THE BOSS of an iconic car brand has revealed a major update on its merger with a rival, as the company admits the EV push is hurting sales.
Despite rumours of a potential tie-up between Stellantis and Renault, both companies have denied seeking a partnership.

John Elkann, Stellantis Chairman, told the Financial Times: "We are not discussing any merger."
Management at the automotive giant has been turbulent following the resignation of the former CEO, Carlos Tavares, who they still haven't replaced.
The automotive giant currently oversees many carmakers such as Peugeot, Fiat and Vauxhall.

This has caused major concern at Stellantis, adding to the company's decision not to get involved in a massive merger.
Last year, the Auto conglomerate recorded a 12 per cent drop in shipments, which they blamed on "temporary gaps in product offerings".
On the other hand, the Renault group reported their highest sales.

"But we couldn't imagine that Covid would happen, shortage of raw materials would happen [and] the European Society – not all, not the youngest part – would turn their backs on the sustainable solutions.
"But this is the reality. We have to face those realities."

Mortgage arrears falling but remain high by international standards
The number of residential mortgage accounts in arrears for at least one year was 19,242 at end December 2024, the Department of Finance said. This is an annual decline of 1,026 mortgage accounts in long-term arrears, representing a 5pc reduction. Despite mortgage arrears numbers falling back, the Government admitted they remain high by international standards. The total number of home mortgage accounts in arrears at end of last year fell by 11pc over the year. At the end of 2024, the overall number of principal dwelling-house mortgage accounts in arrears has reduced to 42,384. This is below the previously lowest observed level of 46,322 in September 2022, the department said. The report on arrears from the department is a new annual initiative arising from the recommendations of the Mortgage Arears Review Group, which reported last September. Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said mortgage arrears resolution options continue to provide distressed mortgage borrowers with the possibility of a solution to their debt problems. Mr Donohoe said: 'I am very encouraged by the trends which have been highlighted by the mortgage arrears review of 2024. 'Mortgage arrears continue to decline at a steady pace and have withstood the pressures from the Covid-19 pandemic and the movement in ECB interest rates in recent years. 'However, these are uncertain and turbulent times and there can be no room for complacency on the part of Government or the Financial Services Industry.' The number of accounts in early arrears – defined as less than 90 days – was 15,485 at the end of last December. Early-arrears cases represent 2.2pc of all outstanding mortgage accounts on principal dwelling houses. Mr Donohoe said: 'Although mortgage arrears are declining, they remain high by international standards and the Government is committed to fostering further momentum in reducing arrears.' He said the Programme for Government pledges to continue support for Abhaile, the national mortgage arrears resolution service and ensure the enforcement of the Code of Conduct on Mortgage Arrears, recently updated as part of the Central Bank of Ireland's new consumer protection code review. The minister said the Government and its agencies have been active in offering targeted services to distressed mortgage borrowers to assist them in finding a sustainable solution to their situation. The Abhaile Service can provide free access for borrowers to financial, legal, or insolvency advice, depending on their circumstances. The Central Bank of Ireland recently revised its Code of Conduct on Mortgage Arrears as part of its review of the Consumer Protection Code. The Mortgage-to-Rent Scheme can provide a solution for distressed borrowers who have been unable to find a sustainable solution.

Companies have become cautious about making investments, says Central Bank
In its first Financial Stability Review of 2025, the bank says its assessment is that the risks facing the financial system have increased since it last reported in December. 'In the short run, the main channel through which these developments are likely to affect the domestic economy is uncertainty as well as a reduction in external demand,' said Gabriel Makhlouf, the bank's governor. 'There has already been some softening in consumer sentiment and industry engagement points to cautiousness amongst companies, at least for now, in terms of new investments.' He said that borrowers and the Irish banking system have built up substantial resilience in recent years, and these strong financial positions provide an important buffer against potential adverse shocks. 'Given the ongoing uncertainty, however, it is important that we are prepared for potential macro or market shocks, and that the financial system is maintaining – and indeed, where necessary, building - both financial and operational resilience for the period ahead,' Mr Makhlouf said. Increased uncertainty may lead to even stronger household savings, which would slow consumption and broader economic activity, and potentially affect house purchase decisions, the Financial Stability Review says. It noted that the April consumer sentiment index, the first since US president Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs, reported the largest decline since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, although this was followed by a modest improvement in May. 'A large proportion of households are employed in multinational enterprise-dominated sectors, or in the broader export-orientated sectors. An analysis of stock of mortgage credit shows a high proportion of lending to households in these exposed sectors,' the Review says. 'While the debt-service ratio for households has remained stable over the past number of years, credit risk via [that] sector represents a potential channel through which a trade shock may impact the domestic financial sector.' Although they are in a stronger position than in the past, households are exposed to potential future increases in borrowing costs, the bank points out. About 40pc of mortgages are on variable rates. Of the rest, most are fixed for less than five years. ADVERTISEMENT The Government could also face higher interest rates on its borrowings, the Review notes. As global government bonds yields rise, the interest bill on Ireland's national debt will go up, and loans will roll over onto higher rates than in the past. The higher cost of corporate bonds could also have an impact on the housing market, leading to less investment in house-building. 'As non-bank lenders that are active in Irish real estate can be sensitive to global capital market developments, a persistent deterioration in global financial conditions would have implications for development financing and could exacerbate the recent falls in private capital for residential development,' the Review says. 'Further, while the Irish sovereign has a current strong funding position, Ireland's high US exposures combined with any perceived or realised negative economic impacts arising from future trade or tax announcements may raise future borrowing costs.'

