Aspergillus Fumigatus is now being detected with increasing frequency in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia and California.
Health experts are raising concerns over the rapid spread of a deadly airborne fungus, Aspergillus fumigatus, across parts of the United States. The pathogen, which causes a potentially fatal lung infection called aspergillosis, poses a heightened threat as rising temperatures create ideal conditions for its growth, experts warned.
The fungus is now being detected with increasing frequency in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia and California- states where warm and humid environments allow it to thrive- Daily Mail reported. The World Health Organization labeled Aspergillus fumigatus a 'critical priority" pathogen, citing its growing resistance to treatment and high mortality rates.
What Is Aspergillus Fumigatus And Its Symptoms?
Once inhaled, the fungus can lead to serious respiratory infections, particularly in people with weakened immune systems or pre-existing lung conditions. Symptoms can escalate rapidly, potentially resulting in organ failure or death, especially among cancer patients, transplant recipients and those recovering from severe influenza. Individuals undergoing chemotherapy, long-term corticosteroid therapy or AIDS patients are considered especially vulnerable. The fungus is commonly found in soil, compost piles and damp environments, where it can survive temperatures as high as 120°F.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued precautionary advice to reduce the risk of exposure to Aspergillus fumigatus. While these measures cannot guarantee full protection, they are recommended- especially for those with weakened immune systems or existing respiratory conditions, the health body said.
The CDC advises people to avoid dusty areas such as construction sites. If exposure is unavoidable, wearing an N95 mask is recommended. During outdoor activities like gardening, individuals should wear long-sleeved clothing, full-length pants and closed-toe shoes and ideally avoid direct contact with soil or compost. In case of any cuts or abrasions, the area should be washed immediately with soap and water to reduce the risk of infection.

Significant number of cancer drugs don't fall within price control mechanisms, says report

A substantial number of cancer drugs are beyond the ambit of current price control mechanisms, the 163rd report of the Committee on Petitions observed earlier this week in its report of recommendations placed in Parliament. With the notification of the National List of Essential Medicines 2022, the number of anti-cancer medicines under price control increased from 40 in 2011 to 63 in 2022. Nevertheless, a significant number of oncology medications are not included under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO), 2013, and are thus not subject to any statutory price ceiling, the report said. 'This regulatory non-inclusion has led to excessive and often unaffordable pricing, thereby limiting access for a large section of the patient population,'' it said. The government should undertake urgent measures to expand the scope of the DPCO to include the widest possible range of cancer drugs, the Committee on Petitions has recommended in its report. Additionally, regular and comprehensive market assessments should be instituted to monitor prevailing drug prices and availability trends, it said. The quality of generics available in the country should be monitored and sustained since many medical professionals hesitate to prescribe generics as they are not certified under the World Health Organization's Good Manufacturing Practices, the report said. While provisions exist for accelerated access to new cancer drugs, the report said, regulatory delays, insufficient domestic R&D, and pricing constraints limit timely and equitable access. 'Domestic research infrastructure should be enhanced, value-based approvals prioritised, regulatory pathways should be streamlined, and measures should be taken to support indigenous development of novel oncology therapies. The committee also recommends that the government must encourage research in the private sector and pharmaceutical companies should be encouraged to invest in high level research in oncology,'' the report saidy. There seemed to be a lack of synergy between private sector medical institutions and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on the procedures for approval of clinical trials in the country, report said. Therefore, the committee recommended in its report, there should be collaboration between the two so that the maximum outcomes can be gained for the larger benefit of patients. Platforms, including the India Cancer Research Consortium, should be mandated to publish annual performance and progress reports, including documentation of the extent to which research outputs have translated into clinical practice. 'Mechanisms to systematically track patient outcomes and evaluate the cost-effectiveness of adopted treatment guidelines must also be instituted to support evidence-based policymaking,'' the report said.

DC airport on high alert after traveler diagnosed with world's most contagious disease. What steps should you follow?

