May 11 South Africa (Turffontein) form analysis

New Paper10-05-2025
Race 1 (1,160m)
Both (1) CHARMING CHEETAH and (3) TIN PAN ALLEY confirmed the promise of debut victories by acquitting themselves well in subsequent features, so should run well.
Fellow first-start scorer (4) ZALATORIS could be anything after scoring a debut win, so is not to be underestimated.
Last-start winner (2) RED PENNY and debutant (8) BLUSHING BLOOM complete the shortlist.
Race 2 (1,160m)
Recent runners-up (6) LAVA COUNTY and (8) SOHO HEARTTHROB need not improve much to fight for victory. But preference is for the latter, who ought to have come on appreciably from the experience of his promising debut.
Well-related newcomers (5) XENOPHON and (7) PALACE ATTACK are worth a market check.
(1) MIZZEN SWORD and (3) OLD FASHIONED have the form and experience to trouble their younger rivals.
Race 3 (1,800m)
(1) PARISIAN WALKWAY had excuses for a disappointing last start and, on the strength of his earlier form, is worth another chance under a 4kg claimer.
Recent hat-trick scorer (2) TAMARISK TREE is performing at the top of his game and should remain competitive off a career-high mark under a handy galloping weight.
(3) NAVAJO NATION and (4) SILENT WAR will not be far off the mark, while stablemates (6) MISS SCALETTA and (7) KEY ELEMENT also have earning potential.
Race 4 (1,600m)
(1) THE ULTIMATE KING was not winning out of turn on his reappearance as a gelding last month. He looks good value to follow up on his handicap debut, with further improvement expected.
Hat-trick seeking (3) PRETTY ANALIA, consistent (5) FUTUREWOLFF and rejuvenated (7) COPPOLA seem the most likely dangers.
Race 5 (1,400m)
High-class (1) MAIN DEFENDER has only once been beaten in six starts over this distance. He is weighted to win, so is almost impossible to oppose.
A big threat could be posed by (5) TRUTH, Grade 1 winner (2) PURPLE PITCHER and (6) WHITE PEARL, though.
(3) ATTICUS FINCH and (4) LEGEND OF ARTHUR are most effective over further.
Race 6 (1,400m)
(1) ROYAL FORCE showed his class and well-being by winning over track and trip last time. A six-point penalty for that victory is unlikely to halt his progress.
Fellow last-start winners (6) DANCE KING and filly (8) MOUNTAIN HIGH also remain competitive for top honours under resultant penalties.
Recently gelded (2) IMMEDIATE EDGE, consistent (3) POTBERRIE and returning (5) KEY NEWS appeal most of the remaining opponents.
Race 7 (1,000m)
Top-weight (1) DREAMLAND bounced back to form last time and will be competitive with a repeat of that performance.
(4) COSMIC STAR and stable companion (6) MOUNT PINATUBO fit a similar profile and are distance-suited.
Consistent (2) QUANTUM THEORY and versatile last-start winner (8) BOB'S YOUR UNCLE are others with genuine each-way chances.
Race 8 (1,000m)
Lightly raced (6) VIRGIN RIVER is ideally distance-suited and probably better than rated, so it could pay to side with her.
Class-dropper (2) NIGHT VIGIL concedes 5.5kg to her older rival but can still overcome that handicap.
(3) SIMPLY MAJESTIC and stable companion (4) COSMIC QUEEN are above-average three-year-old fillies with the form and experience to trouble the leading prospects.

South Africa have planning for next World Cup as top priority

JOHANNESBURG - Top ranked South Africa will be seeking to keep up their winning ways in the Rugby Championship, but the six matches against Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina over the next three months will also likely be used for experimentation. Coach Rassie Erasmus has made no secret of his desire to freshen up his ageing squad and keep the Springboks on course for a third successive World Cup title, when the next tournament is hosted in 2027. He has suggested that he might prioritise handing vital international experience to a new crop of emerging players ahead of the outcome of the Rugby Championship tests, although given his relentless competitive streak, this is only likely to be in extreme circumstances. There is guaranteed to be more of the out-of-the-box thinking over the next few months that has turned Erasmus into a figure who deeply divides opinion. Some see his tactical manipulations as innovation, others as borderline cheating, but Erasmus' Machiavellian moves are changing some aspects of rugby. None more so than his loading of the replacement bench with forwards to bring on more muscle at vital junctures of the game. The uneven split between substitute forwards and backs has been quickly adopted by other test teams. More recently, South Africa used the tactic of lifting a jumper, usually reserved for line outs, in open play to force a maul and use their power to push their way over the opponent's goalline and score a try. It garnered both applause and derision but is not stopping Erasmus. 'I think one must be constantly thinking of new plans because if you keep doing the same old stuff, you'll never get any advantage,' Erasmus said ahead of this weekend's kick-off of the southern hemisphere tournament. But priority for the Boks is ensuring a potent squad for the World Cup in two years. The majority of the World Cup winners from 2023 are over 30, and Erasmus is conscious that many might be past their peak in 2027. 'It's not easy to predict who is going to be available, and that's why we've been working with an expanded squad of 45 players,' he explained. Recent tests against Italy and Georgia saw several new caps. 'We won't be throwing the old guys away, but we need to give as many chances as we can to up-and-coming talent,' he added. REUTERS

