Two wins for Wrexham on opening day of Soccer Tournament

Leader Live05-06-2025
For the third consecutive year, Wrexham are playing in the winner-takes-all, million-dollar seven-a-side event in Cary.
Competing in Group F, Wrexham opened their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Real Athletico.
Returning as a guest player for Wrexham for the third time, George Boyd hit the winning goal against debutants Athletico.
Boyd - the tournament's all-time top goalscorer - was the Target Score Time hero once again as he sealed success.
Former Reds' striker Jake Hyde had earlier scored two goals in normal time, either side of Athletico's equaliser.
Wrexham built on that win by beating AFC Bournemouth 6-2 to progress to the knock-out stages.
Boyd grabbed a brace - one was a goal of the tournament contender with a stunning volley - in the victory.
Academy graduates Aaron James and Callum Edwards were on target, along with Sak Hassan, as Wrexham led 5-0 going into Target Score Time.
Bournemouth struck twice in the extra period, but former Premier League champion Marc Albrighton got the all-important sixth goal.
Wrexham face Pat McAfee's CONCAFA FC in the final group game today and will then take part in the knock-out stages for the third consecutive season.
The tournament runs until Monday while Wrexham Red Dragons' women's side begin their campaign against Ultrain today before facing Drunken Moneys and Kansas City II tomorrow in their last two matches of the group stages.

Man Utd transfer news: Benjamin Sesko deal cancels protest as Antony ultimatum issued

A Manchester United protest has been called off in light of the club landing the signing of Benjamin Sesko as Antony's future remains front and centre with the transfer deadline closing in Manchester United's frontline has been transformed by an impressive summer of recruitment with three new faces setting them back more than £200million. The capture of Benjamin Sesko, presented to Old Trafford on Saturday, means Ruben Amorim has addressed the lack of goals in his team last season. With the season fast approaching it is unlikely that any new faces will arrive before they play Arsenal on Sunday. However Amorim has made it clear he would like a new midfielder with Brighton's Carlos Baleba continuing to be linked with a move to Manchester. He's excelled at the Amex but, given the fee the Seagulls would demand, there's an acceptance that any deal could prove challenging. PSG 's Gianluigi Donnarumma is another player who could be on the move with the Parisians leaving him out of their squad for this week's European Super Cup. PSG are open to his exit with United among those keen. Here's the latest news lines from the Red Devils. Sesko signing cancels protest Manchester United supporters group The 1958 has pulled the plug on a planned protest. The group had planned to march against Sir Jim Ratcliffe's ownership ahead of United's opening Premier League game, against Arsenal. Their decision comes just days after Sesko joined the club. The striker signing in a deal worth up to £74m. In early August, The 1958 shared plans for a protest while claiming "shiny new signings" shouldn't distract from minority owner Ratcliffe's involvement. However, following a mixed response to the announcement, the group then put the plans to its membership. While the majority of those surveyed agreed Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS should be judged on what they have delivered, some 68 percent felt they deserved more time to show what they can do. In announcing the postponement of the march, The 1958 published a breakdown of the voting. Antony ultimatum issued The Red Devils have issued winger Antony with an ultimatum as the Brazilian attempts to secure a move to Real Betis. The club have demanded the Brazilian winger to accept a transfer offer this week or risk remaining on the sidelines at Old Trafford until January. The La Liga side want to see the former Ajax man return to the club but want to hang on until the final moments of the transfer window to close a deal with United for a loan with option or obligation to buy. But those on the red side of Manchester want to seal an exit, according to reports in Spain, and have already received offers that they would deem financially suitable and do not want to regard Betis as their only option. Lewandowsi eyed Man Utd move Robert Lewandowski has revealed that he "said yes" to the opportunity to move to Manchester to play under Sir Alex Ferguson - only for the move never to happen. The Barcelona star has been one of Europe's outstanding No 9s for more than a decade, but a different path may have seen him play at Old Trafford under the Scot in his final year as a manager. It was in 2012 that he gave the green light to move to Manchester from Borussia Dortmund for what would've been the final spell of Ferguson's stint in Manchester. The interest came off the back of a season where Lewandowski claimed the Bundesliga title, scoring 30 times. The Polish star told the BBC: "To Manchester United I decided and said yes. I wanted to join Manchester United, to see Alex Ferguson."

Dave Challinor wants Stockport to be rewarded in Carabao Cup draw

Second-half headers from Kyle Wootton and Nathan Lowe plus Lewis Fiorini's strike secured County victory at Edgeley Park to dump out the Railwaymen, whose late consolation came from Emre Tezgel. Challinor will have a keen eye on Wednesday's draw, which includes Manchester United among the 11 Premier League clubs entering the competition. He said: 'The second-half performance was much better and had much more intent about us. I was disappointed with our first half because of what we wanted the players to do and they didn't do that. 'It was too placid in the first half that we played. I'm delighted to win, that's the aim and hence why we picked the team that we did. Tonight was about progressing and we've done that and hopefully we get rewarded for that with a nice draw.' Lee Bell felt his Crewe side were undone by poor defending for Stockport's first two goals. He said: 'We're obviously disappointed to be knocked out of a competition. We knew we were going to be understrength and then you get here and see the players they had on the team sheet. 'But I think shape-wise and the way we tried to play was good. I've just said to the players if we want to achieve anything, you've got to stop crosses coming into your box and you've got to mark inside the box, because ultimately those two goals have cost us.'

‘Wrexham never give up' – Phil Parkinson celebrates stunning Carabao Cup success

Veteran striker Ollie Palmer put doubt over his future aside by coming off the bench to score twice in stoppage time and snatch a 3-3 draw before the Red Dragons prevailed 5-3 on spot-kicks. It was the Welsh side's first home match of a new season in which they are playing in the second tier for the first time in more than 40 years. Anticipation had been high but, after last weekend's last-gasp defeat at Southampton, it took something extraordinary to avoid another anti-climax. Parkinson said: 'Well, first of all, we show that we never give up. I think the trait of the team and the club over the last three, four years is that. 'I think it's good for the new lads to see that and to say that we're going to go to the end. 'I feel we've got our season off and running. The subs and the penalties were brilliant and I'm so pleased for big Ollie because he's a hero.' You can't beat moments like this 🚀 🔴⚪️ #WxmAFC — Wrexham AFC (@Wrexham_AFC) August 12, 2025 Palmer, 33, played a key role in Wrexham's rise from the National League but fell down the pecking order in the latter stages of last season. That has led to suggestions he could move on but Parkinson retains huge respect for the former AFC Wimbledon forward. Parkinson said: 'He was fantastic. He's been a cult player for us over the years and he conducted himself amazingly well last year when we made changes. 'He wanted to stay and be a part of it, and he was tonight. You can never write anybody off. He couldn't have done any more.' Wrexham took the lead in the 31st minute through Elliot Lee but it was Hull who looked like going through after hitting back through their eye-catching free signing Oli McBurnie and substitutes Joel Ndala and Matt Crooks. But after Palmer's late show it was Ndala who proved the fall guy, hitting the crossbar with his penalty. Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic said: 'It's mixed feelings. I think that we played very good game and until 80-85 minutes we controlled everything. 'But this is a great experience for us for the future because it's not finished before the referee blows the whistle. 'We must continue because I think that we showed a lot of good things in our game. I'm sorry for the players because they put in everything.'
