Ex-Liverpool star calls Alexander-Arnold's Ballon d'Or dream 'almost impossible'
Trent Alexander-Arnold has made it known that he wants to win the Ballon d'Or but he's been warned that his ambition is near impossible ahead of his Real Madrid switch
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been told it is "almost impossible" for him to claim the Ballon d'Or at Real Madrid - despite confessing his desire to win the Golden Ball during his career.
The Liverpool star will call time on his stint at Anfield this summer, leaving the only club he's ever played for, with Los Blancos expected to be his destination. He will become the latest English star to head to the Spanish capital joining Jude Bellingham.
Alexander-Arnold, regarded as a generational talent, has made it clear he wants to win individual accolades and will move to the team who have the most Ballon d'Or winners in history. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luke Modric and Karim Benzema have all won the award in the white of Real.
However not since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006 has a defender won the award and Fernando Morientes, who played for Liverpool and Real, cannot see that changing.
He confessed that Alexander-Arnold's dream is achievable, but claimed that his exploits will only help the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jnr score more goals, improving their chances of claiming the Ballon d'Or ahead of him.
Morientes told CasinoHawks: 'Using what I know historically about the Ballon d'Or, I see that as very complicated. If Trent Alexander Arnold has an exceptional season in every sense, it means he's attacking a lot, that he'll score a lot of goals. But if he scores a lot of goals, then Kylian Mbappe will score a lot of goals, Jude Bellingham will score a lot of goals, Vinicius will score a lot of goals.
'It seems to me that this Ballon d'Or is designed for midfielders and attackers. Very rarely do we see defenders or goalkeepers. In fact, Fabio Cannavaro comes to mind in our time and little else, and everything else is scoring midfielders and forwards or exceptional players.
'Can Alexander Arnold win the Ballon d'Or at Real Madrid? Yes. Is it very difficult? It is very difficult. I see it as almost impossible, but it's good that he comes with those expectations. This means he has very high ambitions.'
Jamie Carragher admitted that Alexander-Arnold's Ballon d'Or confession was the first clear sign he wanted to head to Real. The defender said he wanted to win it ahead of another Champions League with the Sky Sports pundit raising it as an early red flag.
The only Ballon d'Or winner in Liverpool's' history was Michael Owen, who claimed the gong back in 2001. Over the past two decades only four times has the Golden Ball gone to a player NOT representing Real or Barcelona.

The season incoming Rangers boss Russell Martin was behind only Barcelona and Man City in Europe for possession stats
RANGERS fans will be wondering what to expect under their new manager as Ibrox chiefs close in on the appointment of Philippe Clement's successor. SunSport understands Russell Martin is in the final stages of negotiations over personal terms and is expected to be the next man in the hot-seat. Advertisement 3 Russell Martin is set to be named the new Rangers manager Credit: Getty 3 The Scot is expected to head back up north and back to Ibrox Credit: Getty It's an appointment that will have mixed feelings after the former Gers and Scotland defender was sacked by relegation-stricken Southampton in December. But should he officially land the job then Gers supporters can certainly expect possession-based free-flowing football in Govan next season, at the very least. Martin, 39, has stuck by that style at every club he has been, and it was the reason he became a sought-after young coach in the first place. He was hailed for his approach at MK Dons and Swansea but it came back to bite him in the Premier League this season with the Saints. Advertisement At one stage he even had one of his teams competing with Europe's elite in the possession department. In 2021, Martin's MK Dons had the third-highest average possession share in the whole continent, with Barcelona and Manchester City leading the way. The English side had an average share of 63.82 per cent, compared to Pep Guardiola's men in second place with 63.84 per cent and Barcelona at 65.11 per cent. In early March that year, MK Dons set a British record of scoring a goal against Gillingham to cap a move which comprised of 56 consecutive passes. Advertisement The 39-year-old spoke about his methodology on The Rest is Football podcast last month. He said: "After a year and a bit of working with the players and believe so much in something and you convince them of something. Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed "To then go by the way you are not good enough to do this now so you're going to have to change... "My feeling is I have learned a lot. Will I do things differently? No in terms of build up and trying to dominate the ball. Advertisement "I changed formation too much but the concept doesn't change. "You recognise where the space is, spare man and find him, and we will take territory as quick as we can. "Sometimes it will take 20 passes sometimes one, but you need to feel it, live it and do it together and work out. "But the problem was we weren't winning, so rather than being really consistent with the shape, and this is how we defend. Advertisement "I was overthinking a bit and going we need to change shape for this game because of this." 3 Martin revealed his style of play received plaudits from Manchester City boss Guardiola and his players. He added: "There were brilliant bits and played City away. Advertisement "It looked great at times, we broke through City's press a lot. "Pep Guardiola was amazingly complimentary and their players were surprised by the level of capability of the players, the way we played through them. "But we had five defenders, we had two full backs playing wing back and we couldn't finish it off so the balance was a bit skewed that's what I've learned." He also enjoyed a 25-game unbeaten run in the English Championship with Southampton. Advertisement A record-breaking number of passes was set by Southampton under Martin in their opening game against Sheffield Wednesday, with 931 successful passes and 477 in the first half. Rafael Nadal's uncle blasts Carlos Alcaraz in rant and suggests he quit tennis
Toni Nadal has suggested that Carlos Alcaraz should retire from playing tennis if he is unable to deal with the pressures of the sport, after hearing about the young sensation's antics in his Netflix docu-series Toni Nadal, the uncle and former coach of tennis legend Rafael Nadal, suggested that Carlos Alcaraz should quit tennis if he can't cope with the sport's pressures. Speaking on the Nude Project podcast, Toni discussed his nephew's retirement before turning his attention to Alcaraz's Netflix docu-series, which revealed his off-court life, including a party trip to Ibiza weeks before Wimbledon. Alcaraz said in the series: "I ended up going and they know what I'm going there to do. In Ibiza, I'm not going to lie, it's pretty much all about partying and going out. "I basically went there to reventar [literally, 'burst' in Spanish], I'm not sure if that's the best way to put it, but I went there to go out." Despite not having watched the show, Toni didn't hold back in his critique of the world No. 2's behaviour, saying: "If it is too much for him, then he should quit tennis. I understand things differently in life. "In the world of sports, everything tends to be exaggerated. I've often heard about the sacrifice in sports, the sacrifices made by Real Madrid athletes, and I would say: 'Sacrifice?' "Life is about making choices, not just doing what I want. Sometimes it's worth it for people, and sometimes it's not. If it's not worth it for you, it's better to change jobs." He added (via the Express): "I hope Alcaraz doesn't change jobs because he's one of the best in the world, but one has to take on the challenge. "One must accept that things in life will involve a series of compromises. I don't talk about sacrifices because I think that sacrifice is what you do for others. "When you do it for yourself, it's the price you have to pay. Alcaraz, being a great tennis player, indeed pays a price. "But on the other hand, he earns much more money than the vast majority of young people his age, has much greater social recognition, and experiences things that few people do... but if it's not worth it for you, better make a decision." Alcaraz has already amassed an enviable collection of Grand Slam titles, including two Wimbledon victories, a French Open, and a US Open. And while there have been comparisons between Alcaraz and Nadal - who secured 22 Grand Slams during his glorious career - there is still work to be done before the two can truly be compared. Alcaraz has his eyes set on another title this May as he continues to wow at Roland Garros. Following victories over Giulio Zeppieri, Fabian Marozsan, Damir Dzumhur and Ben Shelton, the 22-year-old has reached the quarter-finals. To move into the semis, Alcaraz needs a win over the world's current No. 12, Tommy Paul. Tennis fans can watch Alcaraz and Paul go head-to-head at 7:15pm at the Court Philippe-Chatrier on Tuesday.
