Eight babies have been born in Britain using a new three-person IVF technique designed to prevent hereditary diseases

Eight babies have been born in the UK thanks to a groundbreaking three-person IVF technique to prevent devastating disease.
Four boys and four girls, including one set of identical twins, have been delivered and are all doing well following treatment by a team in Newcastle, who pioneered the technique.
One other woman is currently pregnant.
The scientific method, known as mitochondrial donation treatment, is designed to prevent children from being born with devastating mitochondrial diseases that are passed down from their mothers.
These illnesses can be fatal and often cause devastating damage to organs including the brain, muscle, liver, heart and kidney.
Of the eight babies born, three are now aged under six months, two are aged six to 12 months, one is 12 to 18 months old, one is aged 18 to 24 months and one child is aged over two.
All the babies are healthy and are meeting their milestones, according to the team from Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Newcastle University and Newcastle Fertility Centre.
None of the eight babies shows signs of having mitochondrial DNA disease, which tends to affect around one in 5,000 births.
The scientists said disease-causing mitochondrial DNA mutations, picked up in three of the children, are either undetectable or present at levels that are very unlikely to cause disease.
The main lab method used by the team, known as pronuclear transfer (PNT), involves taking the egg from an affected mother, sperm from her partner and an egg from a donor who is free from disease.
The mother of a baby girl born through mitochondrial donation said: 'As parents, all we ever wanted was to give our child a healthy start in life.
'Mitochondrial donation IVF made that possible. After years of uncertainty, this treatment gave us hope - and then it gave us our baby.
'We look at them now, full of life and possibility, and we're overwhelmed with gratitude. Science gave us a chance.'
The mother of a baby boy added: 'We are now proud parents to a healthy baby, a true mitochondrial replacement success. This breakthrough has lifted the heavy cloud of fear that once loomed over us.
'Thanks to this incredible advancement and the support we received, our little family is complete.
'The emotional burden of mitochondrial disease has been lifted, and in its place is hope, joy, and deep gratitude.'
Professor Sir Doug Turnbull, from Newcastle University and part of the team of researchers, said: 'Mitochondrial disease can have a devastating impact on families.
'Today's news offers fresh hope to many more women at risk of passing on this condition who now have the chance to have children growing up without this terrible disease.'
In all the cases, the Newcastle team used the PNT technique after the egg was fertilised.
For this, scientists transplanted the nuclear genome (which contains all the genes essential for a person's characteristics, such as hair colour and height) from the egg carrying the mitochondrial DNA mutation into an egg donated by an unaffected woman that had had its nuclear genome removed.
Thanks to the procedure, the resulting baby inherits its parents' nuclear DNA, but the mitochondrial DNA is mainly inherited from the donated egg.
Scientific progress in this area led Parliament to change the law in 2015 to permit mitochondrial donation treatment.
Two years later, the Newcastle clinic became the first and only national centre licensed to perform it, with the first cases approved in 2018.
Approval is given on a case-by-case basis by the UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).
The new findings on the eight births, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, show that all the babies are developing normally.
Aged 18 months, tests are carried out in areas such as gross motor skills, fine motor skills, cognitive and social development and language skills to check the babies are hitting milestones.
The researchers will also check the children when they are aged five.
Professor Bobby McFarland, director of the NHS Highly Specialised Service for Rare Mitochondrial Disorders at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said he was confident the children would carry on developing normally.
He added: 'If we're not picking up subtle signs of problems at five, then we're really very clear that is not going to be a problem.'
He added: 'In my work...I see children in intensive care units up and down this country and that's not pleasant.
'It's very difficult for families to deal with these diseases, they are devastating...
'To see babies born at the end of this is just amazing really.'
Mary Herbert, professor of reproductive biology at Newcastle University, added: 'PNT happens in the small hours of the morning - those long nights. And it has paid off.
'It's fair to say it's rewarding. In science though, periods of joy are fleeting and brief because you're always thinking what is the next challenge? How do we optimise it further?'
She said the slight DNA mutations seen in three of the children are 'way, way below the threshold that would cause disease'.
Peter Thompson, chief executive of the HFEA, said: 'Ten years ago, the UK was the first country in the world to licence mitochondrial donation treatment to avoid passing the condition to children.
'For the first time, families with severe inherited mitochondrial illness have the possibility of a healthy child.
'Although it's still early days, it is wonderful news that mitochondrial donation treatment has led to eight babies being born.
'Only people who are at a very high risk of passing a serious mitochondrial disease onto their children are eligible for this treatment in the UK, and every application for mitochondrial donation treatment is individually assessed in accordance with the law.'
Dr Andy Greenfield, from the University of Oxford, said: 'It is a triumph of scientific innovation in the IVF clinic - a world-first that shows that the UK is an excellent environment in which to push boundaries in IVF; a tour de force by the embryologists who painstakingly developed and optimised the micromanipulation methods; an example of the value of clinical expertise, developed over decades of working with children and adults suffering from these devastating diseases, being used to support a new intervention and subsequent follow-up, potentially for many years.'
Beth Thompson, executive director for policy and partnerships at Wellcome, said: 'This is a remarkable scientific achievement, which has been years in the making.
