MOH Closely Monitoring New US Tariffs, Focusing On Medical Devices, Pharmaceutical Products
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said that although Trump had previously indicated an intention to exempt pharmaceuticals from these tariffs, recent developments suggest otherwise.
"Some of the announced tariffs remain unclear, and with Trump's unpredictability, we must remain vigilant. It is crucial for me, as the Minister of Health, to stay attentive to these two matters,' he told a press conference after opening the state-level 2025 MADANI Afiat Programme in Tunjong here today.
He was responding to questions about the potential impact of the US tariffs on the nation's healthcare supply chain.
Dr Dzulkefly said the ministry was also making early preparations to find alternative markets and sources to ensure the continuity of the country's health supply is not affected.
On April 2, Trump announced a series of reciprocal tariffs imposed on many countries, including 24 per cent on imports of goods from Malaysia, but this has now been postponed for 90 days.
Meanwhile, regarding the ban on the sale of electronic cigarette (vape) products by the Terengganu government effective Aug 1, he said the ministry was determined to implement comprehensive regulation on vape products with the gazette of the Smoking Products Control for Public Health Act 2024.
He said the act, which functions as a stand-alone legislation, would serve as a strong foundation for regulating all aspects related to smoking products, including their registration, sales, advertising, and nicotine content.
"Our approach is to enforce strict regulation. Sales to minors will be completely prohibited, and stringent controls will be in place to ensure there is no room for any form of leniency," he said.

'They work for a company, which name I can't reveal, and we're looking into why it was set up,' Azam said, adding that they believed that both the suspects acted as enablers by leaking information to the syndicate. The MACC had arrested five senior armed forces officers on Wednesday for allegedly leaking military operation information to smugglers and colluding with a syndicate to smuggle in contraband, including drugs and cigarettes, estimated to be worth RM5 million a month. Meanwhile, Azam said during his speech at the close of KOMAWAR that it was organised not only to provide exposure and education on corruption and integrity but to instill values and build character among university students. West Virginia governor to deploy National Guard troops to US capital

The deployment is "a show of commitment to public safety and regional cooperation" and will include providing equipment and specialized training alongside the "approximately 300-400 skilled personnel as directed," Morrisey's office said in a statement. Drew Galang, a spokesperson for Morrisey, said the state's National Guard received the order to send equipment and personnel to D.C. late on Friday and was working to organize the deployment. Earlier this week, President Donald Trump said he was deploying hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington and temporarily taking over the city's police department to curb what he depicted as a crime and homelessness emergency in the nation's capital. A White House official said on Saturday that more National Guard troops would be called in to Washington to "protect federal assets, create a safe environment for law enforcement officials to carry out their duties when required, and provide a visible presence to deter crime." A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said a formal order was expected to go out that would authorize National Guard troops in D.C. to carry firearms. The official said this order would affect mostly military police officers with sidearms. Reuters has previously reported that the National Guard troops would have weapons nearby, such as in their vehicles. The White House said on Saturday that D.C. National Guard members have conducted patrols on foot and in vehicles around the National Mall and Union Station. NEGOTIATED DEAL According to U.S. Justice Department data, violent crime in 2024 hit a 30-year low in Washington, technically a self-governing federal district under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Congress. District of Columbia officials and the Trump administration negotiated a deal on Friday to keep D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's appointed police chief, Pamela Smith, in charge of the police department after D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb filed a lawsuit to block the federal takeover of the department. Trump, a Republican who has suggested he could take similar actions in other Democratic-controlled cities, has sought to expand the powers of the presidency in his second term, inserting himself into the affairs of major banks, law firms and elite universities. It is not clear how the administration could deploy National Guard troops elsewhere. A federal judge in San Francisco is expected in the coming weeks to issue a ruling on whether Trump violated the law by deploying National Guard troops to Los Angeles in June without the approval of California Governor Gavin Newsom. 2nd measles death reported in Israel amid surging cases
JERUSALEM, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- An 18-month-old Israeli boy died of measles on Saturday at Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Medical Center, marking the second fatality in the country's current measles outbreak, Israel's Health Ministry said in a statement. The toddler was unvaccinated, it noted. The first death, a two-year-old Israeli boy also unvaccinated, took place on Wednesday at Jerusalem's Hadassah Medical Center. Since the outbreak began in early April, 526 measles cases have been confirmed, including 209 active infections, the ministry said, noting that there are 19 hospitalized patients under age six, including a one-year-old girl on ECMO support. The ministry urged parents to ensure that their children are vaccinated according to the national schedule, which includes one dose at 12 months of age and a second one in the first grade. Measles is a highly contagious viral illness marked by fever, nausea, a runny nose, and a rash. In some cases, it can lead to severe and life-threatening complications.
