Knife by Salman Rushdie audiobook review – 27 seconds that changed everything
Knife is Rushdie's memoir of his 'near-death' in which he recalls seeing his attacker and thinking to himself: 'So it's you. Here you are.' The attack lasted 27 seconds and, to this day, the author remains bewildered that he didn't fight back. 'Was I so feeble that I couldn't make the slightest attempt to defend myself?' he asks. As baffling to him is that the man, a Lebanese-American whom he calls 'The A' (short for 'Assailant' or 'Ass'), had never read The Satanic Verses. Instead, he had watched clips of Rushdie lecturing on YouTube and concluded that he was 'disingenuous'.
A harrowing account of the before, during and after of a violent assault, Knife is given added power and immediacy in being narrated by Rushdie himself. His tone throughout moves between anger, resignation and dry humour. While he is unsparing with the details – for a while his eyeball, which could not be saved, lolled on his cheek like 'a large soft-boiled egg' – there are also outpourings of love for his friends, family and his wife, Rachel Eliza Griffiths. The ultimate intention in Knife is to reveal how love triumphs over cruelty and to 'answer violence with art'.

Jake Paul's next fight against pound-for-pound star on Netflix is revealed after talks with Anthony Joshua broke down
Jake Paul will take on Gervonta 'Tank' Davis on November 15th in an exhibition live on Netflix. The Youtuber-turned-boxer had been in talks over a possible showdown with Anthony Joshua but that has not materialised. Instead, Paul will be facing a smaller opponent in the 5ft 5in American on November 14. 'Tank' has never been defeated as a professional and has held the WBA lightweight title since 2003. The 30-year-old will be giving up a significant height and weight advantage against 6ft 1in Paul. Paul responded to confirmation of the fight on X by writing: 'Gervonta has been disrespecting my name for too long. 'His nickname might be Tank, but I'm an FPV drone and I'm about to disable tiny boy. Yes, he's 1 of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world, but my motto is anyone, anytime, anyplace, against all odds. The 5ft 5in Gervonta Davis will be the opponent for Paul, who stands at 6ft 1in 'And I like my odds. First, I am going to kill David, then I will go on to slaughter Goliath.' Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) and Netflix announced the fight, which will take place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Davis may be small of stature but packs a punch having knocked out twenty eight of his thirty one opponents to date. He is a controversial character, previously accused of domestic violence in 2023 by Vanessa Posso, who is the mother of Davis' daughter. Posso has since publicly withdrawn her abuse allegations. In July, he was arrested again on a domestic violence charge. As seen in jail records obtained by Daily Mail, Davis is now facing a battery charge after being arrested in the early hours of Friday, June 15 in Miami Beach, Florida. In his latest defense Davis retained the WBA lightweight title via a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. Prior to that result, he was No 8 in the pound-for-pound list and among the very best boxers in the world. His fight with Paul will not place that belt on the line and is purely an exhibition, following on from Paul's clash with Mike Tyson in November 2024. It remains to be seen whether the AJ fight will still materialise next year, though it appears Paul is confident. His reference to going on to 'slaughter Goliath' seems to clearly reference his intention to face the Brit, which would no doubt be his biggest and most dangerous challenge.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer's second fight in 2025 has been confirmed and social media sensation was quick to have his say online following the announcement Jake Paul has made his feelings clear after his showdown with lightweight champion Gervonta Davis was announced. The pair are expected to go head-to-head on November 15 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The news was posted on the official Netflix Turkiye X account before it was quickly taken down. Ring Magazine reporter Mike Coppinger later confirmed the news. In a post uploaded to X - formerly known as Twitter - he wrote: "Jake Paul will face Gervonta Davis on Nov. 15 at Atlanta's State Farm Arena in an exhibition on Netflix, sources confirm to @ringmagazine. Talks for Paul to face Anthony Joshua collapsed over network issues. Paul's last fight took place at 200 pounds while Davis is a champion at 135." The news quickly sent boxing fans into frenzy. And now, Paul has had his say. "Gervonta who has been disrespecting my name for too long," he wrote. "His nickname might be Tank, but I'm an FPV drone and I'm about to disable tiny boy. It seemed likely that Anthony Joshua and Paul were set to fight next year. The American has continuously called for a clash with 'AJ.' Earlier this month, Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn revealed there was a "very real" chance of the fight happening. As well as that, Paul's business partner Nakisa Bidarian confirmed that a fight looked set to take place in early 2026. "I think we're looking at it happening at the start of 2026. It's public that AJ was taking a little time away, I think he had a little surgery. So once he's ready, and once Jake is ready, we're going to squarely focus on that," he said. "It's a fight that Jake wants to do, and that's a discussion we've had at length, and he feels very confident about where he is in his career and his chances of upsetting Anthony Joshua." However, a fight between the pair fell through. Paul's opponent, Davis, was expected to rematch Lamont Roach after their controversial draw earlier this year, but the two teams have now seemingly moved on. So, I always saw so many holes in his game, to me it wasn't that surprising that someone finally gave him some good work."
