
These are the best cruise lines according to passengers
With more than 50 brands sailing to a variety of ocean and river destinations across the world, choosing the best cruise can be tricky.
You could pick by ship, size, the best cruise deals, facilities, timing or even based on bucket list location. Cruise lines will also point to the industry awards they have received, highlighting the onboard experience such as food, entertainment, facilities and excursions.
Another way of finding a suitable cruise for you is to see what other passengers think.
Consumer watchdog Which? has released its latest cruise passenger survey, helping sailors find the best line for their budget.
In October 2024, it asked 2,865 members of Which? Connect and the general public about their experiences of cruise holidays in the past two years.
The survey considers factors such as customer service, passenger-to-space ratio, food, cabin quality, the itinerary and value for money to give a passenger score for each cruise line.
Brands are also rated by how transparent they are about prices at the booking stage.
Cruise companies that score at least four out of five stars for customer service and passenger-to-space ratio are given the accolade of being a Which? Recommended Provider (WRP).
The highest scoring brand this year was Saga Ocean Cruises, making it the top WRP.
Silversea, Noble Caledonia Ocean Cruises, Hurtigruten, Seabourn, Viking Ocean Cruises and Oceania Cruises also got WRP status.
Best cruise line
Over-50s brand Saga was named best cruise line with an overall customer score of 87 per cent.
Saga Cruises sailors loved its complimentary transfer to and from the port. This feature was rated five stars, as was customer service, and food and drink. The research highlighted 'brilliant service, with almost everything included'.
Commenting on the rating, Nigel Blanks, chief executive of Saga Cruises said: 'I'm proud that Saga Cruises has been recognised by Which? as a recommended provider of ocean cruises for an incredible fifth year in a row. This is a great achievement that reflects our dedication to providing our valued guests with high levels of service, excellent all-inclusive value and exceptional experiences aboard our boutique ships.'
Best luxury cruise line
There are plenty of luxury cruise brands to choose from, giving passengers top service and facilities at sea.
Silversea came out on top in the Which? research, with a passenger score of 85 per cent.
Describing the line as 'ultra luxury on the high seas', the report highlighted the range of small ship sailings across all seven continents, including access to more remote ports in Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands.
The consumer group said: 'Its fully all-inclusive voyages include all excursions and an around-the-clock white-gloved butler, who will even unpack your suitcase for you.
'One repeat customer told us the only thing he'd ever been billed for was his laundry. Standards are exceptionally high: all suites (rated five stars) have ocean views and many a private veranda. Food and drink are top-notch, with sushi, jazz bars and champagne on tap.
'All of this adds up to an eye-watering price per night, but passengers still awarded Silversea four stars for value for money.'
With an indicative price of £720 per night, Which? said that if you can afford it, 'Silversea is well worth the splurge'.
Best adventure cruise line
For those seeking a cruise expedition, small ship brand Noble Caledonia was a passenger favourite, with a score of 84 per cent.
Noble Caledonia was the only cruise line to clinch the full five stars for excursions and most are included in the headline price along with beer and wine during meals.
Its biggest vessel sleeps just 188 passengers and onboard entertainment comprises of lectures and lounge music rather than casinos and cabaret, Which? said.
The report added: 'Guests liked it this way, with one praising the 'friendly, convivial atmosphere'.'
It was described as a 'solid choice' for those who favour exciting expeditions over black-tie balls.
Cheaper cruises
The research highlights Costa Cruises, Fred Olsen and Royal Caribbean as the best cheaper cruises.
With an indicative price of £111 per night, Costa Cruises received a passenger score of 81 per cent.
The Carnival Corporation brand is described as 'back to basics', with cruises around the Med, Asia and the Caribbean.
For the cheap headline fare, Which? said passengers will get four-star rated Italian meals and onboard entertainment 'but not much else'. Extras such as alcoholic drinks need to be paid for.
Which? said: '(Costa) gets a lot of criticism, especially from experienced cruisers who feel it doesn't deliver what's promised – it got just two stars for description matching reality. But the brand has introduced cruising to a younger, more family-friendly crowd who couldn't afford the all-inclusive cost of a traditional cruise.'
Cabins are described as mediocre and the ship facilities scored three stars.
It was still rated as good value for money though and was described as 'truly no-frills, but at a rock-bottom price'.
Norwegian family-run Fred Olsen received a passenger score of 80 per cent, with an indicative price per night of £194.
While it costs more than rivals Cunard and P&O Cruises, Which? said Fred Olsen's customer service and cabins scored better and received five stars.
The research said: 'Ships are fairly small, holding around 1,300 passengers, while all have a sauna, spa and fitness centre on board. Two have a retractable roof, so you can enjoy the lido deck in any weather. If quizzes and theatre shows aren't your thing, there are art classes and stargazing to keep you entertained. Its customer base is certainly loyal – one told us they had clocked up 23 cruises with Fred Olsen so far and feel 'very at home and at ease on their ships.'
Popular family-focused brand Royal Caribbean received a passenger score of 78 per cent and is included among the cheaper cruises with an indicative price of £110 per night.
Passengers said it was their favourite cruise line for exploring the Caribbean.
The brand scored three stars for passenger-to-space ratio, helped by its megaships such as Icon of the Seas.
It also got five stars for the quality of its cabins.
Which? said Royal Caribbean can't be beaten for fun-filled activities, 'if that's your thing'.

