Malaysia and Poland strengthen trade and security cooperation
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Poland have agreed to strengthen their economic partnership by lowering trade barriers and boosting cooperation in key sectors such as agri-food.
Both countries also pledged to work more closely to combat organised crime, illegal immigration, and human trafficking.
In a joint statement following a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Polish President Andrzej Duda, both leaders said economic cooperation is an essential pillar of bilateral relations.
"Both sides agreed to promote balanced trade by reducing economic barriers, enhancing consultation mechanisms between relevant ministries, and fostering
collaboration amongst business communities.
"The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation and boosting bilateral trade in the agri-food sector," they added.
Duda arrived in Malaysia yesterday for a three-day official visit to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation.
In 2024, Poland ranked as Malaysia's 8th largest trading partner among European Union member states, with total bilateral trade rising by 19.5 per cent to RM5.7 billion compared to 2023.
Malaysia's primary exports to Poland include electrical and electronic products, rubber products and machinery, while key imports from Poland consist of machinery, equipment and parts, electrical and electronic products and transport equipment.
The leaders agreed to support for the swift advancement of the Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement (MEUFTA) negotiations and stressed the importance of concluding the agreement at the earliest opportunity.
They also pledged to advance bilateral cooperation through joint initiatives in economic and digital transformation, focusing on key sectors including the digitalisation of public services, green transition, particularly the hydrogen economy and renewable energy among others.
Anwar also welcomed Poland's swift ratification of the Framework Agreement on Partnership and Cooperation between Malaysia and the European Union (MEUPCA).
The leaders also reiterated their commitment to deepen cooperation in security and defence, building upon cooperation in areas of mutual benefits.
They reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the exchange of experiences and coordination in combating crime, including organised and international crime, illegal immigration, and human trafficking.
Anwar and Duda also recognised the vital role of the private sector and people-to-people connections in strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between Malaysia and Poland.
"As such, they affirmed their commitment to expanding people-to-people exchanges in areas such as education, science, vocational training, culture, national heritage preservation, and tourism," they said.
They also welcomed efforts and encouraged airlines of both countries, as well as tour operators, to enhance direct air connectivity and expand package tour offerings to promote tourism, facilitate cargo transport, and strengthen people-to-people exchanges between Malaysia and Poland.
Duda also extended his thanks to Anwar and invited him to visit Poland, expressing hope that the friendly and productive dialogue between both countries will continue.

Zuraida's RM10m bond case: Federal Court to hear PKR's appeal bid on June 24
PUTRAJAYA, June 11 — The Federal Court will hear on June 24 an application by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) to seek leave to appeal against a Court of Appeal's decision which reduced the bond payment to be made by the party's former vice-president, Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, in a breach of party bond case. PKR's lawyer, Navpreet Singh, when contacted, told Bernama that the hearing will proceed via online proceedings. 'A final case management was held before the Federal Court deputy registrar Husna Dzulkifly today, he said, adding that all parties have updated the court pertaining to compliance with pre-hearing directives relating to their submissions. The case revolves around a civil suit filed by former PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, on behalf of the party, claiming that Zuraida, who was then the Ampang Member of Parliament, had breached the bond she had signed. The terms of the bond, among others, required Zuraida to pay PKR RM10 million within seven days of winning an election on the PKR ticket, should she resign from the party, join another political party, or become an independent representative. In June 2023, the High Court ruled in favour of the party and ordered Zuraida to pay the RM10 million, with the court finding the bond to be valid and enforceable. However, in December last year, the Court of Appeal agreed with the High Court that there was a breach of bond but reduced the bond amount to RM100,000, citing that the RM10 million is not a reasonable amount of compensation. This prompted PKR to file a leave to appeal. In her defence, Zuraida contended that she was forced to sign the bond with the party to be able to stand for election as a candidate in the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018. The Federal Court will now decide whether PKR can proceed with its appeal against the Court of Appeal's decision. In civil cases, litigants must obtain leave before they can proceed with their appeals in the Federal Court. — Bernama

Bursa opens firmer amid heavyweight buying support

At 9.05am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) raked in 7.06 points to 1,524.01 from Tuesday's close of 1,516.95. The benchmark index opened at 1,520.86, higher by 3.91 points. Market breadth was positive with 156 advancers versus 74 decliners, while 220 counters were unchanged, 1,919 untraded and 11 suspended. Anwar granted temporary stay in civil lawsuit
PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has allowed an application by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to temporarily stay the hearing of a civil lawsuit filed by his former research assistant Muhammed Yusoff Rawther over allegations of sexual assault. In a unanimous decision, a three-judge panel chaired by Justice Supang Lian said the appellate court was empowered under Section 44 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 to make an ad interim order to preserve the integrity of the appellant's stay application pending the disposal of his appeal against the High Court's decision. The High Court had dismissed Anwar's application to refer eight legal questions to the Federal Court. 'Accordingly, we hereby make an ad interim order to stay all proceedings, including the full trial at the High Court,' Justice Supang said in an online proceeding here yesterday. The hearing of the main lawsuit by Muhammed Yusoff was initially fixed to begin next Monday. Other judges on the bench were Justices Faizah Jamaludin and Ahmad Fairuz Zainol Abidin. Earlier, the panel heard from Anwar's counsel, Alan Wong, that if the full trial proceeds, the effects would be 'irreversible'. 'The constitutional issues raised (in the application) would have been overtaken by events,' he said. Wong submitted that as the appellant was a sitting prime minister, he would be required to divert his attention and resources from the government's business to attend to the trial, causing disruption to his government function. 'To assist the court in appreciating the scale of this disruption, I have instructions to tender a copy of the Prime Minister's schedule during the trial period,' he said, requesting that the document be received under seal. Lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali, who represented Muhammed Yusoff, however, objected on the grounds that any introduction of material should have been done in an affidavit form. Muhammad Rafique also submitted that the trial dates, which should begin on June 16, were fixed a year ago on June 6, 2024, and this meant the appellant had 'very well known' he was due in court. 'The trial is supposed to commence next week. He (Anwar) had more than enough time to prepare for this trial, knowing fully well that everyone has to submit to the court system.' Muhammad Rafique also submitted that the court should consider whether the appeal has any chance or prospect of success. 'Simply put, the appeal is doomed to fail. 'There are no special circumstances (to warrant the stay),' he said, adding that the trial must proceed. On the application to insert the Prime Minister's schedule, the panel said it took judicial notice of the matter. 'We take judicial notice that the Prime Minister is busy and has a full schedule on any day. Therefore, there is no necessity to tender the schedule as proposed,' Justice Supang said. On June 4, High Court judge Justice Roz Mawar dismissed Anwar's application on the grounds that the eight questions failed to meet the threshold for referral under the Federal Constitution and the Courts of Judicature Act. The questions include whether a sitting prime minister enjoys limited immunity from lawsuits involving allegations of personal conduct that occurred before his appointment under Articles 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution. Anwar's application was in relation to a lawsuit filed by Muhammed Yusoff on July 14, 2021, claiming he was sexually assaulted in 2018. Anwar, in his defence, contended that the plaintiff had lied under oath to authorities regarding the alleged sexual assault. Anwar then filed a counterclaim on Sept 28, 2021, alleging that Muhammed Yusoff had fabricated it to tarnish his political career and prevent him from becoming prime minister. The hearing for a full stay application has been fixed for July 21.
