The season incoming Rangers boss Russell Martin was behind only Barcelona and Man City in Europe for possession stats
RANGERS fans will be wondering what to expect under their new manager as Ibrox chiefs close in on the appointment of Philippe Clement's successor.
SunSport understands Russell Martin is in the final stages of negotiations over personal terms and is expected to be the next man in the hot-seat.

It's an appointment that will have mixed feelings after the former Gers and Scotland defender was sacked by relegation-stricken Southampton in December.
But should he officially land the job then Gers supporters can certainly expect possession-based free-flowing football in Govan next season, at the very least.
Martin, 39, has stuck by that style at every club he has been, and it was the reason he became a sought-after young coach in the first place.
He was hailed for his approach at MK Dons and Swansea but it came back to bite him in the Premier League this season with the Saints.

At one stage he even had one of his teams competing with Europe's elite in the possession department.
In 2021, Martin's MK Dons had the third-highest average possession share in the whole continent, with Barcelona and Manchester City leading the way.
The English side had an average share of 63.82 per cent, compared to Pep Guardiola's men in second place with 63.84 per cent and Barcelona at 65.11 per cent.
In early March that year, MK Dons set a British record of scoring a goal against Gillingham to cap a move which comprised of 56 consecutive passes.

The 39-year-old spoke about his methodology on The Rest is Football podcast last month.
He said: "After a year and a bit of working with the players and believe so much in something and you convince them of something.

"To then go by the way you are not good enough to do this now so you're going to have to change...
"My feeling is I have learned a lot. Will I do things differently? No in terms of build up and trying to dominate the ball.

"I changed formation too much but the concept doesn't change.
"You recognise where the space is, spare man and find him, and we will take territory as quick as we can.
"Sometimes it will take 20 passes sometimes one, but you need to feel it, live it and do it together and work out.
"But the problem was we weren't winning, so rather than being really consistent with the shape, and this is how we defend.

"I was overthinking a bit and going we need to change shape for this game because of this."

Martin revealed his style of play received plaudits from Manchester City boss Guardiola and his players.
He added: "There were brilliant bits and played City away.

"It looked great at times, we broke through City's press a lot.
"Pep Guardiola was amazingly complimentary and their players were surprised by the level of capability of the players, the way we played through them.
"But we had five defenders, we had two full backs playing wing back and we couldn't finish it off so the balance was a bit skewed that's what I've learned."
He also enjoyed a 25-game unbeaten run in the English Championship with Southampton.

A record-breaking number of passes was set by Southampton under Martin in their opening game against Sheffield Wednesday, with 931 successful passes and 477 in the first half.

Trai Hume wants Northern Ireland's young guns to set standard for squad
Hume and his Sunderland team-mate Daniel Ballard have been celebrating earning promotion to the Premier League after a dramatic play-off campaign that ended with victory over Sheffield United at Wembley. And that came at the end of a month in which Conor Bradley received his first Premier League winner's medal with Liverpool and fellow 21-year-old Justin Devenny lifted the FA Cup with Crystal Palace. Representing on the big stage 💚🤍 #GAWA @SunderlandAFC | @hume_trai | @dg_ballard — Northern Ireland (@NorthernIreland) May 24, 2025 Ballard, 25, and Hume, 23, will double the Premier League contingent in Michael O'Neill's squad, something that Hume believes can only help as they look ahead to their World Cup qualifying campaign that starts in September. 'I don't think there's any doubt,' Hume said. 'You're exposing yourself to the best league in the world, so you want to try your best to do well there and if you can, you're going to become a better player because of it. 'Obviously me and Dan are still young, Conor and Justin are still young, so hopefully we can have a lot of years in the Premier League and that will only benefit Northern Ireland going forward. 'I have no doubt there's other players in the squad that will get themselves into the Premier League as well. Obviously it's us four at the minute and hopefully we can try and push the lads and bring them up to the standard that we're going to set.' Northern Ireland are preparing for Saturday's friendly away to Denmark and Tuesday's match at home against Iceland, but their eyes are already on September when they begin their World Cup qualifying campaign with an away double-header against Luxembourg and Germany, with Slovakia also in Group A. Playing in high-pressure games like the Championship play-off final is valuable experience ahead of facing the likes of Germany, and Hume said: 'I think it will help us deal with the atmosphere a bit better. Obviously, the calibre of players will be a lot different. I think we will try our best to deal with that. HUUUUUUUUUUME ❤️ — Sunderland AFC (@SunderlandAFC) June 1, 2025 'I think the big games you do play in, you get used to the emotion of it and the challenge of playing in front of the crowd and not getting caught up in the emotion of the game. 'Germany is definitely going to be a lot different than Sheffield United. Like I say, we will just have to try our best to be ready and be focused for it.' Germany are obvious favourites to top the group, with Northern Ireland vying to beat Slovakia and Luxembourg to second place and the play-off spot that would bring. Ballard said they would treat their games against those two nations as cup finals. 'I think we can make a really positive start to the group,' he said. 'I think the games against Luxembourg and Slovakia are going to be really important for us. I think they will all be like cup finals. 'I feel like we have a real opportunity this year to go and put ourselves in a strong spot to qualify.'

