A New Paradigm for Power Grid Operation
Power grids operate like an intricate ballet of energy generation and consumption that must remain perfectly balanced at all times. The grid maintains a steady frequency (60 Hz in North America and 50 Hz in many other regions) by matching power generation to demand in real-time. Traditional power plants with large rotating turbines and generators play a crucial role in this balance through their mechanical inertia—the natural tendency of these massive spinning machines to resist changes in their rotational speed. This inertia acts as a natural stabilizer for the grid. When there's a sudden change in power demand or generation, such as a large factory turning on or a generator failing, the rotational energy stored in these spinning masses automatically helps cushion the impact. The machines momentarily speed up or slow down slightly, giving grid operators precious seconds to respond and adjust other power sources. However, as we transition to renewable energy sources like solar and wind that don't have this natural mechanical inertia, maintaining grid stability becomes more challenging. This is why grid operators are increasingly focusing on technologies like synthetic inertia from wind turbines, battery storage systems, and advanced control systems to replicate the stabilizing effects traditionally provided by conventional power plants. Alex Boyd, CEO of PSC, a global specialist consulting firm working in the areas of power systems and control systems engineering, believes the importance of inertia will lessen, and probably sooner than most people think. In fact, he suggested stability based on physical inertia will soon be the least-preferred approach. Boyd recognizes that his view, which was expressed while he was a guest on The POWER Podcast, is potentially controversial, but there is a sound basis behind his prediction. 'The premise behind stability based on inertia is: the inertia makes it hard to move the way the grid operates quickly, and so as a result, you gain stability out of it,' Boyd explained. 'With the evolution to power electronic-based stability services, we're going to have a lot more options to have precise control and change things much more quickly than we can today.' Power electronics-based systems utilize inverter-based resources, such as wind, solar, and batteries. These systems can detect and respond to frequency deviations almost instantaneously using fast frequency response mechanisms. This actually allows for much faster stabilization compared to mechanical inertia. Power electronics reduce the need for traditional inertia by enabling precise control of grid parameters like frequency and voltage. While they decrease the available physical inertia, they also decrease the amount of inertia required for stability through advanced control strategies. Virtual synchronous generators and advanced inverters can emulate inertia dynamically, offering tunable responses that adapt to grid conditions. For example, adaptive inertia schemes provide high initial inertia to absorb faults but reduce it over time to prevent oscillations. Power electronic systems address stability issues across a wide range of frequencies and timescales, including harmonic stability and voltage regulation. This is achieved through multi-timescale modeling and control techniques that are not possible with purely mechanical systems. Inverter-based resources allow for distributed coordination of grid services, such as frequency regulation and voltage support, enabling more decentralized grid operation compared to centralized inertia-centric systems. Power electronic systems are essential for grids with a high penetration of renewable energy sources, which lack inherent mechanical inertia. These systems ensure stability while facilitating the transition to low-carbon energy by emulating or replacing traditional generator functions. 'I do foresee a time in the not-too-distant future where we'll be thinking about how do we actually design a system so that we don't need to be impacted so much by the physical inertia, because it's preventing us from doing what we want to do,' said Boyd. 'I think that time is coming. There will be a lot of challenges to overcome, and there'll be a lot of learning that needs to be done, but I do think the time is coming.' Cell phone bills to go up in West Virginia
CHARLESTON, (WBOY) — Starting next month, West Virginians will see a slight increase to their cell phone bills. According to a release Thursday from the Public Service Commission (PSC) of West Virginia, the wireless enhanced 911 (WE911) fee in West Virginia will increase by 10.2 percent in July, going from $3.64 to $4.01. On top of that, wireless providers will begin to collect a $0.08 wireless tower fee and a $0.29 public safety wireless fee, both of which will be shown separately on customers' bills. In total, customers will see their 911 fees jump from $3.64 to $4.38. All of West Virginia under Air Quality Alert Thursday So what do these funds do? The funds from these new fees are designed to go toward improving and operating 911 and emergency phone services, the release said. The PSC collects the fees through wireless service providers, but the funds are redistributed to counties. The WE911 fee can be recalculated every two years based on costs that county commissions impose on local exchange and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) users, which is known as the enhanced 911 fee. If the enhanced 911 fee goes up by a certain percentage, the WE911 fee is set to match it. In March 2025, the PSC voted to increase the enhanced 911 fee by 10.17 percent, meaning that the WE911 fee has now been raised to match, rounding to the nearest penny. Public hearings set in Southwest Missouri over Liberty Utilities rate hike
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Beginning in July, the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC) will host in-person and virtual public hearings for Liberty Utilities customers in Southwest Missouri regarding Liberty's request for an electric rate increase. Liberty is looking for an increase of $152.8 million per year from rate revenues and to raise the monthly fixed residential customer charge from $13 to $16, PSC says. The hearings will consist of a public information and Q&A session, followed by the Commission taking public comments. Those interested in attending are encouraged to go to the meeting location closest to their service area. TikTok user shares how she gets free food on Uber Eats app
A woman claims to have 'cracked the code' to scoring free food when ordering Uber Eats, saying that all it takes is a little kindness. Taking to TikTok, content creator Emma Kate Boyd explained, 'All you have to do is write something really nice in the caption' when using the food delivery app. When ordering Vietnamese takeaway from Melbourne restaurant Miss Chu recently, she wrote 'I f**king love Miss Chu' in the order notes of the app. 'They gave me a free dessert,' she said proudly, holding up a container of chocolate pudding. 'It really is that simple – spread a little love, get a little love.' reached out to Uber Eats for comment, and while they couldn't quantify how often restaurants give out free items, it's understood that this does happen across the platform. Boyd's video quickly went viral, racking up over 40,000 views, as users shared their own experiences trying this. 'I wrote a cute note once and they refunded my whole order,' said one user. 'I did that and they just put hearts on my items,' wrote another. In the same month, a delivery driver also shared his tricks and tips for ordering from places like UberEats. 'You don't need to scam anyone or lie about your order,' he explained online. He said customers need to join restaurants' loyalty schemes that sometimes offer first-time customers free food. Additionally, he explained, 'Honestly, if you've got a birthday, you've got free food. Some people use this every year like clockwork'.
