Zahid: Strengthen agriculture sector through TVET

The Star6 days ago
KUALA KUBU BHARU: The country's agricultural industry needs to be strengthened through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to reduce dependence on food imports, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He stated that the move was crucial to ensuring food security, including in the dairy sector, to meet the domestic market's needs.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said that the National TVET Council was prepared to channel assistance and collaborate with agricultural training institutions nationwide to implement the initiative, particularly through high-tech courses aimed at attracting the interest of young people.
"The existing modules are good, but in my view, integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) and modern teaching pedagogy into TVET is essential.
'Learning should comprise only 30% classroom sessions, with the remaining 70% conducted in the field to give students real-world exposure to agriculture," said Ahmad Zahid, who is also National TVET Council chairman.
He said this at a press conference after opening the groundbreaking ceremony of the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation's (PKPS) "Ehsan Dairy Farm" Dairy Cattle Complex here on Sunday (Aug 10). – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Malaysian lawmakers will be required to join the Civil Defence Force (APM) in their constituencies from next year, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today. According to Utusan Malaysia, he said MPs must also set aside part of their constituency funds to buy uniforms for APM personnel. 'APM is among the nation's second line of defence after the Armed Forces and police,' Ahmad Zahid told reporters after attending a Civil Defence Students' Corps (Kor Sispa) commissioning ceremony in Shah Alam. The event, officiated by Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, saw 918 cadets from universities and teacher training institutes nationwide commissioned as second lieutenants. Ahmad Zahid said student participation in uniformed units such as APM helps build discipline and resilience. He added that the Prime Minister's Department is considering allowances for cadets.

Selangor disburses RM864,000 in second phase of rental aid for Putra Heights fire victims

SHAH ALAM, Aug 15 — The Selangor government has disbursed RM864,000 in the second phase of temporary rental assistance to 144 households affected by last year's gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya. State Housing and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Borhan Aman Shah said the payments, covering July to September 2025, were credited on Aug 6 through the Selangor Housing and Property Board (LPHS). He said recipient selection followed a data review conducted by the Petaling District Disaster Management Committee, Victim Data Subcommittee and local community representatives. 'The list was updated based on factors such as homes already repaired, former tenants who have relocated or those no longer needing assistance,' he said in a statement. Borhan added that the aid aims to ease the burden on affected families as they navigate relocation or home repairs, and urged remaining eligible victims to claim their assistance at the Petaling District and Land Office for further verification. In the first phase of the programme, covering April to June, a total of RM2.19 million was disbursed to 365 households. — Bernama