For many, Bangor - nestled on the coast of Wales and just a stone's throw from Snowdonia National Park - is a coastal gem wrapped up in nostalgia and natural beauty. Classed as the oldest city in the country, and commonly mistaken as a town, Bangor is filled with a rich history, unique architecture, and an impressive Victorian pier that stretches almost half a kilometre out to sea. Residents insist their hometown has 'lots to offer', but Bangor was sensationally snubbed earlier this year when it was ranked as the worst seaside resort in the whole of the UK. Earning a measly 42 per cent overall destination score, almost 5,000 Which? members gave the destination just one star for its seafront/ pier, food and drink offerings, shopping experience, and tourist attractions. Bangor redeemed itself slightly with its scenery and parking availability. "It's disappointing to see Bangor City named as one of the UK's worst seaside towns," said Bangor City Council at the time. "Such rankings often fail to capture the full picture and the unique charms that make Bangor City so special." However, Bangor's sliding reputation has recently been cast under the spotlight once more due to the sale of its premier shopping complex, the Menai Centre, which reports describe as another 'blow' to the city. Developed back in 2007 by Cathco Property Group - reportedly costing £18.5 million to build - the 130,000 square ft building struggled during the pandemic, which caused almost 80 per cent of its shops to close down. According to North Wales Live, it was bought by Bearmont Capital back in 2023, who added a bunch of retailers including he Original Factory Shop (TOFS), Greggs, and Hays Travel to the complex. Plans to open a major health centre in the complex in place of the former Debenhams store, using Welsh Government funds, have also been unveiled. The centre has now been placed up for auction with a guide price of just £4.2 million - a mere fraction of the price it cost to build. However, the sale does not include the Debenhams unit or a linked site, which was sold off a number of years ago. "If no stand out bids are received or bids received are of a similar value then a reserve price will be set on the property and it will be sold via a live online auction (date to be determined subject to Stage 1 of the process)," Savills, who is selling the property, said. Speaking to the Mirror, a spokesperson for the council stressed that Bangor doesn't have a beach and has never promoted itself as a 'seaside resort' - despite being located near the sea. "Similarly, Bangor does not promote itself as a tourist destination," they added. "We do, of course, have interesting attractions, such as St Deiniol's Cathedral, Garth Pier (which won the National Pier of the Year award in 2022), and the University building, to name a few, and Bangor is an ideal base to visit North Wales's attractions. However, to consider Bangor as a seaside resort would be flawed and inaccurate. In contrast to the Which survey, another survey found that the people of Bangor as the happiest people in the County." The spokesperson added that the council does not consider the sale of the Menai centre as a 'blow to the city' as most of the retail units within the complex are 'occupied on long leases' that won't be impacted by the change of ownership. "The sale, several months ago, of the other Bangor shopping centre, namely the Deiniol Centre, has not impacted negatively on the units within it nor on the City and there is no reason to think that this one will," they stated. "This year, Bangor is celebrating 1500 since St Deiniol established his religious settlement here and to mark this important milestone, the City has come together and is hosting an ambitious programme of events. It has something for everyone, from a military parade to music concerts, from Bangor's Across the World Exhibition to a History Festival, from the Summer Festival to the Christmas Festival and much more. The one exception being that Bangor does not have a beach."

Sports Direct pricing could be misleading shoppers, Which? claims
The watchdog has reported Sports Direct to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) following tip-offs over the retail giant's use of Recommended Retail Prices (RRPs). Sports Direct commonly prices its products with a comparative RRP figure to indicate it is offering customers a cheaper deal. But Which? said its researchers could not find some items sold at Sports Direct's stated RRP price anywhere else online. As well as using RRPs as reference prices, the chain also uses terms such as Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) or Suggested Retail Price (SRP), which the watchdog believed would also be interpreted by consumers as being the same as an RRP. Which? said it was tipped off about 'suspicious' RRPs by Which? readers, and proceeded to look at the pricing of 160 popular products on Overall, for 58 of the 160 products investigated, Which? found no retailer selling them online at or above the Sports Direct reference price. For a further 53, Which? did find the product at or above the reference price at another retailer, but in each case that retailer was part of the Frasers Group, Sports Direct's owner. All of these items were Frasers Group own-brand products. Mike Ashley's Frasers Group has a large portfolio of brands under its umbrella including Jack Wills, Slazenger, Everlast and Lonsdale. Frasers Group also owns various retailers such as USC, Studio, and Get the Label, which sometimes appeared to be the only sellers of these particular brands, Which? said. Which? found a Jack Wills Hunston graphic logo hoodie in green for £24 at Sports Direct, with the item advertised as having a Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of £54.99. Which? researchers could not find the item sold or supplied by anyone other than Frasers Group retailers. It was £40 on Amazon – which is supplied by Sports Direct – but all the other retailers sold it at £24. Which? also found a pair of Slazenger men's tennis shoes selling at Sports Direct for £32.99 – nearly half the MSRP of £64.99. Which? found the trainers sold on eight other websites, but the owner or seller was always part of the parent company. Seven retailers sold them for £32.99, or in one case £33. Only one retailer, Slazenger itself, sold them at the MSRP. A Whitaker Somerfield long sleeve base layer for equestrian sports was also selling at Sports Direct at £8 with an RRP of £35. Unlike the other examples, Whitaker Somerfield is not a brand owned by Sports Direct or Frasers Group, but Which? researchers could not find it sold or supplied by anyone else online other than Frasers Group retailers. The highest price found was £18 – still a long way short of the supposed £35 reference price, Which? said. Which? said it believed some of Sports Direct's uses of RRPs and MSRPs could be 'misleading actions' under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, as they could mislead people about the value of a product and savings they could make. Which? legal expert Lisa Webb said: 'If Sports Direct is misleading customers by inappropriate use of RRPs to dupe them into thinking they are getting a good deal, then the competition regulator needs to step in and take strong action to stop this from happening. 'In the meantime, shoppers should take any big discounts at with a pinch of salt and make sure they compare prices with other retailers before parting with any hard earned cash.' Sports Direct declined to immediately comment.
