Justin Timberlake
Last year marked a series of high highs and low lows for pop and R&B singer Justin Timberlake. In the middle of his 'Forget Tomorrow' world tour, Timberlake was arrested for a DUI, an incident that resulted in the delay of some of his tour dates, including his Chicago show. Ever the professional, Timberlake is back to fulfill his show schedule, and his Valentine's Day concert may make for an even more thrilling experience for concert-goers. While Timberlake may be best known for his boastful tracks such as 'SexyBack' or his bitter revenge songs such as'Cry Me a River,' he also has a collection of tunes that are loving and romantic. Expect a handful of those, perhaps even the fan favorite 'Mirrors,' as well as some of his more recent music during this sure-to-be lively show.

It's an all-night affair at this Valentine's Day weekend edition of the ongoing Nocturna party. Guests are encouraged to dance all night at this six-hour New Wave-focused dance party. DJ Scary Lady Sarah will set the mood for the evening as the official selector for this Valentine's ball. Wear something fun and channel the spirit of the genre's origins.

Heart of Chicago Soul Club Valentine's Dance Party
All-vinyl, rare soul takes center stage. While Chicago has bred a number of throwback soul parties throughout the years, none are quite like the women-led Heart of Chicago Soul Club. The event, which was a runner-up for the Chicago Reader's Best Dance Party of 2023, keeps sold-out crowds both young and old entertained with a focus on soulful music and community building. During the Valentine's Day edition of the Heart of Chicago Soul dance party, DJs Debbie, Ricky, Kat and Psyche Prissy Pie will share a funk-driven collection of vintage '60s rare soul, R&B and psych music. 'Our dance parties have already proven to be love starters, so you never know what might happen!' the party promoters told the Hideout about the upcoming event.

Dua Saleh
Multifaceted entertainers are seemingly in vogue, with many performers such as Sabrina Carpenter and SZA slipping between the acting and music worlds. Dua Saleh is another such talent. For many Netflix fans, Saleh is best known for their role as Cal Bowman in the popular television series 'Sex Education.' But Saleh is also a singer and songwriter. In 2019, they released their first EP and followed it up with two additional EPs in 2020 and 2021. Last year, the Sudanese American artist dropped their debut album, 'I Should Call Them,' a smart and sophisticated concept album about the breakups and reunion of two lovers. The record, featuring artists such as serpentwithfeet and Gallant, is a unique wonder sure to please pop and R&B fans.

The director behind the new documentary "Depeche Mode: M" links the cultural significance of the Mexican holiday celebrating the Day of the Dead with the music of the electro-synth-pop band, which is indisputably a New Wave pioneer. It's an ambiguous concept, but also an intriguing one. At the June 5 world premiere of "M" at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Frías was joined by Depeche Mode's David Gahan and Martin Gore for a boisterous screening of the 95-minute film that often felt as much like a live concert as the one(s) depicted on screen. "One of the things about a Depeche Mode concert is it's a communal experience," Gahan said during a Tribeca Film Festival panel after the showing. "Watching ourselves (perform) is kind of painful, to be honest … I can't explain what happens when you perform. It's a strange, spiritual experience communicated through music." More: Billy Joel's documentary digs deep into past with poignancy – but he's 'not finished yet' Depeche Mode's music connects to Day of the Dead That experience was filmed during a three-night stand at Mexico City's Foro Sol Stadium in 2023, where a total of more than 200,000 fans pilgrimaged to watch the sleek, massive production that showcased Gahan twirling around the stage like Stevie Nicks in a three-piece suit, Gore sharing his keyboard and guitar skills as well as his angelic voice and songs from four decades of synth-drenched creativity. Frías' arty approach toggled between black and white and color video and many of his camera shots – a closeup of the heel of Gahan's boot, the quick cut to a cluster of fans waving white-gloved hands during "Never Let Me Down Again," as per tradition – confirmed how much he wanted this documentary to be different. In between songs including the moody "My Cosmos is Mine" and "Don't Say You Love Me," both from 2023's "Memento Mori" album ("remember, you will die"), voiceovers from fans and lines from poetry are presented in Spanish. The serene scene of a swamp shifts to an overhead drone shot of the concert with Gahan executing mesmerizing calisthenics during the somber ballad "Speak to Me," his resonant voice cutting through a cloud of synthesizers. A lesson about the Aztec guardian of the underworld prefaces Gore's stunning rendition of "Soul with Me," another of Frías' thoughtful connections between song and spirit. How did Depeche Mode honor Andy Fletcher? Longtime fans of Depeche Mode will relish the vibrant performances of classics including "Enjoy the Silence" – Gahan grinning at Gore as he picks out the song's identifiable opening guitar notes – and a muscular "Personal Jesus." But they will likely most appreciate the dedication to original member Andy Fletcher, who died of an aortic dissection in 2022 at age 60. Dot-matrix printouts of Fletcher's face bob throughout the crowd as Gahan bends his fingers to form eyeglasses and holds his arms overhead in a mask-like pose. As the band performs "World in My Eyes," the video screens blanketing the back of the stage illuminate with Fletcher's photo, a sweet tribute to a New Wave innovator. While the theme of mortality is threaded throughout the film, it is also balanced with hope, appreciation and more than a dab of realism. As one fan asks rhetorically, "Thinking something will last forever isn't good, right?"

Many Chicagoans know Tom Bachtell for his two decades (until 2018) of iconic illustrations for the New Yorker magazine's "Talk of the Town" column. Today, the acclaimed artist creates his distinctive brush and ink illustrations for magazines, album covers and books while also finding time to dance and perform chamber music around town. What's up: We recently caught up with Bachtell as he accepted a posthumous Studs Terkel Award for his longtime partner and arts reporter Andrew Patner. We asked the Chicagoan of four decades to describe his ideal day in the city. ☕️ Breakfast: " Pastore's, a cheerful and bustling breakfast place in my Lincoln Square neighborhood. The owner is from Guanajuato in central Mexico. "I always order oatmeal and traditional café de olla, and just soak in the atmosphere." 🕺🏽 Morning Activity:"I like to burst out of the gate by Zoom swing dancing and improvising with my hooping, dancing friend Denise E Williams." "If there's time at the end of the afternoon, I'll head over to the Art Institute or go for a quick workout at LA Fitness." 🥡 Dinner: "It's an easy subway ride to Chinatown to grab a Cantonese seafood dinner at the Golden Bull, but not eat too much, because I plan to go swing dancing afterwards." 💃🏼 Evening Activity: "In my dream world, I head to the Green Mill every night to pretend I'm Fred Astaire, and dance every number during the Cellar Boys ' first set from 8 to 9pm."