A potential measles outbreak at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia has caused widespread concern in the US putting health officials on alert. A passenger arriving on an international flight tested positive for the highly contagious respiratory illness, which is currently spreading through the US, reports Daily Mail. Travellers at the airport were warned earlier this month that they could be at high risk of the virus. The infected traveler - who is a resident of another state - passed through the main terminal and the TSA security checkpoint before taking transportation to Concourse B between 1pm and 5pm. Travelers who fear they may have been exposed are advised to confirm if they have been vaccinated against measles. The confirmed case is a resident of another state. Health officials are coordinating an effort to identify people who might have been exposed, including contacting potentially exposed passengers on specific flights," the state health department said. Virginia has reported three cases of measles to date in 2025, with another one of these cases also linked to a traveler at Washington Dulles International Airport. The US has so far recorded more than 1,375 cases of measles, more than 60 percent of which are in children and teens. About 95 percent of cases have been in unvaccinated people or those who have not completed the recommended two-dose regimen. Virginia health officials advised that if a person has received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine, or were born before 1957, you are protected and do not need to take any action. "If you have never received a measles containing vaccine (either the measles, mumps and rubella [MMR] vaccine or a measles-only vaccine which is available in other countries), you may be at risk of developing measles. Anyone who might have been exposed and is considered to be at risk of developing measles should contact their healthcare provider promptly to discuss any questions they might have," the advisory read. You need to watch for symptoms for 21 days after the date of your potential exposure. If you notice symptoms of measles, immediately isolate yourself by staying home. Anyone with an immunocompromising condition should consult with their healthcare provider if they have questions or develop symptoms. However, to achieve the highest level of protection, contact your healthcare provider about getting a second vaccine dose. What are symptoms of measles? Measles is among the most infectious diseases on earth. Just one infected person can transmit the virus to an average of 12 to 18 susceptible people, including anyone who has not had two doses of the MMR vaccine, or has not previously contracted measles. Measles is a highly contagious illness that can spread easily through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. Measles symptoms usually appear in two stages. In the first stage, most people have a fever of greater than 101 degrees, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a cough. These symptoms usually start seven to fourteen days after being exposed. The second stage starts three to five days after symptoms start, when a rash begins to appear on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. People with measles are contagious from four days before the rash appears through four days after the rash appeared. Measles is preventable through a safe and effective MMR vaccine. Two doses of the vaccine are given to provide lifetime protection. Virginia has high measles vaccination rates , with approximately 95% of kindergarteners fully vaccinated against measles. However, infants who are too young to be vaccinated, and others who are not vaccinated, are very susceptible to infection if they are exposed to measles. nfants six months through 11 months of age who will be traveling internationally, or to an outbreak setting, should receive one dose of MMR vaccine prior to travel. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have questions about the MMR vaccine.

"Don't Let Work Consume You": Warns British Entrepreneur In Viral LinkedIn Post

In a message that's echoing with professionals across the globe, Dan Murray, British entrepreneur and co-founder of wellness brand Heights, is urging workers to prioritise their mental and physical health over the relentless demands of their jobs. His recent LinkedIn post titled "12 Reasons why you should always leave the office on time." has gone viral, as it delivers a powerful reminder about the dangers of overworking and the importance of leaving the office on time. Murray, also an angel investor in more than 90 startups, laid out 12 compelling reasons why employees should draw a clear line between work and personal life. At the heart of his post is a stark but vital message: don't sacrifice your well-being for work. "Work is a never-ending process," Murray writes. "But your time and health are finite-and far more valuable." The post arrives at a time when burnout and stress-related illnesses are at an all-time high, especially in industries where overworking is often glorified. According to the World Health Organization, working long hours has been linked to serious health risks, including heart disease, stroke, anxiety, and depression. Murray, who built Heights around the idea of mental wellness and cognitive performance, is no stranger to the costs of poor work-life balance. His advice stems from both experience and research. In the post, he explains how productivity drops significantly after extended hours, how relationships suffer, and how chronic overwork is simply unsustainable. "Your job is just a part of who you are, not your entire identity," he says. Among the 12 reasons listed, several key points stand out: working long hours leads to diminished productivity, damages health, and disrupts personal relationships. Murray emphasizes that by leaving the office on time, workers set boundaries, recharge their energy, and ultimately become better team members. "When you care for yourself outside of work, you'll be a better contributor to your team overall," he adds. The response to Murray's post has been overwhelmingly positive, with thousands of likes and shares from professionals in various industries echoing the sentiment. Many have shared their own stories of burnout and recovery, suggesting a growing movement toward healthier workplace culture. As companies continue to rethink their approach to employee well-being in the post-pandemic era, Murray's message is both timely and necessary. "Don't sacrifice your well-being for work," Murray concludes.
