Asean mulls full dialogue partner status for Turkiye

KUALA LUMPUR: Asean is considering granting Turkiye full dialogue partner status in the near future as relations between both sides continue to strengthen.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the matter is being considered in light of Turkiye's growing collaboration with Asean member states, particularly in the fields of technology, security, and defence.
"Turkiye has played a constructive role as a sectoral dialogue partner with Asean, with various initiatives already carried out together.
"These include cooperation in technology, security, defence, agriculture, and the provision of scholarships to students from Asean member countries.
"So we are considering the best way forward in bringing Turkiye in as a full dialogue partner of Asean in the near future, God willing," he said briefly after the Trilateral Meeting between Malaysia, Turkiye, and the Asean Secretariat.
Mohamad added that Asean may not be open to expanding dialogue partnerships further at this point, citing a moratorium due to the already large number of existing partners.
In his opening remarks, he welcomed deeper cooperation in defence and technology transfer as a means to further strengthen ties with Turkiye.
He also said economic relations are expected to deepen, particularly through the Turkiye–Asean Business and Investment Forum, support for MSME development, and innovation partnerships.
"Turkiye's expertise in e-governance can be instrumental in promoting digital integration, diversifying supply chains, and strengthening collective resilience — all crucial as we navigate current geo-economic challenges," he said.
On the socio-cultural front, he cited initiatives such as the Turkiye Scholarships–AseanJoint Scholarship Programme, diplomatic training, and proposed collaboration in vocational education and digital skills development as key to enhancing people-to-people ties.
He also called on Asean and Turkiye to present a united front in advocating for peaceful and just resolutions to global conflicts, including the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
"We must call for Israel to be held accountable for its unrelenting violations of international law.
"Impunity has emboldened it to attack other countries, and it will continue to destabilise the region and beyond if left unchecked."
The Asean-Turkiye Sectoral Dialogue Partnership was established in 2017.

SCCI, Maybank in pact to drive investments in Southeast Asia, with focus on JS-SEZ

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is set to benefit from a landmark memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) and Maybank Singapore Ltd. The MoU aims to enhance cross-border business collaboration and stimulate investments across Southeast Asia, with a strategic focus on Singapore, Malaysia and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Maybank Singapore CEO Alvin Lee Han Eng said with a dual-market advantage in Singapore and Malaysia, as one of the earliest proponents of the JS-SEZ, Maybank is committed to supporting businesses with a comprehensive suite of banking solutions, while identifying twinning opportunities for expansion into the zone. 'Beyond deepening economic cooperation between Singapore and Malaysia, Maybank also brings the strength of its presence across all 10 Asean markets to support SCCCI members in pursuing regional growth ambitions,' he said in a statement. The MoU signing was witnessed by Singapore's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang. With Southeast Asia poised to become the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030 and a projected combined gross domestic product of US$4.5 trillion (RM19 trillion), the region offers significant growth opportunities, particularly in the digital and green economy sectors. In this regard, Malaysia positions itself as a key investment hub for Singaporean businesses due to its diversified economy. Against this backdrop, Singapore and Malaysia are working collaboratively to advance the JS-SEZ and other bilateral initiatives aimed at strengthening economic growth, improving connectivity, enhancing supply chain integration, and creating employment opportunities, therefore unlocking Southeast Asia's significant economic potential. Building on this momentum, SCCCI and Maybank will collaborate on initiatives aimed at promoting economic development, investment and trade, with the JS-SEZ as a strategic focal point. This will include jointly organising meetings, visits, conferences, workshops and networking events, while launching new initiatives to advance shared objectives. In addition, Maybank will provide tailored solutions including green lane financing, trade finance, cash management, and environmental, social and governance-linked products, and facilitate faster account onboarding for businesses. SCCCI members will also benefit from capacity-building programmes in areas such as sustainability, halal advisory, and financial services, supported by dedicated advisory services from Maybank's JS-SEZ Desk. The MoU is expected to benefit an estimated 5,000 SCCCI corporate members. SCCCI president Kho Choon Keng said this strategic partnership between SCCCI and Maybank strengthens its members' competitiveness for the future. 'In the face of an increasingly complex and rapidly changing business landscape, strong financial capabilities and deep regional insight are critical. 'By combining SCCCI's business network with Maybank's financial strength, we will help our members and local businesses access cross-border financing, build ESG competencies, and gain valuable market insights. Together, we will open up new economic opportunities and help our members and businesses succeed in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia,' he said. The SCCCI-Maybank Mid-Year Business Forum: Outlook 2025 held in Singapore today highlighted the momentum of this collaboration.

New Zealand seeks halal industry and trade partnership with Malaysia

WELLINGTON: New Zealand has shown strong interest in deepening collaboration with Malaysia, particularly in the halal industry and regional trade. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi shared that New Zealand's Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Trade, and Investment, Todd McClay, affirmed this commitment during their bilateral meeting. 'The New Zealand government aims to be a strategic partner to Malaysia, not only in halal certification but also by leveraging Malaysia as a gateway to the ASEAN market, which has a population exceeding 600 million,' Ahmad Zahid told reporters. The discussions followed Ahmad Zahid's visit to New Zealand's National Crisis Management Centre (Beehive Bunker), a key facility for disaster and emergency response. McClay also expressed openness to importing Malaysian agricultural products, including tropical fruits like pineapples. Malaysian firms were further encouraged to explore investment opportunities in New Zealand's construction sector. Ahmad Zahid highlighted that the meeting resulted in a strategic agreement to expand bilateral trade, with New Zealand actively participating in regional platforms such as the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)-China Summit and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). He expressed optimism that Malaysia-New Zealand relations would serve as a model for Indo-Pacific cooperation, benefiting both nations. Separately, during a gathering with the Malaysian diaspora in Wellington, Ahmad Zahid announced a NZ$100,000 (RM251,000) allocation to Rumah Malaysia to support National Day celebrations. The funding aims to ease event preparations while acknowledging the patriotism of Malaysians abroad. - Bernama
