. The incidents occurred over the past week in different parts of the state, including Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal. The poclain operator, accused of murdering the youth in Pauri Garhwal, remained absconding. In another case, Dehradun police on Saturday arrested three men from Haryana and Delhi for allegedly attacking a car belonging to a Dehradun-based merchant navy officer after his vehicle overtook theirs on a busy road on May 30. Meanwhile, seven men from Punjab were arrested for allegedly assaulting locals with swords in Srinagar, Pauri Garhwal, after being asked not to create a disturbance. Residents of Dehradun and surrounding areas blamed inadequate background checks for the rising violence. "What is happening in the past few days in the city and other parts of the state is completely unacceptable. Encroachments along Bindal river to be cleared by June 30: U'khand govt to HC
Dehradun: Uttarakhand govt on Monday informed the high court that all encroachments along the Bindal river in Dehradun will be removed by June 30, with two illegal structures already cleared by the administration during initial action. The court, hearing three public interest litigations related to threats to rivers, water streams, and the environment, listed the matter for further hearing after four weeks. A division bench of Chief Justice G Narendar and Justice Alok Mahra held a joint hearing on three PILs filed by Dehradun residents Ajay Narayan Sharma, Renu Pal, and Urmila Thapar. The petitions raised concerns over environmental degradation due to unauthorised construction on submerged land in Sahastradhara and encroachments on natural drains and slopes in Rishikesh, including the Bindal and Rispana rivers. The court had earlier ordered the state govt to remove encroachments from rivers, streams and water channels, and to install CCTV cameras at these sites, directing that these areas be managed like accident-prone zones on roadways. The court also asked the director general of police to ensure SHOs of relevant areas register cases against encroachers and submit reports. The bench instructed the secretary of urban development to issue a public message cautioning citizens against encroachments, dumping of debris, and illegal mining in rivers and streams ahead of the monsoon season to prevent accidents. "This warning must go out urgently before the rains," the court said. Environmental groups have long pointed out that unchecked settlement and construction along the Bindal and Rispana riverbanks have severely reduced the rivers' natural flow and polluted them into near-sewage channels. A 2022 report found that the average width of the Rispana had shrunk from 319 metres in 1968 to just 68 metres. The National Green Tribunal had earlier fined local officials Rs 1 lakh each, citing "administrative negligence" in failing to prevent encroachments along water bodies. In April, the high court reinforced orders for installing CCTV and managing river zones with the same urgency as road accident-prone areas. Meanwhile, activists associated with Chetna Andolan said that under the guise of complying with the court's orders, poor residents were being evicted and rendered homeless. "No action is being taken against hotels and restaurants built on riverbanks, but poor families are being targeted first," one activist said. On May 30, dozens of daily wage workers and activists protested elevated road projects and demolitions, accusing the govt of sparing commercial buildings while evicting vulnerable households. In response, the Dehradun district administration asked municipal bodies to identify affected families for rehabilitation under schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
