New Hearts signing lifts lid on second Tynecastle chance and why he turned down move 4 years ago

Tynecastle already feels like home for the 29-year-old, who has settled in seamlessly ahead of the new season. Maybe it was just always meant to be that he would end up at Hearts. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad After all, he's been a transfer target for the Jambos on more than one occasion. Robbie Neilson tried to bring him to Gorgie four years ago and he's persistently been linked with a transfer. Finally he had the maroon and white scarf above his head last month when a season-long loan with Oxford United was brokered. It was his former manager at Kilmarnock in Derek McInnes who got the move over the line. The duo teamed up well at Rugby Park and Findlay was keen to follow him east to Hearts. Football has been enjoyable for the centre-half under the gaffer. That hasn't always been the case after he ended his first spell at Killie to join Philadelphia Union over in the States four years ago. (Photo by Craig Williamson / SNS Group) | SNS Group 'I'll be the first to admit, when I had the option to leave Oxford on a loan to go back to Kilmarnock, I didn't have many options, I've been totally honest with you,' said Findlay. 'When Derek McInnes came in for me at Kilmarnock, he was a manager that obviously I respected greatly, it was a club that meant a lot to me. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It worked at the time, and I think for him to get me from where I was two years previous to where I was at the end of his tenure at Kilmarnock, I think it would be an absolute madness for me not to want to continue that working relationship. 'I think he's a manager that knows what my skill set is, he knows how to get out of me, and as I said, when I got the chance to learn off him again, it was something I just generally couldn't knock down. 'Not only that, to then come to a club with the stature of Hearts. I had maybe the chance a few years before I moved to America, but now that I'm here and I see what the club's all about, I'm delighted to get another bite of the cherry. And to be able to do it with an extra four or five years experience behind me, I think not only me, but the club's going to benefit from that.' (Photo by Ross MacDonald / SNS Group) | SNS Group Findlay is asked to expand on what could have been in 2021. 'Yeah, I don't think it was any secret, I think it was Robbie Neilson who was the manager, I was very, very close to going there,' he continued. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'But I think the opportunity that I got in America was something at the time I couldn't knock back. It was a massive, massive opportunity which maybe just didn't work out football-wise the way that I did, but it's not something I regret. It's something that I might have never got the chance to do again, definitely wouldn't have got the chance to do again, it's something I had to explore at the time. 'But as I said, there's always that little gnawing feeling in the back of your head of what could have happened if I'd went elsewhere. So to be able to come here, I think a better player to what I was back then, with a manager who fully knows what I'm about, it can only be a positive for me.' Such has been Findlay's form in Scotland, there are a few left puzzled why Oxford have not granted him more chances. His contract expires next summer and there is next to no chance of a return. Findlay is incredibly candid on it all. 'It's a bit of a strange situation that I've got with Oxford,' he explained. 'I would first admit the year that I was down there I didn't set the heather alight. I was really disappointed, I maybe wasn't in the right place mentally and physically that I wanted to be when I was at Oxford, but these things happen, football players take dips at certain times. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I thought they'd maybe made their mind up that that just wasn't the idea for them, I can't blame them because I didn't produce the way I did. But at the same time when you've got a manager who wants you as much as the gaffer here did, I think both clubs were happy to get something done in the meantime. 'I can't worry about what other clubs are wanting, I just only worry about the club where I am, and that's Hearts, and I just really want to have a good year for Hearts now.' (Photo by Rob Casey / SNS Group) | SNS Group The Jambos - and McInnes - are happy to have him. He's been part of a team that won all four Premier Sports Cup group games comfortably ahead of the Premiership opener on Monday night at home to Aberdeen. Excitement is building in Gorgie after last season's underwhelming campaign. 'I don't think you realise how big a club Hearts is until you're involved in it,' said Findlay. 'Obviously you come to Tynecastle once or twice a season, you know they're a big side. But until you come here and you see how passionate the fans are. And not only that, just the demand for success at a club like Hearts is something that I'm really happy to be a part of. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'When the manager spoke to me, we were both wanting to come here because we both knew what success looked like at Hearts. It's something that we both aligned ourselves with. So we're going to have to back it up and make sure we put in the performances to reach the ambitions.

Bayern's Pavlovic suffers eye socket fracture

Aug 3 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering an eye socket fracture in training, the German club said. The 21-year-old Germany international had undergone successful surgery, the club said in a statement on Saturday without providing a timeline on his return. Bayern are already without playmaker Jamal Musiala, who sustained a fibula fracture with a broken and dislocated ankle at the Club World Cup last month, while left back Alphonso Davies is out due to an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tear. Bayern play VfB Stuttgart in the German Super Cup final on August 16 before beginning their Bundesliga title defence against RB Leipzig at home six days later.

