Knife by Salman Rushdie audiobook review – 27 seconds that changed everything
On 12 August 2022, Salman Rushdie was at a literary conference in Chautauqua, New York, about to deliver a lecture on keeping writers from harm, when a stranger rushed at him with a knife. Rushdie – who in 1989 had a fatwa issued against him by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini calling for his death, after the publication of his novel The Satanic Verses – was stabbed in his neck, chest, hand and eye.
Knife is Rushdie's memoir of his 'near-death' in which he recalls seeing his attacker and thinking to himself: 'So it's you. Here you are.' The attack lasted 27 seconds and, to this day, the author remains bewildered that he didn't fight back. 'Was I so feeble that I couldn't make the slightest attempt to defend myself?' he asks. As baffling to him is that the man, a Lebanese-American whom he calls 'The A' (short for 'Assailant' or 'Ass'), had never read The Satanic Verses. Instead, he had watched clips of Rushdie lecturing on YouTube and concluded that he was 'disingenuous'.
A harrowing account of the before, during and after of a violent assault, Knife is given added power and immediacy in being narrated by Rushdie himself. His tone throughout moves between anger, resignation and dry humour. While he is unsparing with the details – for a while his eyeball, which could not be saved, lolled on his cheek like 'a large soft-boiled egg' – there are also outpourings of love for his friends, family and his wife, Rachel Eliza Griffiths. The ultimate intention in Knife is to reveal how love triumphs over cruelty and to 'answer violence with art'.

For the first time in the history of the Call of Duty series, we'll be getting two consecutive entries in a sub-series, as Black Ops 7 has been announced for release in 2026 In a groundbreaking move for the Call of Duty franchise, Activision has revealed that for the first time, we'll see back-to-back annual releases of Black Ops. Activision has unveiled its plans for Call of Duty 2026, and to everyone's astonishment, it's Black Ops 7. The publisher usually rotates its studios between different series – with Black Ops and Modern Warfare being the focus for the past few years alongside Warzone battle royale – and typically releases them every other year. Despite last year's release being Black Ops 6, which would normally mean a hiatus until 2027, Activision has decided to buck the trend. The announcement of Black Ops 7 was made at SGF 2025 during the Xbox Games Showcase, and this time around, the game is set to catapult players into the future, specifically to the year 2035, which is 40 years on from the events of Black Ops 6. It's been quite some time since gamers have had the chance to engage with futuristic warfare technology; the last occasions were in Black Ops 3 and Black Ops 4, set in 2065 and the 2040s respectively. In a press statement detailing the backdrop of Black Ops 7, Activision stated, "The year is 2035 and the world is on the brink of chaos, ravaged by violent conflict and psychological warfare following the events of Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6. Wielding cutting-edge technology, David Mason and his team must fight back against a manipulative enemy who weaponizes fear above all else." Regarding the successive Black Ops releases, Call of Duty general manager Matt Cox said, "The Black Ops universe is amazing. The creativity and imagination that goes into the storytelling, the rich character depth, and the incredible moment-to-moment gameplay across all modes is really exceptional. As a team, our vision from the start was to create a back-to-back series experience for our players that embraced the uniqueness of the Black Ops sub-franchise."
