How China's EV titans can end the industry's forever price war

China's electric vehicle (EV) industry has achieved resounding success, marking a triumph for Chinese industrial policy and entrepreneurship. However, the sector now stands at a critical turning point.
In May, BYD shocked markets by
slashing prices on 22 of its models, bringing the entry-level price of its popular Seagull model down to just 55,800 yuan (US$7,700). Competitors rushed to match these cuts, fuelling an unsustainable race to the bottom.
Last year, BYD reportedly told suppliers to slash prices by 10 per cent. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has cautioned that such ruthless competition would undermine long-term innovation and safety standards. 'There are no winners in a price war, let alone a future,' a ministry spokesperson told state media, marking a rare and blunt public rebuke.
The underlying issue is stark: China's EV market is oversaturated. According to Jato Dynamics, there are now 115 Chinese EV brands vying for market share. However, after last financial year's third quarter, 25 per cent of firms were in the red. Additionally, over 50 per cent of firms have less than 0.1 per cent market share.

Hong Kong stocks kicked off trading on a cautious note on Monday ahead of a deadline for a US-China tariff pause and earnings from China's biggest technology companies. Xinyi Solar Holdings rallied 4.8 per cent to HK$3.33 and BYD Electronic International jumped 4.6 per cent to HK$38.12. Alibaba Group Holding added 0.9 per cent to HK$117.30. The 90-day tariff ceasefire between Beijing and Washington expires on Tuesday following a third round of talks in Stockholm last month. UBS' wealth management unit said last week that the tariff on Chinese exports to the US may eventually range between 30 and 40 per cent. Corporate earnings will also be in focus. Some of the biggest constituents in the Hang Seng Index are due to disclose interim reports this week, with Tencent Holdings on Wednesday and Alibaba on Friday. Advertisement Lithium maker Tianqi Lithium and peer Ganfeng Lithium jumped after Contemporary Amperex Technology said that it had suspended operations at its Jianxiawo mine in the eastern Jiangxi province for at least three months.

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD is targeting first-time buyers in Hong Kong with the launch of a competitively priced car model, building on its recent ascension as the local market leader, overtaking Tesla. On Friday, the Shenzhen-based carmaker introduced the Atto 2, a fully electric right-hand-drive compact SUV priced at HK$169,800 (US$21,630) after tax in Hong Kong. Equipped with BYD's proprietary blade battery packs, the Atto 2 has a range of up to 410km (254 miles) on a single charge – more than adequate for daily commutes in the city. Recharging the battery from 10 per cent to 80 per cent takes just 38 minutes, according to BYD. 'Our pricing is quite reasonable and very affordable,' said Liu Xueliang, BYD's Asia-Pacific sales general manager, during an interview in Hong Kong. 'Our main focus is to attract young people,' he said, adding that the company aimed to 'offer the best value-for-money products that are truly worth having'. With a population of 7.5 million, Hong Kong is a relatively small market, selling fewer than 40,000 cars annually. Still, its affluence and concentration of ultra-wealthy residents make it a lucrative market for premium brands. Some companies also consider the city a testing ground for self-driving technologies and a way to break into the global right-hand-drive market.

Chinese carmakers have refrained from offering steep discounts to align with Beijing's efforts to protect a vital industry, but an end to the prolonged price war remains elusive, as the sector grapples with overcapacity and weak consumer demand for high-ticket items. The average discount offered by mainland Chinese electric vehicle (EV) and petrol car manufacturers fell to 16.7 per cent last month from an unprecedented 17.4 per cent in June, according to a recent JPMorgan report. 'This is encouraging, as intense competition – especially after the Shanghai Auto Show in April – sent industry-wide discounts to a record high of over 17 per cent in May, June and early July, the highest since we started tracking pricing trends in China in 2017,' said Nick Lai, head of auto research in Asia-Pacific at JPMorgan. 'However, the root cause of the challenging price environment is overcapacity. We may need to be patient to see a sustainable [and] better price environment in the long term.'