Viktoria Plzen lowdown ahead of Rangers Champions League showdown as insider lifts lid on 'stubborn old fox'

Former Hearts assistant Frankir McAvoy dug out his notebook from last August to go through Plzen's dangermen. The wily old fox of Plzen has already fought off one young cub on Scottish soil. ‌ Viktoria boss Miroslav Koubek and his side were too cunning for Hearts and Steven Naismith over two Europa League qualifying legs last season. ‌ Now the 73-year-old is preparing for another battle with a manager almost half his age in this week's Champions League qualifying clash against Rangers. ‌ And former Jambos assistant Frankie McAvoy is confident this time Russell Martin and Rangers can leave the veteran Czech and his players feeding off Euro scraps. McAvoy knows Hearts missed an opportunity 12 months ago when they lost 1-0 to a 96th minute Daniel Oyegoke own goal in Pilsen before failing to perform as they went down 1-0 in the second leg at Tynecastle. The main players from that Viktoria side again came to the fore as they fought back from two goals behind to dump Servette on Wednesday night and set up the two-leg showdown with Rangers. ‌ Ahead of Tuesday's clash at Ibrox, McAvoy dug out his notebook from last August to give MailSport an insight into the men who made the Czechs tick including midfielder Pavel Sulc who could yet seal a €10m move to Lyon before facing Gers. But according to the former Preston North End boss, the man in the dug out was as important as any of his stars on the park. Koubek was a powerful force and tried to get in the Jambos' heads after accusing them of time wasting tactics in the first leg, something Naismith vehemently denied. ‌ He appeared ready to go to war with his own association on Thursday before his side's league fixture with Mlada Boleslav - scheduled for Saturday - was postponed to allow them to prepare for Ibrox. McAvoy told Record Sport: 'Their manager is a wily, old, experienced guy. He's been there a few years now. ‌ 'He was a nice enough guy but I'll tell you… he was desperate for them to do well, put it that way. 'A stubborn old fox is how I would describe him. 'The little interactions we had with him you could tell his players and staff knew exactly what he was expecting of them. And to be fair he's done really well. ‌ 'Plzen are a dangerous side. They always create chances. They were extremely organised against us. 'Great record at home. It's only 12,000 capacity but a great wee arena. Their fans get right behind their team as well. 'To be fair, we nearly got a draw over there. We played a 3-5-2 that became a back five when needed and at times a 5-4-1. ‌ 'We made it tough for them and had a few snips ourselves. 'They scored in the 96th minute. The ball got crossed from the right wing to the back post area and big Daniel couldn't get his feet sorted and toe poked it beyond Craig Gordon. 'It was a killer for us. We thought we did well over the piece. ‌ 'But we probably didn't do enough in the return leg at Tynecastle. We didn't perform as well as we'd hoped. 'That's where they really impressed me. They were good away from home, really well organised, and it looks like they have done the same against Servette the other night. 'They did well in the Europa League last year. They got to the last 16 and beat Real Sociedad, Anderlecht and Dynamo Kiev on the way. ‌ 'Their number 31, Sulc, He's a good player. Skilful, direct, found good areas. He was probably their most dangerous player ( 'They played a 3-4-3 or a 3-4-1-2. They've got a kid at the back, Sampson Dweh, number 40, he could play either centre or right side, powerful, strong. 'And the boy in the centre of the park, number six, Lukas Cerv, another good player, Czech international. ‌ 'They had a massive striker, Daniel Vasulin, Number 51, who was a real handful 'Then there's Matej Vydra who I noticed scored against Servette. He had a good time in English football. ‌ 'He didn't start against us. But he's technically very good. Runs in behind, gets opportunities and chances, and he's got a goal in him. 'I thought they were a decent outfit. 'But nothing for Rangers to fear. Rangers have got a good opportunity to get through. ‌ 'The first leg being at Ibrox might help. You saw how they dealt with Panathinaikos after getting a positive result in Glasgow. 'Ibrox, with 50,000 fans in there, they need to make it as raucous as they can. Plzen did well to perform at an electric Tynecastle but Ibrox full is a different kettle of fish.' McAvoy - now number two to Mark Hughes at Carlisle United - has taken a keen interest in Martin's start to life at Ibrox. ‌ He was Alex Neil's assistant at Norwich when Martin was club captain at Carrow Road. And he could tell then that the former Scotland defender had the leadership qualities to be a success in the dug out. McAvoy said: 'I watched the game the other night against Panathinaikos. They played well. I thought they kept the ball well, they looked comfortable. ‌ 'I was impressed. I've said before that I'm confident Russell will do a good job for Rangers. 'He has a good squad and it's building all the time. ‌ 'Joe Rothwell is an excellent signing. He keeps the ball well and has good leadership qualities. 'I know young Max Aarons as well. A great boy. He's started at left back but moved to the right by the end of the game the other night. 'He had a tough two games against their wide player, Pellistri. But he's a very good player Max and I'm sure Rangers will see that over the course of the season. ‌ 'Russ will be looking at areas they can improve on. But they have got to take great confidence into the Plzen tie because Panathinaikos is as tough as they could have got at that stage. 'I was really impressed with them the other night. When you go away from home you've got to dig in and see out tough periods of the game. Sometimes you need a little luck. 'They scored at a magnificent time and after that I thought they were comfortable. 'Don't forget, Panathinaikos are a top team and there's not many people gave Rangers a chance because they're a new team with a new manager. 'Credit to Russ and his team. I really hope they can do the same against Plzen and I fancy them to get a good result.'
