Watch: Batter Drops Mobile Phone While Taking Run During County Championship Match

Last Updated:
In bizarre scenes, a Lancashire batter Tom Bailey ended up dropping a mobile phone while taking a run during a County Championship match.
This one has to be one of the weirdest incidents to have happened during a cricket match at professional level. It was part hilarious and part controversial with the commentators in splits while wondering if sanctions will follow.
During a County Championship Division Two match between Lancashire and Gloucestershire, a mobile phone fell off Tom Bailey's pocket while he was attempting to take a second run.
An absent-minded Bailey walked in to bat at no. 10 for Lancashire at Old Trafford with his mobile phone in pocket which fell to the ground after he flicked one away to take two runs off Josh Shaw in the 114th over.
'Something has dropped out of his pocket. I think it's his mobile phone!" said one of the commentators.
While trying to contain his laughter, the commentator also wondered if Bailey, a fast bowler, will be reported to the match officials for the offense.
'As much as it is hilarious and we are laughing about it, I almost wonder if that's going to have to be reported. The fact that he was out in the middle with a mobile phone in his pocket," the commentator said.
According to reports, Ajeet Singh Dale of Gloucestershire retrieved the phone and took it off the field before the play resumed.
As per the rules, usage of electronic communication devices and equipment that enables communication between players on field and off it is not allowed.
'With the exception of player movement technology the use of electronic communication devices and equipment of any kind which enables communication between on-field players and anyone not on the field of play shall not be permitted during the scheduled or rescheduled hours of play," states the clause 41.5 of the County Championship Playing Conditions.
Bailey scored an unbeaten 22 off 31 with the help of two fours as Lancashire were bowled out for 450 in response to Gloucestershire's 589-all out.

England spinner Sophie Ecclestone takes break from international cricket to manage her well-being

London [UK], June 7 (ANI): Spinner Sophie Ecclestone has decided to take a break from international cricket to manage her well-being ahead of India's tour of England, set to begin later this month. According to ESPNcricinfo, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said Ecclestone was available for selection for the India series, featuring five T20Is and three ODIs. However, she decided to take time out to deal with a minor quad injury along with her well-being. 'Sophie has been managing a quad niggle over the past week but more importantly she wants to take a step back from cricket for a short period to look after herself,' Charlotte Edwards, England Women's head coach said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. 'We're totally behind that. We want to be able to select Sophie for the India series but the most important thing for her at the moment is that she feels in a better place. We all agree that a break now could be beneficial for her to achieve that,' Edwards added. Ecclestone wasn't included in England's ongoing West Indies series as she was recovering from a knee injury. Last month, on the day of the squad announcement, she was playing for Lancashire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup. Since then, Ecclestone has made eight appearances across all formats, scalping 14 wickets, including 4/12 against Surrey in the T20 Women's County Cup final. Last Sunday, she registered figures of 2/24 in Lancashire's Vitality Blast victory over Durham. In Ecclestone's absence, Linsey Smith clinched a five-wicket haul on her ODI debut against the West Indies. Ecclestone's decision comes in the aftermath of a turbulent period for England. They were thrashed 6-0 by Australia in the Ashes. After the Ashes defeat, Jon Lewis left the head coach position and was replaced by Edwards. Heather Knight stepped down from the captaincy role. Sophie Ecclestone takes break from cricket for well-being before India series

England spinner Sophie Ecclestone has opted for a break from domestic cricket to prioritise her well-being before the series against India. The 26-year-old left-arm spinner was recently left out of the national squad for their ongoing white-ball series against the West Indies. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), however, said that Ecclestone remained available for selection for the series against India. Apart from focussing on her well-being, Ecclestone took time off from the game to manage a minor quad injury. advertisementCharlotte Edwards, who recently took charge as England women's head coach after replacing Jon Lewis, backed Ecclestone's decision to take a break. "Sophie has been managing a quad niggle over the past week but, more importantly, she wants to take a step back from cricket for a short period to look after herself,' Edwards said in a statement. "We're totally behind that. We want to be able to select Sophie for the India series but the most important thing for her at the moment is that she feels in a better place. We all agree that a break now could be beneficial for her to achieve that,' Edwards added. On the very day when England's squad for the West Indies were announced, Ecclestone represented Lancashire in the Women's One-Day Cup. Since then, the youngster has 14 wickets from eight matches, including a four-wicket haul against Surrey in the T20 Women's County Cup final. advertisementEcclestone has been an effective spinner for England, having taken 297 wickets from 177 matches with seven four-wicket hauls and five five-wicket hauls. Ecclestone also plays for the UP Warriorz in the Women's Premier League (WPL). India's tour of England starts on June 28 with the T20I series opener at The Trent Bridge in Nottingham. The T20I series will be followed by the ODI series, which is scheduled to get underway on July 16 in Southampton.

Ecclestone to take break to prioritise wellbeing

London, June 7 (UNI) England spinner Sophie Ecclestone will take a break from domestic cricket as she manages a quad injury and to "prioritise her wellbeing". Ecclestone, 26, was left out of England's first squad under new coach Charlotte Edwards because she was recovering from a knee injury. She played for the UP Warriorz in India's Women's Premier League in February but was sidelined for two months and missed the beginning of Lancashire's domestic season. The left-arm spinner has since played two one-day matches and six T20s for her county, but was withdrawn from their match against Hampshire on Tuesday because of the quad problem. At this stage, Ecclestone, who is the number one-ranked ODI bowler in the world, remains available for England's white-ball series against India, which begins on 28 June at Trent Bridge, the BBC reported. "Sophie has been managing a quad niggle over the past week but more importantly she wants to take a step back from cricket for a short period to look after herself," said Edwards. "We're totally behind that. We want to be able to select Sophie for the India series but the most important thing for her at the moment is that she feels in a better place. "We all agree that a break now could be beneficial for her to achieve that." England insisted Ecclestone's omission from the squad for the ongoing West Indies series was not related to the controversy that overshadowed an awful Ashes tour of Australia earlier this year. During England's 16-0 series defeat Ecclestone refused to take part in a TV interview conducted by former team-mate Alex Hartley, following her criticism of England's fitness during the T20 World Cup in November. England have comfortably beaten West Indies, winning both the one-day international and T20 series, but are expected to face a much greater challenge against India, who are also hosting the 50-over World Cup at the end of September. "Mental health is so important," Hartley told BBC Test Match Special during the final ODI against West Indies at Taunton. "If she [Ecclestone] feels she needs a refresh and if she's going to miss a series or a bit of domestic cricket, but it means she's fit for the World Cup, ultimately that's what we want." UNI BM
