Why Has TNPL Punished India Legend R Ashwin?
Legendary India allrounder Ravichandran Ashwin has been sanctioned by the Tamila Nadu Premier League for showing dissent at an umpiring decision.
Ravichandran Ashwin has reportedly been punished by the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) for dissenting against an on-field decision. During a TNPL match between Dindigul Dragons and Tiruppur Tamizhans on Sunday, Ashwin disputed an LBW decision with the umpire.
Ashwin, captain of Dindigul Dragons, attempted a sweep shot off Tiruppur Tamizhans left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore in the fifth over. Missing the ball, he was adjudged LBW. The 38-year-old's innings concluded at 18 off 11 balls, including two fours and a six.
Ashwin received a 10 per cent fine for his dissent and a further 20 per cent fine for 'misuse of equipment".
'There was a hearing conducted by the match referee after the game," Cricbuzz quoted a TNPL official as saying. 'Ashwin was fined 10 per cent for showing dissent towards the umpires and 20 per cent for misuse of equipment. He accepted the sanctions."
Ashwin's dismissal precipitated a dramatic collapse. From 39/0, Dindigul Dragons were bowled out for just 93 in 16.2 overs. Tiruppur Tamizhans comfortably chased down the target of 94, securing a nine-wicket victory in 9.1 overs.
Dindigul Dragons currently sit fifth in the TNPL 2025 points table after two games, with one win and one loss. Chepauk Super Gillies lead the standings, having won both their matches to accumulate four points.
Dindigul Dragons have a five-day break before their next match on Saturday against Madurai Panthers.
The TNPL adheres to a format similar to the IPL. The top four teams at the end of the league stage qualify for the playoffs. The top two teams compete in the first qualifier, with the winner progressing directly to the final. The loser of the first qualifier then plays the winner of the Eliminator match (contested between the third and fourth placed teams) in the second qualifier with the winner entering the final.
The final is scheduled for 6 July.
