CNN's 'Artisans' explores how the millennium-old Japanese craft of woodworking is being preserved in the 21st century
HONG KONG, Nov. 12, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- CNN's 'Artisans' meets the dedicated craftspeople who hope to preserve the traditional art of woodworking, where Japanese heritage and innovation coexist in harmony, for generations to come.
Osaka's Danjiri festivals are thrilling processions where hundreds of men haul intricately handcrafted wooden floats through city streets at breakneck speed. Though sometimes dangerous, it is a great honor for both participants and the craftspeople who spend years carving elaborate myths and magical creatures into the wood. CNN meets Akihiko Maeda, an Osaka-born artisan dedicated to preserving this craft by training young artisans and collaborating with foreign designers to create contemporary pieces.
In Kyoto, Buddhist sculptor Yozan Miura has found a unique way to merge his faith with his craft. Miura places his sculptures on drones where, during prayer services, they are programmed to descend in formation, to bring to life a Buddhist teaching about the arrival of the Amida Buddha to welcome the spirits of the dead. He still carves the original designs out of traditional Japanese cypress, but to make the statues light enough for flight, he digitally scans his wood-carved designs and 3D-prints hollow resin replicas just a few inches tall.
A miyadaiku, or temple carpenter, is responsible for maintaining Japan's temples and shrines, while also renowned for producing some of the world's longest-surviving wooden structures. In Osaka, Kojiro Kitada, a trained miyadaiku, has mastered the art of carving from a single block of wood, a skill he now applies to crafting furniture in his studio. One hour west of Osaka, Yuriko Tokunaga, a second-generation woodworker, is reviving the traditional technique of finishing wood with a kanna, or Japanese plane, rather than the sandpaper typically used in modern furniture-making. Tokunaga believes using a kanna allows her to connect more deeply with the material and to feel the life story of the rare, locally grown trees. Together, these artisans are bringing Japan's ancient woodworking traditions to contemporary furniture design.
Finally, the classical Japanese theater, Noh, performed since the 14th century, is getting an update. The skill of carving and painting the distinctive wooden masks worn by Noh performers was historically passed down from father to son. But today, female artisans are at the vanguard of the craft, like Kanagawa-based playwright, Lilico Aso, who carved a series of masks reimagining pop stars like Rihanna and Ariana Grande as mythical goddesses from Noh dramas, while Shuko Nakamura uses paper and modelling clay to create fantastical, sometimes comically oversized designs. These mask-makers are helping preserve one of the world's oldest surviving theatrical arts, while challenging Noh's traditionally conservative culture.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — The owner of an iconic nightclub in the Dominican Republic whose roof collapsed in April and killed 236 people was arrested Thursday along with his sister. Antonio Espaillat and Maribel Espaillat have not been charged in the case , although authorities have 48 hours to present any charges before a judge. 'Both defendants displayed immense irresponsibility and negligence by failing to physically intervene to prevent the club's roof from collapsing, as it ultimately did, causing 236 deaths and more than 180 injuries,' the Dominican Republic's Attorney General's Office said in a statement. Prosecutors accused the Espaillats of trying to intimidate or manipulate company employees, adding that they could serve as witnesses in the case. Antonio Espaillat is considered a powerful businessman in the Dominican Republic; he owns upscale entertainment centers and dozens of local radio stations. Miguel Valerio, the Espaillats' attorney, told reporters that he expects to have access to the prosecutors' evidence in upcoming days. 'This is a involuntary homicide,' he said. 'Nobody wanted that to happen.' The Espaillats were arrested after being interrogated for several hours. Altanto TV, a local digital news channel, posted an interview with a man they identified as former Jet Set employee Gregory Adamés. The channel said he gave prosecutors videos and conversations with Antonio Espaillat in which he warned that the April 7 party shouldn't be held because the roof could collapse. Adamés said in a video posted on Instagram that he would hold the Espaillat family responsible if he disappears or is shot or involved in an accident. 'If something happens to me, it's clear where it came from,' he said. 'My intention is not to hurt anyone, only that the truth be known.' A government-appointed committee that includes international experts is still investigating what caused the roof to collapse. Crews worked for 53 hours nonstop after arriving on the scene in Santo Domingo shortly after midnight on April 8, rescuing 189 survivors. The victims included beloved singer Rubby Pérez , who was performing when the roof caved in, and Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province and sister of seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz. Also killed was former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel , who was pulled from the debris but died in hospital, and Dominican baseball player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera. Other victims include a retired U.N. official, New York-based fashion designer Martín Polanco, an Army captain who left behind four young girls, and three employees at Grupo Popular, a financial services company, including the president of AFP Popular Bank and his wife. The relatives of several survivors have filed lawsuits against Antonio Espaillat. The club, which had operated for nearly five decades, was known for its Monday night merengue parties that attracted international celebrities and high-profile Dominicans. Error! Candace Cameron Bure Says Horror Films Can Open ‘Portal' That Is ‘Incredibly Demonic'
Candace Cameron Bure seems fully convinced that horror films can open 'a portal.' The 'Full House' alum has frequently espoused her Christian values publicly, including her preference for a meek and 'submissive' role in marriage, but went a little further afield this week by arguing that television can 'let stuff inside' the home that is 'demonic.' The actor presented her personal 'portal' theory on Tuesday's episode of 'The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast' and admitted that her kids — Lev, Natasha and Maksim — mock her for it 'all the time.' Social media users who heard her out are currently doing the same. 'Like if you're watching this, or you're playing this video game, or whatever, that's a portal that could let stuff inside our home,' said Bure on the podcast. 'I don't even want someone watching a scary movie in our house on the TV, because to me, that's just a portal.' The actor reminded viewers that she's in the film industry and understands how movies are made, but nonetheless argued there can still be 'something incredibly demonic' to the results, which her guest, Texas-based pastor Jonathan Pokluda, audibly agreed with. Bure's philosophy appears to extend even to everyday products, such as water. 'I feel like it's a portal that gets opened up, and that just reminded me, you've posted something a while back about Liquid Death,' she told Pokluda. 'You're like, 'Do you want to buy a product that is literally being cursed as it's going out into distribution?'' The pastor shared such sentiments on social media earlier this year, declaring that he is 'super out' on the beverage company for a marketing campaign cheekily asking customers to 'sell your soul' to join its 'Liquid Death Country Club.' Dua Lipa has said she is too busy to have children as she does not know how starting a family 'would fit in with my job'. Speaking in an interview with British Vogue, the London-born singer, 29, said she wondered if there would 'ever be a good time' to have a child with her fiancé Callum Turner, the Boys in the Boat actor. 'I'd love to have kids one day,' Lipa said. 'But it's like the constant question of when would there ever be a good time – how it would fit in with my job and how it would work if I went on tour, and how much time out I'd have to take. 'I think it's just one of those things that's going to happen when it happens. I love kids, but I think there's so much more to raising a child than just loving children.'
