MRSM Kepala Batas renamed after Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
KEPALA BATAS: The Kepala Batas MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) has been renamed Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi MRSM in a ceremony held at the college today to honour Malaysia's fifth Prime Minister.
Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said that Abdullah was a national leader who had strongly supported MARA's efforts to expand the roles of its institutes, including MARA professional colleges, GIATMARA and MRSMs.
He added that naming the college after the former prime minister could never fully repay his contributions but it was a way to commemorate and honour him, especially in his former parliamentary constituency of Kepala Batas.
'After Abdullah's death, I reached out to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and suggested to rename Kepala Batas MRSM to recognise and honour Abdullah, especially on behalf of Kepala Batas residents,' he said during his speech at the ceremony.
He added that the Prime Minister agreed, stating that he had received similar suggestions from Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, officiated today's ceremony, in the presence of Abdullah's son Kamaludin and other family members, Rural and Regional Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Khair Razman Mohamed Annuar, Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid and Reezal Merican.
He also shared that the college was among the first to introduce the Ulul Albab programme, which was proposed by Abdullah himself, and that Abdullah's greatest legacy for MARA was the strengthening of a dual education system combining spiritual and worldly knowledge that formed the basis of the Ulul Albab programme.
'To this day, MARA has eight Ulul Albab MRSMs in the country thanks to Abdullah's brainchild,' he said, adding that the programme nurtured huffaz students who excel academically while cultivating their integrity and leadership skills rooted in Islamic values.
MARA also issued a statement explaining that the MRSM began operating on March 1, 2007 with the first intake of 359 students on April 16, 2007, and represented a milestone in expanding Bumiputera education access in the northern region of Malaysia.
The renaming of the college was a special tribute to a distinguished leader who had contributed immensely to religion, race and country, it added.

Fielding non-Muslims could help PAS woo non-Malays, says analyst

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Analysts have proposed two key strategies for PAS to win over non-Malay voters, namely fielding non-Muslim candidates in safe seats and highlighting the party's achievements in its administration of Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis – also known as the SG4 states. Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said PAS must move away from political rhetoric if it hoped to shift perceptions among non-Malay voters. Advertisement 'So far, PAS has yet to demonstrate that it is a better option than DAP or PKR, as there's little to be proud of in its administration of the SG4 states. 'PAS must tone down its extreme rhetoric and focus on showcasing its ability to govern by making the SG4 a better model than the states governed by Pakatan Harapan (PH) or Barisan Nasional. That's what it needs to do now,' he told FMT. PAS vice-president Amar Nik Abdullah previously said that the party was targeting non-Malay voters who were disillusioned with the government ahead of the 16th general election, acknowledging however PAS's struggle to win over that segment. He said PAS faced the challenge of finding more convincing ways to gain the trust of non-Malay voters while preserving its clean image and integrity to maintain its support among the youth. Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said dissatisfaction among non-Malays towards PH could give PAS an opening, but only if the Islamic party could address deeper, structural issues. 'These include concerns about religious freedom and racial harmony, and rejecting theocratic narratives. Without such changes, discontent with PH will only be temporary, as non-Malay voters still find it difficult to accept Perikatan Nasional (PN). 'PAS also needs to overcome the longstanding distrust, including the fact that it once branded non-Muslims as infidels (kafir) – something that still lingers in the memory of many non-Malays.' PAS must be sincere in fielding non-Muslim candidates Awang Azman added that dissatisfaction with PH did not automatically mean that the non-Malays were ready to support PAS. 'PAS must be bold and sincere in placing non-Muslim candidates in winnable seats – just as Umno does with MIC and MCA – as a genuine sign of cooperation with non-Muslims. This shouldn't just be rhetoric or a symbolic gesture,' he said. Rusdi Omar of Universiti Utara Malaysia said that to attract non-Malay support, PAS must move away from an overemphasis on religious, racial, and royal sentiments, and adopt a more moderate approach. Task force to assist non-Muslim groups
Ling says Johor government will address matters with a more systematic approach. A SPECIAL task force has been formed by Johor government to address matters affecting non-Islamic religious groups. Johor health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the task force, co-chaired by himself and state unity, heritage and culture committee chairman K. Raven Kumar, was approved during a state executive council meeting in late April. 'The task force will focus on resolving long-standing issues faced by non-Islamic religious groups, especially in relation to reserve land status, land ownership transfers and property tax. 'Instead of addressing such matters on a case-by-case basis, as was previously done, the state government is now taking a more systematic approach through the task force,' he said in an interview. Ling, who is also MCA Youth chief, said the task force was gathering all relevant data and documents before convening in mid-June to discuss and resolve the issues. He added that the state government was open and willing to listen to the people's voices. 'Recently, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi helped iron out technical issues for the proposed SJK(C) Kuek Ho Yao. 'The construction of the school was put on hold and delayed for years due to land-related matters. 'With support from the Mentri Besar, a piece of land has been specifically marked for the school and handed over to the Federal Lands Commissioner,' he said. Ling said Onn Hafiz was open to assisting in matters related to the Chinese and Indian communities, especially regarding education, culture and religion. He said in recent years, the state granted exemptions for property tax involving Chinese independent schools including Foon Yew High School's Seri Alam campus, which was announced in January. 'The paperwork for the tax exemption has been completed and will be brought to the state executive council meeting for approval soon. 'We are committed to finding fair and practical solutions to these issues so that development and harmony can continue to flourish in the state,' he said.