Two wins for Wrexham on opening day of Soccer Tournament
For the third consecutive year, Wrexham are playing in the winner-takes-all, million-dollar seven-a-side event in Cary. Competing in Group F, Wrexham opened their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Real Athletico. Returning as a guest player for Wrexham for the third time, George Boyd hit the winning goal against debutants Athletico. Boyd - the tournament's all-time top goalscorer - was the Target Score Time hero once again as he sealed success. Former Reds' striker Jake Hyde had earlier scored two goals in normal time, either side of Athletico's equaliser. Wrexham built on that win by beating AFC Bournemouth 6-2 to progress to the knock-out stages. Boyd grabbed a brace - one was a goal of the tournament contender with a stunning volley - in the victory. Academy graduates Aaron James and Callum Edwards were on target, along with Sak Hassan, as Wrexham led 5-0 going into Target Score Time. Bournemouth struck twice in the extra period, but former Premier League champion Marc Albrighton got the all-important sixth goal. Wrexham face Pat McAfee's CONCAFA FC in the final group game today and will then take part in the knock-out stages for the third consecutive season. The tournament runs until Monday while Wrexham Red Dragons' women's side begin their campaign against Ultrain today before facing Drunken Moneys and Kansas City II tomorrow in their last two matches of the group stages.

Championship: Title favourites Ipswich lose star striker
Chelsea have signed Liam Delap from Ipswich on a deal until until 2031 after triggering his £30million release clause. Kieran McKenna's side will be aiming to return to the Premier League at the first attempt following their relegation but will do so without Delap. An agreement was reached between the clubs last week for the England under-21 international, who becomes the Blues' first summer signing and can join immediately due to FIFA's 10-day June transfer window. That will enable him to take part in the upcoming Club World Cup in the United States, though if he travels with the team it will means he will miss the European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia. The 22-year-old said on the club's official website: 'I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach. 'It's going to be an incredible place for me to develop and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies.' Chelsea reportedly fended off interest from Manchester United, with the lack of European football next season for the Old Trafford side understood to be a factor in the player's decision to pick west London. Enzo Maresca's side will play in the Champions League after finishing fourth in his first season in charge, the first time the club has qualified for Europe's top competition since 2022. Delap's signing means the pair will be reunited after working together with Manchester City's under-23 team while Maresca was in charge during the 2020/21 season, and latterly with the senior squad when the Italian was assistant to Pep Guardiola. Delap made only six first-team appearances for City, scoring once, before loan spells with Stoke, Preston and Hull. Despite Ipswich's relegation from the Premier League, which made his release clause active, he adapted quickly to the top flight by scoring 12 times in his first full season in the division – comfortably his best goal return – having spent most of his senior career in the Championship. Chelsea have been stretched thin in attack this season, with injuries to Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu leaving the team without a fit striker for periods of the campaign. Of those two, only Jackson has scored in the Premier League and the need for credible competition and support for the Senegal international has long been apparent.
