RM20mil in sukuk funds for highway project possibly used for gambling

MACC chief Azam Baki said investigators are still waiting to question the corporate figure as he is being treated for an undisclosed illness at a private hospital.
PETALING JAYA : About RM20 million in sukuk funds linked to a Klang Valley highway project is believed to have been misappropriated and used for gambling activities, says the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said investigations into a corporate figure with a 'Tan Sri' title found that several investments made by the concessionaire involved 'illegal activities'.
Azam said investigators are tracing other assets, including some located overseas, which they believe were acquired using misappropriated sukuk funds.
'For now, 45 witnesses have given their statements. We are still waiting to record the Tan Sri's statement. We've been informed that he is receiving treatment (for an undisclosed illness) at a private hospital,' he said, according to Berita Harian.
The sukuk funds were allegedly transferred to multiple entities, including proxy companies and the personal account of the Tan Sri's wife, and used to acquire assets such as real estate, luxury vehicles and goods, as well as to fund gambling activities.
MACC has frozen 14 individual bank accounts totalling RM4.5 million, and eight company accounts amounting to RM33 million.
Also confiscated were luxury vehicles (costing RM7.65 million), designer handbags (worth RM3 million), jewellery (valued at RM6 million), high-end watches (estimated to cost RM7 million) and properties valued at RM24.5 million.
MACC had also discovered a storage facility with up to 300 bottles of premium alcoholic drinks after raiding one luxury condominium unit. The facility was said to have been specially built at the bottom floor of the condo unit.
It also found several horses worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit which were allegedly bought using the misappropriated sukuk funds.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said police also seized a mobile phone from one of the two PSM members for investigation purposes. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police are finalising their investigation into a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender programme planned by PSM's youth wing after recording statements from two members yesterday. Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the individuals were questioned from 3.10pm to 4.30pm, and that a Huawei mobile phone and a SIM card were seized from one of them. 'A total of 38 questions were posed to them. However, both opted to respond in court,' Berita Harian quoted him as saying. The investigation is being conducted under Section 298A and Section 505(c) of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain previously said that the number of reports received on the event had risen from 21 to 188. Last week, religious affairs minister Na'im Mokhtar urged PSM to cancel its plans for the workshop, themed 'Pride Care: Queer Stories & Sexual Health Awareness'. He said the organisation of such a programme, even if held behind closed doors, clearly challenged societal norms and the religious values of the majority.

8 from UMT claim trial to injuring fellow student

In December, police arrested 12 Universiti Malaysia Terengganu students in connection with an assault on a fellow student. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Eight students from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) pleaded not guilty at the Kuala Terengganu magistrates' court today to severely injuring a fellow student last year. Berita Harian reported that the students, aged 21 to 23, made their pleas after the charges against them were read before magistrate Iffah Nabihah Ishak. They were charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt to the 21-year-old victim in a dormitory on the UMT campus between 1.30am and 5am on Dec 15, 2024. The charges were made under Section 325 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code, which provide for up to seven years' imprisonment and a fine upon conviction. The court set July 6 for re-mention of the case and allowed bail of RM5,000 for all eight accused. The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutors Azizan Abdullah, Nur Nabihah Hanin Ayim, and Nur Aisyah Mohamad, while the accused were represented by a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation. In December, police arrested 12 UMT students in connection with an assault on a fellow student. Acting Kuala Terengganu police chief Wan Zaki Wan Ismail said the arrests followed a report from a man claiming that his 20-year-old son had been assaulted in the university's dormitory. 'The victim informed his father of the assault by phone at 10.50pm on Dec 15 while the complainant was at home in Melaka. 'The victim also sent several photos showing injuries to various parts of his body,' he said. The victim's father took his son to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for treatment, where the attending medical officer confirmed bruises and internal injuries from blunt force trauma to the victim's arms, waist, chest, abdomen, and leg.

Bargain hunters lift Bursa higher in early trade

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia opened higher today on mild bargain hunting amid the mixed overnight performance on Wall Street, analysts said. At 9.05am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was 1.50 points firmer at 1,509.47, compared with Wednesday's close of 1,507.97. The benchmark index opened 2.73 points higher at 1,510.70. The broader market saw a slight lead from positive gainers, with 106 leading decliners at 100, while 222 counters were unchanged, 1,928 untraded, and 20 suspended. Turnover stood at 82.87 million units, valued at RM52.36 million. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said the mixed Wall Street was due to the US private sector hiring data, which hit its lowest level in two years, on concerns over prevailing uncertainty, weighing on the US economy. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index (HSI) maintained its uptrend to a near two-month high, as traders remained confident that a negotiation between China and the US would take place anytime soon. Back home, Thong said the FBM KLCI on Wednesday finally reversed its recent downtrend to close in positive territory, attributed to last-minute bargain hunting. Overall, he noted that trading activities remained muted, as indicated by the low daily volume of 2.4 billion shares. 'We noticed there has been a spate of downgrades on the FBM KLCI target this year, given the prevailing trade uncertainty. 'Nonetheless, we envisage bargain-hunting activities to prevail, hence, expect the index to trend within the 1,505-1,515 range today,' Thong added. Among the heavyweights, Press Metal Aluminium added 10 sen to RM5.00, MR DIY rose 3.0 sen to RM1.58, YTL Power International increased 5.0 sen to RM3.34, Nestle bagged 64 sen to RM79.00, and Sime Darby ticked up 1.0 sen to RM1.71.
