No reports of structures lost in Wesley Ridge fire but no timeline for people to return home

There have been no reports of any structures lost due to the Wesley Ridge wildfire burning on Vancouver Island. However, hundreds of people remain out of their homes and hundreds more are ready to leave at a moment's notice. The Wesley Ridge wildfire, burning north of Cameron Lake, remains 511 hectares in size as of Tuesday afternoon. There are currently 387 homes on evacuation order, including Qualicum Falls Provincial Park and day use area and two campgrounds. Late on Monday, the Regional District of Nanaimo added 15 homes in the Spider Lake area to be added to the evacuation alert notice, which brings that total up to 250. Those residents must be able to leave their homes on short notice. Madison Dahl with the BC Wildfire Service said there are 244 firefighting personnel responding to the blaze, with eight pieces of heavy equipment and seven helicopters. And there was no growth in the northeast corner in the area of the Little Qualicum River Village and park community.' Dahl said crews continue to prioritize protecting homes, critical infrastructure and keeping Highway 4, which connects Port Alberni and the coastal communities, open. 'This wildfire is burning in rugged and challenging terrain,' Dahl said. 'The nature of wildland firefighting is filled with inherent risk, and we are committed to building a culture of safety within the BC Wildfire Service to reduce risk where possible and keep firefighters safe.' 2:02 Wesley Ridge wildfire continues to burn out of control The timeline for residents to return home remains unknown at this time. Story continues below advertisement 'It is our intention to facilitate safe return home for all evacuees,' Dahl said. 'We are working with the local authorities, the Regional District of Nanaimo, to ensure that it is safe, to allow people to go home to their residences. I know that being evacuated during a wildfire is a very scary experience, and you're putting your trust and faith in us. 'So please have patience and allow us to make sure that it's safe before we can make any recommendations.'

A shipwreck off Yemen has killed 56 migrants and left 132 missing, UN says in revised figures

This is a locator map for Yemen with its capital, Sanaa. (AP Photo) CAIRO — A boat carrying African migrants that capsized over the weekend off the coast of war-torn Yemen killed 56 and left 132 missing, the UN immigration agency said Tuesday, revising casualty figures released earlier. It is the latest in a series of shipwrecks off Yemen that killed hundreds trying to reach wealthy Arab Gulf countries in the hope of a better life. The vessel had 200 people on board when it sank early Sunday off the coastal town of Shuqrah in Yemen's southern province of Abyan, the International Organization for Migration said in a statement. Authorities recovered 56 bodies, including 14 women, while 12 men were rescued as of Tuesday morning, the agency said. An operation to find those missing is underway, Abyan security directorate said late Monday, adding that the body of the boat captain, a Yemeni citizen, was recovered among 14 others off Zinjibar, the provincial capital. 'This heartbreaking incident highlights the urgent need to address the dangers of irregular migration along the Eastern Route,' the IOM said. Initially, Abdusattor Esoev, IOM chief in Yemen, said on Sunday the boat carried 154 Ethiopian migrants, with 68 killed and 74 missing. In its Tuesday statement, IOM said more than 350 migrants died or went missing in shipwrecks so far this year along the Eastern Route, which migrants from the Horn of Africa use to reach Yemen. The actual figure is likely to be significantly higher, it said. Yemen has been a major transit point for African migrants fleeing conflicts and poverty. Smugglers often take them on dangerous, overcrowded boats across the Red Sea or the Gulf of Aden. Tens of thousands of migrants arrive in Yemen every year, despite being one of the poorest Arab countries and mired in a civil war for more than a decade. More than 60,000 migrants arrived there in 2024, according to the IOM. Samy Magdy, The Associated Press
