US FDA approves Moderna's next-generation COVID-19 vaccine for adults 65 or older
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved Moderna's next-generation COVID-19 vaccine for everyone aged 65 and above, the company said on Saturday, the first endorsement since the regulator tightened requirements.
The vaccine has also been approved for people aged 12 to 64 with at least one or more underlying risk factors, Moderna said in a statement.
The Department of Health and Human Services, under the leadership of long-time vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr., is increasing regulatory scrutiny on vaccines.
The FDA said on May 20 it planned to require drugmakers to test their COVID booster shots against an inert placebo in healthy adults under 65 for approval, effectively limiting them to older adults and those at risk of developing severe illness.
The Moderna vaccine, branded mNEXSPIKE, can be stored in refrigerators rather than freezers, to offer longer shelf life and make distribution easier, especially in developing countries where supply-chain issues could hamper vaccination drives.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which Kennedy also oversees, said on Thursday that COVID vaccines remain an option for healthy children when parents and doctors agree that it is needed, stopping short of Kennedy's announcement days earlier that the agency would remove the shots from its immunization schedule.

But he said that Trump believed in raising concerns and 'the Indian government is addressing it specifically and directly.'

NEW YORK: FIFA's billion-dollar gamble to revolutionize club football begins a week on Sunday with plenty of cash up for grabs but questionable enthusiasm as 32 teams prepare to contest the expanded Club World Cup in 12 stadiums across the United States. The tournament — designed as a glittering showcase ahead of the 2026 World Cup — has had to contend with the prospect of empty seats along with controversial qualification rules and player welfare concerns after an exhausting European season. Lionel Messi's Inter Miami face Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahli in the opening fixture on June 15 at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, with tickets still widely available days before kickoff. A glance at FIFA's website shows lots of tickets available, including for the July 13 final at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. Messi's presence underscores the tournament's contentious foundations. But this largesse has not quelled concerns about player welfare, with the global players union FIFPro taking legal action against FIFA over a tournament that further compresses the precious recovery time between gruelling seasons. Saudi Arabia deploys drones to deliver medicine to pilgrims during Hajj
MAKKAH: Saudi authorities will use drones to deliver medicines and other medical supplies to patients during the upcoming Hajj season, the Kingdom's Ministry of Health said on Monday, cutting delivery times from an average of one hour to just six minutes. The initiative, covering a network of more 136 locations at several sites, will be able to provide more than 2,000 types of medicines and other medical supplies, the Saudi Press Agency reported. Minister of Health Fahad Al-Jalajel, who is also the chairman of NUPCO, the medical supplies and logistical services company that will operate the deliveries, inspected the business's fleet of drones and helicopters on Monday at a facility located near Mount Arafat, a key holy site for pilgrims during Hajj. The drone technology will help safeguard the health and safety of pilgrims, and ensure the speedy delivery of medicines and other medical supplies during Hajj, according to officials. NUPCO said it will deploy its drones at six major medical centers in Mina, Muzdalifah and Mount Arafat. These locations will welcome nearly 1.25 million Muslim pilgrims during Hajj, which begins on June 4 and continues until June 9. NUPCO has also supplied smart bracelets that will monitor the health of security personnel while they are on duty during Hajj.
