Chicago Stars fire head coach Lorne Donaldson after rough start

The Guardian30-04-2025

The Chicago Stars FC fired second-year head coach Lorne Donaldson after a 1-5-0 start.
Masaki Hemmi, the first assistant coach, was named interim head coach on Wednesday. Hemmi is the Stars' fifth head coach – acting or permanent – since Nov. 22. 2021.
'We are grateful to Lorne Donaldson for the culture, respect and sense of self-belief he helped build within our squad,' said Richard Feuz, the Stars' general manager. 'We appreciate his work and wish him the best for the future.'
The Stars hired Donaldson, then 68, in December 2023, hoping the former head coach of the Jamaican Women's National Team could turn around a franchise that has not won a playoff game since 2021.
The team made the playoffs last season despite a 10-14-2 record, after finishing in last place in the National Women's Soccer League in 2023, and lost its opener to No. 1 seed Orlando Pride.
The Stars are headed in the opposite direction of the playoffs this season, standing in last place with just three points.
In their first six games, the Stars have scored three goals and given up 14. Their only victory came 13 April when they defeated Bay FC 2-1.
The Stars next play on the road Sunday against Gotham FC (3-2-2, 11 points).

Northern Irish basketball star earns pre-draft workout with NBA team

The 22-year-old guard, who currently plays for college side the Charleston Cougars, will take part in the event in a bid to impress the Timberwolves' coaches ahead of the NBA Draft, which begins on June 25. Fulton, the son of former Ireland international Adrian, started his career with St Malachy's College and Belfast Star in Northern Ireland before securing a move Stateside in 2020, joining the Winchendon School in Boston. A switch to Lafayette University followed after securing a basketball scholarship and he would then move on to Charleston, whom he featured for in college basketball's annual 'March Madness' tournament last year. Now he will get a shot at standing out in front of an franchise that only just missed out on going to the NBA Finals this year, losing the Western Conference Finals for the second year in a row, beaten by the Oklahoma City Thunder after missing out to the Dallas Mavericks a year ago. Were he to break into the NBA then Fulton would follow in the footsteps of Dublin's Pat Burke, who played for the Orlando Magic and Phoenix Suns in the early 2000s, while Susan Moran featured for the WNBA's New York Liberty in 2002. Fulton could make history, however, as he would the first Irish-trained player to reach the NBA should be dress for a game at any point as Burke, while Dublin born, moved to Cleveland, Ohio when he was just three-years-old. While he is not currently listed inside the top-100 expected draft picks, that does not mean the Belfast man could not forge a successful career for himself, with the likes of Artis Gilmore and Randy Smith (both 1971) having been drafted outside the top-100 and gone on to become All-Stars.

Man Utd's new third kit leaked as fans blast: 'You couldn't pay me to wear it'

Adidas' attempt to recreate a classic Manchester United strip for the 2025/26 season has not gone down well with supporters, who have slammed the black and yellow kit Manchester United have hit rock bottom after ending a miserable season – and now their leaked new kit is being slammed by fans. United ended their 2024/25 campaign 15th in the Premier League and without any European football to look forward to after tasting defeat in the Europa League final. Ruben Amorim's side then added some more embarrassment by losing to an ASEAN All-Stars side in Kuala Lumpur during an all-advised post-season tour. ‌ The atmosphere around the club hasn't been helped by Sir Jim Ratcliffe's job-cutting crusade ahead of a summer transfer window which could see a huge number of players leave. ‌ To make matters worse, United's kits for the upcoming 2025/26 campaign have been leaked on social media. Kit manufacturer Adidas have created a third kit comprised of black, yellow and blue, which – as is the way these days – harks back to happier times. The apparent third strip that Amorim's players will be wearing next season is an attempt to recall the era of Eric Cantona and co from 1993 to 1995. The new version doesn't have a collar and has Snapdragon as the front-of-shirt sponsor, but it is a close copy of the original Umbro version. Needless to say, it hasn't gone down well with all United fans. 'The worst shirt I've ever seen, couldn't pay me to wear it,' one furious supporter wrote on social media. 'Third shirt for what? We ain't in Europe,' another pointed out. 'United slowly losing its identity,' a third wrote, while another simply concluded: 'F****** ugly.' ‌ HAVE YOUR SAY! What do you make of the leaked kit? Comment below. However, it wasn't all bad, with some fans liking the retro throwback. 'This is so so good,' one wrote. 'Is this legit!? Looks class,' another added. Another wrote: 'Monochrome badge brings it down to a 9/10 rather than a 10/10.' The leaked home shirt looks pretty straightforward: a red number with black and white touches, while the away shirt is a bold all-white effort. ‌ It will be some time until fans see players wearing them, with United taking a not-so well-earned break after the tour of Malaysia and Hong Kong. The club are not involved in this summer's Club World Cup, so will take some time off before reconvening for pre-season. United begin their pre-season against Leeds in Stockholm on July 19 before flying over to the Untied States for games against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton. They then return to Old Trafford to play Fiorentina on August 9 before the Premier League begins again on August 16. What's for certain is that it will be a dramatically different United squad next season, with the club overhauling things in the transfer window. Matheus Cunha is set to be the first arrival of the summer window after United agreed to pay Wolves his £62.5million release clause, while Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo is another target.