'The pioneering work behind mitochondrial donation is a powerful example of how discovery research can change lives.'
Professor Dagan Wells, from the University of Oxford, said the study showed established methods for avoiding mitochondrial DNA diseases, such as preimplantation genetic testing, perform well and will be suitable for most women at risk of having an affected child.
'A minority of patients are unable to produce any embryos free of mitochondrial disease, and for those women the study provides hope that they may be able to have healthy children in the future,' he added.

Ian Huxley was fun and confident until he finished four tours in the Middle East. The ten years that have followed have seen him passed from "pillar to post," ITV News Correspondent Geraint Vincent reports To military medics, Ian Huxley's symptoms must have seemed all too familiar. After two tours of Iraq and two of Afghanistan, he had trouble sleeping, was drinking heavily and was quick to anger. He felt depressed and reported intrusive thoughts and emotions. The diagnosis was Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a psychiatric condition that can occur in response to distressing or threatening experiences and affects 9% of veterans of the "War on Terror". But when Ian did not respond to normal treatments, he was discharged from the army into the care of the NHS. Still, his PTSD diagnosis stuck. Life since has been tough. Ian has tried to work but lost several jobs due to his symptoms. He has separated from his wife, been sectioned and attempted suicide. "I get panic attacks, I freeze and get hot and cold sweats. "Even doing something like going to the shops, I need to see the exit all the time... if I can't see it, I start flapping and freaking out and then the anxiety goes up and you get to the point like I'd rather not eat than do the shop," he said. "I get headaches, blurred vision, really severe headaches. I had one the other night and it wiped me out for five hours. "I just had to be in a dark room on my own. Really, really intense and painful... I'm always ill as well, from lack of sleep, always ill." "I've been suffering now for ten plus years. "I've been through the NHS, passed from pillar to post. I've been on a number of medications and nothing ever works. I still feel just as angry, just as got to the point like this feels normal to me now," he added. Over the last decade, Ian has seen 29 doctors and scores of other healthcare professionals; his medical records run to over 700 pages. But it was friends, not doctors, who suggested he might have blast-related mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), a condition where repeated exposure to blast causes cumulative damage to the brain, resulting in severe neurological problems. Explosions create a wave of 'overpressure', a spike in the surrounding air pressure above normal atmospheric levels caused by a blast wave. Pound per square inch (PSI) is the unit of measurement used to quantify the amount of overpressure in a specific area. 1 PSI would be enough to cause window glass to shatter, whilst a PSI of 20 would likely cause a concrete building to collapse. Nato allies widely assume that any overpressure above 4 PSI can damage the brain. Several weapon systems used by the British Army appear to breach that threshold, meaning the soldiers who fire them are particularly at risk. Ian was never visibly injured in combat, but he was exposed to blasts throughout his service, particularly in Afghanistan. Symptoms of blast-related TBI overlap with those of PTSD, but there are other signs too, many of which Ian displayed: severe headaches, visual disturbances, sensitivity to noise and light, short-term memory loss and a sense of personality change. "Who I am today and who I was then are two completely different people. "Back then, I was fun, outgoing, I loved sport, loved running, I was just fun, young, confident, cocky, a typical squaddie, I suppose. "It upsets me because of who I was for my older ones, they remember daddy being fun, outgoing, quirky, laughing and joking all the time, full of energy. "My younger children... see an angry man at times, they feel 'why is daddy getting upset' or 'why can't he take me to the park today, it's not like he's doing anything' and you just, the lack of motivation, you are just constantly mentally exhausted and physically exhausted and the thoughts that go through your head, the constant self-doubt of am I good enough? " Ian contacted ITV News after seeing our previous reports on blast TBI and offered to undergo a brain scan to see if his PTSD diagnosis was responsible for his symptoms or whether there was something else his doctors had missed. The damage caused by repeated blasts is widespread, but so small that it does not show up on normal head scans. However, an innovative medical software company has now developed an algorithm that compares MRI scans to a database of thousands of "normal" brains, highlighting previously undetectable areas of damage. Innovision IP CEO, Peter Schwabach, told us: "A lot of the symptoms of psychological damage like PTSD are very similar to the ones of brain injury, and what tends to happen is in the absence of images which show damage, all patients are put into the psychological basket. "Some of them may have PTSD, but many people will have an organic injury... so this could really help doctors make an accurate diagnosis." When Ian's results came back, they were stark. His scan showed clear signs of physical trauma: damage to several of the brain's network connections, consistent with injury. Parts of his cortex were visibly thinned and many neurons had lost their vital insulation - changes that signal a loss of mental function. All this in a man just 39 years old, with no recorded head injury. To neurologist Dr Steven Allder, however, the scans tell a depressing but familiar story. Ian is the latest of several veterans he has seen with these patterns of damage. He described seeing each person as like "picking up the same set of notes every time" and said "there is a real problem." "They're all veterans, they've all been deployed in the same place, and now they've got this very consistent constellation of symptoms which is sufficiently complicated that someone needs to take ownership of it. "And until we do that, the patient and the families are going to just feel like they do, which is that they just get passed from pillar to post with no explanation. "A little bit of intervention here, potentially a drug there, but it doesn't make any difference really." The scale of the issue is hard to pin down, but Dr Allder said the people he works with are worried about hundreds of people. The Ministry of Defence has provided funding for research into the diagnosis and prognosis of blast-related TBI, and a variety of cutting-edge scientific studies are underway. It says it recognises the urgent clinical need to address the complexities of diagnosis arising from the overlapping symptoms of TBI and PTSD. Campaigners say all research is welcome, but there is already sufficient scientific knowledge to justify urgent action to help veterans who are suffering now and they also call for the government and NHS to do more.

