
Huge cache of banned cough syrups seized in Odisha, three arrested
Bhubaneswar, July 27 (UNI) Police in Odisha's Bargarh district have arrested three persons for smuggling of codeine-laced Wincerex and Eskuf cough syrup, a banned substance under Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS).
Acting upon specific intelligence regarding hoarding and transportation of cough syrup by suspected drug peddlers in the Bisipada area, a raid was conducted and three persons were intercepted on Saturday, police said.
In the presence of an Executive Magistrate and government witness, a search was conducted, leading to the recovery of 1970 bottles of Wincerex cough syrup and Eskuf cough syrup and 1000 Nitrosun Tablets .
All necessary legal formalities under the NDPS Act were duly followed. The accused persons were taken into custody yesterday and were forwarded to Court. Later they were sent to jail after the Court rejected his bail application.
Further investigation is underway to trace the origin of the contraband articles and unearth the broader network involved in the illicit drug trade, said Superintendent of Police, Bargarh, Prahlad Sahai Meena.

Manipur: 5 policemen suspended for 'grave misconduct', 'dereliction of duty'
Imphal: Manipur Police have suspended five of its personnel, including an inspector, for "grave misconduct" and "dereliction of duty", an official statement said. An order issued by Director General of Police Rajiv Singh said that Inspector Ningthoujam Devdas Singh, officer-in-charge of CDO Imphal East, has been placed under suspension with immediate effect "over allegations of grave misconduct". During the suspension period, Inspector Devdas Singh's headquarters will be at the superintendent of police's office in Imphal East district, and he is barred from leaving without prior permission from the competent authority and will receive subsistence allowances as per service rules, it said. Four other personnel -- Sub Inspector B Debson Singh and Constable Tarique Aziz of the Imphal East commando unit, Head Constable Md Rakib of Thoubal commando unit, and Jemadar Md Amin Shah of the 7th Battalion of Manipur Rifles at Khabeisoi (Imphal East) -- were also suspended. Separate suspension orders were issued against each of the accused personnel. Manipur Police said that the personnel were removed from active duty for "conduct unbecoming of a police officer", "grave misconduct", and "dereliction of duty". Officials privy with the matter said that the suspension was linked to bribery related to release of drug peddlers after being caught with narcotics. Sub Inspector Debson Singh was earlier arrested in 2013 for transporting drugs worth over Rs 3 crore to Moreh in Tengnoupal district.

Delhi Police arrest 7 auto-lifters, two proclaimed offenders in separate operations
New Delhi: In a significant breakthrough, Delhi Police teams from West and South West Districts have arrested a total of nine auto-lifters and two proclaimed offenders (POs) in separate operations across the national capital. The crackdown comes as part of intensified efforts to tackle street crime, motor vehicle theft, and absconding criminals evading trial. According to a press release issued by the West District Police on Tuesday, seven notorious auto-lifters were apprehended during a series of patrol operations led by multiple police teams. The accused, identified as Dinesh alias Teda, Swantantar alias Babu, Arjun alias Teesmar Khan, Nikhil alias Noni, Ravi, Vishal, and Chetram, have collectively been previously involved in over 60 criminal cases, including theft, snatching, and violations of the Arms Act. The arrests were made during targeted patrolling by units from AATS, Punjabi Bagh, Hari Nagar, Tilak Nagar, and Vikas Puri police stations. A total of six stolen scooties and three motorcycles were recovered from their possession, helping the police solve nine separate FIRs registered across various parts of Delhi. The accused were tracked with the aid of CCTV surveillance and local intelligence. Meanwhile, in South West Delhi, teams from PS Kishangarh and PS Palam Village arrested two proclaimed offenders wanted in separate cases under the NDPS and Arms Act. In a press note issued by DCP South West, Amit Goel, it was revealed that Ifeanyi, a Nigerian national wanted in a 2018 NDPS case, and Rahul alias Jaggi, a 22-year-old from Uttar Pradesh, evading arrest in an Arms Act case since 2020, were successfully nabbed following technical and manual surveillance. "Secret information was received regarding the proclaimed offender, Rahul @ Jaggi. Accordingly, a dedicated team comprising ASI Nityanand and HC Manohar Lal was constituted under the leadership of Insp. Sudhir Kumar Gulia, SHO/PS Palam Village and under the supervision of Sh. Anil Kumar, ACP/Sub-division Delhi Cantt, to nab the offender," stated the press release. The arrests were carried out following court-issued orders declaring both individuals as proclaimed offenders in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Ifeanyi had been involved in illegal drug supply operations in Delhi-NCR, while Rahul was previously booked in multiple cases related to theft and illegal possession of arms. Quoting the press releases, Delhi Police emphasised their commitment to pursuing habitual offenders and proclaimed criminals: 'Dedicated teams have been working relentlessly to trace absconders and prevent street crime, with both technical and human intelligence playing a critical role in recent arrests.'

Ranya Rao gold smuggling case: Ramachandra Rao gets posting after five months
BENGALURU: Nearly five months after being sent on compulsory leave following the arrest of his stepdaughter in a gold smuggling case, senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao was posted as Director General of Police (DGP), Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE), on Monday. Rao's stepdaughter and actress, Ranya Rao (34), was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on March 3, 2025, for allegedly smuggling gold from Dubai.
