Egyptian National Theatre Festival kicks off its 18th edition - Stage & Street - Arts & Culture

The 18th edition of the Egyptian National Theatre Festival launched on Sunday, 20 July, with an inaugural ceremony at the Cairo Opera House's main hall.

Running until 6 August, this year's edition is held under the slogan The Festival Across All Egyptl.
The ceremony featured the play Open the Curtains of Our Theatres, hosted by actor Amr Abdel-Aziz.
In his opening remarks, Minister of Culture Ahmed Fouad Hano paid tribute to generations of theatre artists: 'On this exceptional evening, we stand in appreciation and reverence for all those who dedicated their lives to theatre art… Our honouring of them today is an acknowledgment of their merit and a tribute to an unforgettable journey.'
Ahead of the official opening, the festival toured four governorates representing Egypt's regional diversity, where theatrical performances were staged and local artists honoured.
This year's edition pays tribute to ten leading figures in Egyptian theatre, including actors Ashraf Abdel-Baki, Mohie Ismail, Samira Abdel-Aziz, Mimi Gamal, Ahmed Nabil, Selim Kitchener, and Jalal Al-Ashry, as well as directors Abeer Ali, Ahmed Abdel Jalil, and Sobhi Al-Sayed. A special posthumous honour was given to the late actress Samiha Ayoub, who passed away in June.
The official competition features 35 theatrical productions different bodies operating under the Ministry of Culture as well as independent troupes.
This edition features a greater number of specialized creative workshops. It will also include discussions about the theatre world, the impact of artificial intelligence on performances and scripts, as well as the influence of wars and conflicts shaking the region on theatre.
Launched in 2006, the festival serves as a platform for honouring theatre-makers, documenting significant productions, and fostering dialogue around the future of Egyptian theatre.

Amr Diab Releases New Music Video for "Khatfoony" Ft. Daughter Jana

Yara Sameh "El Hadaba' Amr Diab released Wednesday the visual for his duet song "Khatfoony," on YouTube. The visual was filmed in the North Coast by director Tarek Alarian and features the acclaimed singer's daughter Jana and Bader. It is by the lyrics of Tamer Hussein and Jana Diab, and composed by Amr Mostafa. "Khatfoony" is featured on Diab's newly released album "Ebtadena, which consists of 15 songs, including a duet with his son Abdallah. In the new album, the acclaimed singer also collaborated with a large number of poets and composers, including Amr Mostafa, Bahaa El Din Mohamed, Ayman Bahgat Kamar, Tamer Hussein, and Aziz Al-Shafi'i. Born on October 11, 1961, Diab is a multi-award-winning pop singer-songwriter. He created his own style which is often termed 'Mediterranean Music', a blend of Western and Egyptian rhythms, by 1992, he became the first Arabic artist to start making high-tech music videos. He is a Guinness World Record holder, the best-selling Middle Eastern artist, a seven-time winner of World Music Awards, and a five-time winner of Platinum Records. Diab's fame in the entertainment industry has led him to experiment with other forms of media, such as film-making. The acclaimed singer co-starred in four films, 'Al Sagenatan', 'El Afareet', 'Ice Cream in Gleam', and 'Dehk Wa Le'b Wa Gad Wa Hob'. In 1988, he made his acting debut in the film 'Al Sagenatan' starring prominent actresses Elham Shahin and Samah Anwar. Despite the films' success, Diab did not experience the same success in acting as he had with his music. He has focused on his singing career since 1993. In 2020, the iconic singer signed on to make an acting comeback in an original Arabic series for Netflix. Khaled El Nabawy to Participate in Ramadan 2026 Drama Marathon

Yara Sameh Famed Egyptian actor Khaled El Nabawy is preparing for a new TV series, which he plans to participate in during the Ramadan 2026 drama marathon. The series hails from director Youssr Taher and witnesses El Nabawy's comeback to the drama marathon after opting to skip this season. He made his last participation in the marathon with the 2024 TV adaptation of the 1972 film "Embratoreyet Meem" (Empire M). The 1972 film follows Mona (Faten Hamama), a widow raising her six kids besides her work. She gradually falls in love with businessman Ahmed (Ahmed Mazhar) but doesn't give in to her feelings easily being torn apart between her devotion to her children and her future with Ahmed. The film featured a cast that included Faten Hamama, Ahmed Mazhar, Hesham Selim, Dawlat Abyad, Ali Gawhar, Saif Abo El Naga, Nagyat Kandel, and others. Filmmaker Hussein Kamal directed the pic from a script by Ihsan Abd al-Qudus and Mustafa Samy. In the TV adaptation, it follows Mukhtar, who is left to care for his six children after losing his wife. He must navigate their changing needs and perspectives while also choosing between his children's lives and the person to whom his heart is attached. The drama also stars Hala Shiha, Nour El-Nabawy, Nashwa Moustafa, Mahmoud Hafez, Mohamed Mahmoud Abdulaziz, Rasha Mahdi, Eman Al Sayyed, Hagar ElSarrag, and more. The reimagining, consisting of 30 episodes, was directed by Mohamed Salama and written by Mohamed Suleiman Abdel Malek.