A major UK supplier of menopause drug HRT has been sanctioned after whistleblowers claimed patients were being put at risk, it has emerged. A group of employees from Theramex, which supplies HRT treatments to millions of patients in the UK, wrote a letter to the pharmaceutical regulator Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry over allegations the company was not following regulatory standards and may 'jeopardise' patient safety. The whistleblowers claimed some products featured inaccurate prescribing information and failed to highlight common side effects. They claimed they had been forced to contact the regulator after their attempts to raise issues internally were brushed off. The company has now admitted it breached regulatory codes, amounting to 'bringing discredit upon, and reducing confidence in the pharmaceutical industry', according to an interim case report from the ABPI. It also failed to maintain high standards and provide accurate and up-to-date prescribing information, the report said. Theramex is a global pharmaceutical company specialising in women's health products, such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and fertility treatments. Theramex UK is its London-based arm. It supplies common HRT therapies including Evorel, Bijuve and Intrarosa. From April to June 2025, there were 760,000 prescriptions of Evorel and 2,748 prescriptions of Bijuve, according to data from the NHS Business Services Authority. In 2023-24, there were 2.8 million prescriptions of Evorel. One employee wrote the complaint on behalf of a group, according to the complaint published by the Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority, which is part of the ABPI. The complaint, filed in October 2024, said: 'We are a group of employees from various cross-functional teams at Theramex, and we are writing to express our growing concerns regarding the company's adherence to regulatory standards and the accountability of its leadership. 'While we have attempted to escalate these issues internally on numerous occasions, there has been a consistent lack of action or meaningful response, which leaves us with no choice but to seek external guidance and support.' The complaint alleged that some of Theramex's products, such as Intrarosa and Evorel, had not had their prescribing information updated. In the case of Evorel, information for health professionals was 'incomplete' and did not include information on common side effects such as uterine spasms and vaginal infection, the letter claimed. For another drug, the letter alleged that prescribing information had not been updated for five years. The complaint warned: 'This oversight can lead to healthcare professionals (HCPs) not being fully informed of potential risks, which could jeopardise patient safety.' The PMCPA panel found Theramix's 'failure to provide accurate and complete prescribing information was unacceptable'. The employees also alleged the company failed to comply with regulators for clinical trial compliance warning. 'The lack of resources within Theramex's global headquarters to ensure compliance with these standards is alarming,' it said. Finally, the letter alleged the company has a 'blame culture' that was 'deeply concerning.' In response to the complaint, Theramex UK said it took its obligations under the ABPI code of practice 'very seriously' and launched an internal investigation. It said that, although it had a process to update prescribing information, this was not sufficiently robust to ensure prescribing information was immediately updated. The pharma company acknowledged it did not meet standards concerning this allegation and admitted that, at the time of the complaint, it did not have a process in place for clinical studies. The employees' letter claimed it had tried to escalate matters to senior leaders within Theramex. The company claimed it was not aware of any of the matters having been escalated internally prior to them being reported to the regulator. As part of the sanction, Theramex must provide written confirmation that it will cease practices that breach codes, pay a charge and advertise details of the case. Theramex UK said it 'absolutely acknowledges' the recent ruling and 'respects the [regulator's] decision'. 'Of course, we remain fully committed to ensuring our practices align with the highest ethical standards and necessary steps and corrective measures have been taken,' it said.

The condition is called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, 'a brain disorder that can affect brain-related abilities, including thinking and concentrating, memory, movement and more,' the Cleveland Clinic says. 'I know a lot of people are worried about me and my health, but I'm OK,' Joel said in an interview with People magazine. "What I have is something very few people know about, including me, no matter how much you try to research it. I'm doing my best to work with it and to recover from it.' 'It was scary, but I'm OK,' Joel, 76, says. 'I just wanted to let people know, don't worry about me being deathly ill or anything.' He also discussed his health in an episode of comedian Bill Maher 's Club Random podcast, telling the host he feels 'fine," adding that, 'My balance sucks. It's like being on a boat... They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling." He added that his health issues are not 'fixed,' but 'it's still being worked on.' A representative for Joel declined additional comment. In March, the 'Uptown Girl' singer announced that he underwent surgery and had to undergo physical therapy. A statement at the time said doctors expected him to make a full recovery. It is unclear if his medical issues at the time were related to Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. The condition can cause problems with walking, bladder control and thinking, with symptoms worsening if left untreated. It's relatively rare and can be hard to diagnose. It can be treated successfully with surgery to install a tube to drain excess fluid. Patients may need physical therapy in addition to surgery.