World Bank slashes global growth forecast as trade tensions bite
The World Bank has slashed its global growth forecast for 2025 by 0.4 percentage point to 2.3%, saying that higher tariffs and heightened uncertainty posed a "significant headwind" for nearly all economies. In its twice-yearly Global Economic Prospects report, the bank lowered its forecasts for nearly 70% of all economies -including the United States, China and Europe, as well as six emerging market regions - from the levels it projected just six months ago before US President Donald Trump took office. PresidentTrump has upended global trade with a series of on-again, off-again tariff hikes that have increased the effective US tariff rate from below 3% to the mid-teens - its highest level in almost a century - and triggered retaliation by China and other countries. The World Bank is the latest body to cut its growth forecast as a result of President Trump's erratic trade policies, although US officials insist the negative consequences will be offset by a surge in investment and still-to-be approved tax cuts. The bank stopped short of forecasting a recession, but said global economic growth this year would be its weakest outside of a recession since 2008. By 2027, global gross domestic product growth was expected to average just 2.5%, the slowest pace of any decade since the 1960s. The report forecast that global trade would grow by 1.8% in 2025, down from 3.4% in 2024 and roughly a third of its 5.9% level in the 2000s. The forecast is based on tariffs in effect as of late May, including a 10% US tariff on imports from most countries. It excludes increases announced by PresidentTrump in April and then postponed until July 9 to allow for negotiations. The bank said global inflation was expected to reach 2.9% in 2025, remaining above pre-COVID levels, given tariff increases and tight labor markets. "Risks to the global outlook remain tilted decidedly to the downside," the bank wrote. It said its models showed that afurther 10-percentage point increase in average US tariffs, on top of the 10% rate already implemented, and proportional retaliation by other countries, could shave another 0.5 percentage point off the outlook for 2025. Such an escalation in trade barriers would result "in globa ltrade seizing up in the second half of this year ... accompanied by a widespread collapse in confidence, surging uncertainty andturmoil in financial markets," the report said. Nonetheless, it said the risk of a global recession was less than 10%. 'FOG ON A RUNWAY' Top officials from the United States and China are meeting in London this week to try to defuse a trade dispute that has widened from tariffs to restrictions over rare earth minerals, threatening a global supply chain shock and slower growth. "Uncertainty remains a powerful drag, like fog on a runway. It slows investment and clouds the outlook," World Bank Deputy Chief Economist Ayhan Kose told Reuters in an interview. But he said there were signs of increased dialogue on trade that could help dispel uncertainty, and supply chains were adapting to a new global trade map, not collapsing. Global trade growth could see a modest rebound in 2026 to 2.4%, and developments in artificial intelligence could also boost growth, he said. "We think that eventually the uncertainty will decline," he said. "Once the type of fog we have lifts, the trade engine may start running again, but at a slower pace." Kose said while things could get worse, trade was continuing and China, India and others were still delivering robust growth. Many countries were also discussing new trade partnerships that could pay dividends later, he said. US GROWTH FORECAST CUT SHARPLY The World Bank said the global outlook had "deteriorated substantially" since January, mainly due to advanced economies, now seen growing by just 1.2%, down half a point, after expanding 1.7% in 2024. The US forecast was slashed by 0.9 percentage point from its January forecast to 1.4%, and the 2026 outlook was lowered by 0.4 percentage point to 1.6%. Rising trade barriers,"record-high uncertainty" and a spike in financial market volatility were expected to weigh on private consumption, trade and investment, it said. Growth estimates in the euro area were cut by 0.3 percentagepoint to 0.7% and in Japan by 0.5 percentage point to 0.7%. It said emerging markets and developing economies were expected to grow by 3.8% in 2025 versus 4.1% in January's forecast. Poor countries would suffer the most, the report said. By 2027 developing economies' per capita GDP would be 6% belowpre-pandemic levels, and it could take these countries - minus China - two decades to recoup the economic losses of the 2020s. Mexico, heavily dependent on trade with the U.S., saw its growth forecast cut by 1.3 percentage points to 0.2% in 2025. The World Bank left its forecast for China unchanged at 4.5% from January, saying Beijing still had monetary and fiscal space to support its economy and stimulate growth.
