Derbyshire wrap up innings win over Kent
Rothesay County Championship Division Two, County Ground, Derby (day four) Derbyshire 587-5 dec: Jewell 232, Madsen 100, Came 89, Lloyd 50, Reece 50 Kent 326 & 247 (f/o): Muyeye 55, Compton 49, Stewart 49; Reece 3-21 Derbyshire (23 pts) beat Kent (2 pts) by an innings and 14 runs Match scorecard Luis Reece led Derbyshire's victory charge as they rolled over Kent before lunch on the final day of the County Championship Division Two match at Derby. The all-rounder picked up two wickets to claim outstanding figures of 3-21 from 10 overs as they beat the visitors by an innings and 14 runs After Zak Chappell struck with the first ball of the day, Kent folded in feeble fashion, losing four wickets in eight overs, to slump to 247-9, with the injured Jake Ball unable to bat. It was Derbyshire's second win of the season, taking them above Glamorgan to second in the table, while Kent have now lost four matches in a row. Their slide to another defeat started when Tawanda Muyeye was caught behind taking on a short ball from Chappell. Muyeye clearly thought it had come off his shoulder but given his side were still 104 runs behind with three wickets already down, it was not a great shot for the situation. That was a straightforward catch for Brooke Guest but the wicketkeeper took a much sharper one five overs later standing up to Reece when Chris Benjamin pushed forward and edged into his gloves. Kent's hopes of at least frustrating Derbyshire now rested with Jack Leaning and Harry Finch but the pair were quickly parted with Reece celebrating a second success of the morning. Leaning failed to get over a drive and substitute fielder Nick Potts took a good tumbling catch diving forward at deep mid-off. Derbyshire were now all over the visitors and in the next over, Finch went to turn Anuj Dal off his legs but the ball came off his thigh pad and onto the stumps. Matt Parkinson had resisted well as nightwatchman in the first innings but this time he lasted only seven balls before he went half forward to Jack Morley and was lbw. Grant Stewart struck some muscular blows, pulling Pat Brown for six, but the end came 15 minutes before the interval when he sliced the fast bowler to third man where Potts pulled off a superb diving catch. England batter Duckett extends deal with Notts
England top-order batter Ben Duckett has signed an extended contract with Nottinghamshire until the end of the 2027 season. Duckett has scored more than 5,500 runs in all formats for Notts since joining in August 2018 from Northamptonshire. His runs have helped the county win the 2020 Vitality Blast final and the County Championship Division Two title two years later. "It was an absolute no-brainer to extend my time with Nottinghamshire," Duckett told the club website. "I love playing at Trent Bridge, it's my favourite English ground, and this team and coaching staff are a fantastic group that have been so valuable for my development on and off the field. "Playing for England has been a dream come true, but the role that Nottinghamshire have played in helping me to achieve that has been crucial." Duckett has scored four hundreds and 13 half-centuries in 30 Tests for England, and has racked up 10,809 first-class runs in 155 matches. The 30-year-old, who is in the England squad for this month's one-off Test with Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, has played once for the County Championship leaders this season. Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores said: "Though we might not see as much of him as before, he's still a hugely valuable member of our squad. "It has been a privilege to watch him develop over the years, and his desire to keep improving is a great example to our other players. "His quality as a three-format player is not in question, and to have that level of player around the group - even when he's not playing - is always a good thing."

Will Virat Kohli's retirement opens door for out-of-contention Cheteshwar Pujara for India's tour of England?
Virat Kohli's retirement from Test cricket on Monday left everyone shocked. The former India captain's retirement from the longest format was on cards since reports emerged that the star batter doesn't want to fly to England for the five-match Test series next month. Kohli's retirement has created a void in the Indian middle-order ahead of the series against England which starts on June 20. While India have the likes of Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant in the middle order, it looks largely experienced considering the English conditions which favours pace and swing. With no Kohli at No.4, the names of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara have cropped up whether the senior duo deserves a chance against England. Both Rahane and Pujara have been among the runs in the domestic cricket recently, scoring bulk of runs. For the record, Pujara scored 402 runs in seven matches at an average of 40.20 for Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25, while Rahane managed managed 467 runs at an average of 35.92 for Mumbai in the same tournament. In fact, Pujara had scored a double hundred too. Both Pujara and Rahane, last played for India in Tests was in 2023. One of the major aspects that keeps Pujara ahead of Rahane was the former's form for Sussex during County Championships in 2023 and 2024 season. Since his last Test for India, Pujara has extensively featured for Sussex across formats, scoring a bulk of runs. In 2023 season of County Championship Division Two, Pujara played eight matches, scoring 649 runs, which included three centuries at an average of 54.08. The right hander returned for the next season to score another 501 runs from six games at 62.62, including two hundreds. Earlier in the year, Pujara has also expressed his desire to play for the Indian team again if given a chance. "I am playing domestic cricket. If given a chance, I am ready to grab it with both hands. The hunger is even more. When you are older, you need to work even harder," Pujara has said at a RevSportz conclave. Pujara, so far has played 103 Tests, scoring 7195 runs with 19 hundreds. In England, Pujara has played 16 Tests, scoring 870 runs with a best of 132.

Watch: Batter Drops Mobile Phone While Taking Run During County Championship Match
Last Updated: In bizarre scenes, a Lancashire batter Tom Bailey ended up dropping a mobile phone while taking a run during a County Championship match. This one has to be one of the weirdest incidents to have happened during a cricket match at professional level. It was part hilarious and part controversial with the commentators in splits while wondering if sanctions will follow. During a County Championship Division Two match between Lancashire and Gloucestershire, a mobile phone fell off Tom Bailey's pocket while he was attempting to take a second run. An absent-minded Bailey walked in to bat at no. 10 for Lancashire at Old Trafford with his mobile phone in pocket which fell to the ground after he flicked one away to take two runs off Josh Shaw in the 114th over. 'Something has dropped out of his pocket. I think it's his mobile phone!" said one of the commentators. While trying to contain his laughter, the commentator also wondered if Bailey, a fast bowler, will be reported to the match officials for the offense. 'As much as it is hilarious and we are laughing about it, I almost wonder if that's going to have to be reported. The fact that he was out in the middle with a mobile phone in his pocket," the commentator said. According to reports, Ajeet Singh Dale of Gloucestershire retrieved the phone and took it off the field before the play resumed. As per the rules, usage of electronic communication devices and equipment that enables communication between players on field and off it is not allowed. 'With the exception of player movement technology the use of electronic communication devices and equipment of any kind which enables communication between on-field players and anyone not on the field of play shall not be permitted during the scheduled or rescheduled hours of play," states the clause 41.5 of the County Championship Playing Conditions. Bailey scored an unbeaten 22 off 31 with the help of two fours as Lancashire were bowled out for 450 in response to Gloucestershire's 589-all out. First Published: May 05, 2025, 10:07 IST