Taylor Swift's boyfriend Travis Kelce namedrops 'scorching hot' Singapore

It has been more than a year since American football star Travis Kelce was in Singapore to attend his girlfriend Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour concerts at the National Stadium in March 2024, but the nation's heat and humidity is still on his mind. In a cover story interview with GQ for the US magazine's September issue, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end praised the American pop superstar for having the endurance and stamina of an athlete. "She may not think of herself as an athlete, but I've seen what she goes through. I've seen the amount of work that she puts on her body, and it's mind-blowing," he said. He shared the tough conditions Swift, 35, had to endure during her global The Eras Tour, comprising 149 sell-out concerts that ran from March 17, 2023, to Dec 8, 2024. Kelce, 35, zeroed in on her six shows in Singapore. Not only did she brave the heat generated by electronic equipment beneath the massive stage floor, but she also had to put up with the punishing weather. "The Eras Tour floor is literally a football field-sized computer. You take that into Singapore, where it is scorching hot, and all of a sudden you're feeling the fumes from the computer and you're feeling the fumes from the sun, and you're doing a show for three hours with a lot of energy, bringing it every single song," he said. "That is arguably more exhausting than how much I put in on a Sunday, and she's doing it three, four, five days in a row." This is not the first time Kelce has commented on Singapore's heat. In the March 13, 2024, episode of Kelce and his brother Jason's New Heights podcast, Kelce gave a glowing review of his visit between March 7 and 9, calling the city-state high-tech and futuristic, exceedingly well-planned-out and more interesting to him than Sydney, Australia, where he also travelled to for The Eras Tour. He also made nods to the diverse cuisine and the 38 deg C temperatures. In the same interview, Kelce gushed about the couple's relationship and how he is the "happiest guy in the world" since they started dating in 2023. He said they could relate to each other, revealing how they have a lot in common, such as entertaining sold-out stadiums. "I hadn't experienced somebody in the same shoes as me, having a partner who understands the scrutiny, understands the ups and downs of being in front of millions. That was very relatable, seeing how exhausted she would get after shows." He also stressed that their romance is not a publicity stunt. "Whenever I'm with her, it feels like we're just regular people. We're just two people who are in love," Kelce said, adding that their relationship happened very organically. Meanwhile, the celebrity couple look set to break records together in the days to come. A teaser clip from Swift's upcoming highly anticipated guest-starring episode of New Heights, featuring the Grammy-winning singer's surprise reveal of her new 12th studio album The Life Of A Showgirl, was posted on Aug 12. It became her most-viewed Instagram reel ever, garnering more than 130 million views in less than 24 hours. It has since received over 168 million views and 5.1 million "likes". The full podcast episode will be released on Aug 13, marking Swift's debut podcast interview and their inaugural joint interview appearance.

All Blacks compared to Argentina's World Cup winning football team

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox CORDOBA, Argentina - Argentina loose forward Marcos Kremer reckons Saturday's opponents New Zealand are rugby's equivalent of his country's World Cup-winning soccer team. Kremer is due to return to the line-up after a injury layoff when they open this year's Rugby Championship in Cordoba at the weekend against the All Blacks, a team he has long admired. "What I admire about the All Blacks is their culture, their passion for rugby. So, as Argentines, even if you're in better form than them, you'll always respect them because they're the All Blacks. It's like what any football team must go through with Argentina," he told reporters in the build-up to the test at the Estadio Mario Kempes. "It's going to be a great match. We're at home, with our people, in Córdoba, a place where rugby is a thing. "I think right now it's going to come down to the final minutes with a small difference between the teams, depending on how things go and how each team's mindset and mentality work during the week. That's going to be the key." Kremer missed Argentina's June tests against England and Uruguay, having struggled with his knee over the last year. "Playing in this jersey after not having played for two or three months, I don't think there's going to be much change," he said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. However, injury has ruled out Emilino Boffelli, Thomas Gallo and Benjamin Grondona. "We have to go all out, put those nerves aside, and focus on playing rugby, which we know how to do. We have what it takes, we have the players," Kremer added. "We know that if the forwards are performing well, we have players at the back that will allow us to fly a little bit more, so we'll see on Saturday. "In the meantime, we have to stay calm. There's work to do, so we have to fine-tune the details and be ready for the weekend," he said. REUTERS
